She’d been away from the capital for a full week, having been inserted into the queen’s security detail for her visit to one of their neighbor kingdoms. The mission had been relatively easy, quiet, up until the last day, when they were ambushed on the way back to their borders. The attack had left their entire delegation dead, save her and Her Majesty, and she’d been so pissed and frustrated by the outcome that she’d gone straight to his room the moment she was dismissed from the palace.

No, they‘re not together. They’re far from anything like that. They’re orphans raised to become supersoldiers and superspies, subjected to a rigid training program that many children have died from. But they’re their generation’s best, and they’ve found a place at the top of their ranks — a spot they’ve been trying to push each other off from for years, because there can really only be one, but with limited success, since they’re so evenly matched. Most days it’s a source of entertainment for their seniors and peers, first watching and betting on them as they beat each other up in the training yard, then watching and betting on them as they try to outdo each other in missions.

She doesn’t even knock, simply prying his door open with a knife and entering like she owned the place, making a beeline for the wine she knows he’s got waiting on the nightstand. She’s never had to worry about walking in on him with someone before, because somehow, along the way, they’d developed this unspoken rule: they were each other’s.

That’s not to say she never wished they were each other’s in the way that mattered. But that wasn’t allowed. They had been sworn to the kingdom since they were children, and any other attachment was forbidden.
