haunted happenings

just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?

this meme is for serious or light-hearted forays into the unknown. were you at a planned seance trying to hear your long-dead aunt barbara speak to you? are you at a sleepover and some smartass decided to chant bloody mary in the bathroom mirror? maybe you thought the abandoned house in town looked like a cool place to take photos at midnight. no matter how serious or sarcastic your attempt, you've actually managed to trigger the supernatural.

rng for prompts, or choose based on your favorites! try to put which scenarios you're most interested in in your top levels.

the scene
1. a sleepover. your house or theirs, this is a decidedly normal and un-spooky place most of the time.
2. an abandoned house. this one's at least up-front about it, even if you don't believe in ghosts. doesn't have to be a house - maybe it's overgrown train tracks or an old asylum. whatever it is, it's crumbling and quite frankly a little depressing.
3. a cemetery. the most obvious place of all, and yet the ghosts probably didn't spend much time there while they were alive. were you here to grieve? to prove you're not afraid to wander around at midnight? taking a shortcut home?
4. a carnival. is their psychic pulling up real ghosts from your past? are you seeing a terrible future in their crystal ball? maybe that tarot reading is starting to come true in horrifying ways. or maybe you just found a ghost eating popcorn behind the water pistol game.
5. at work. they say it's a killer job, but you'd really thought it was just a phrase.
6. any and all others.

the trigger
1. ouija board. specifically made for contacting spirits, you were probably at least aware that this was happening. but did you expect it to start spelling out threats? or is it just asking you to change the pandora station because it's sick of your weird acid punk music?
2. bloody mary. did a friend go into the bathroom and then come out screaming that it actually worked this time? did you try it out and end up face-to-face with a very drunk ghost? why does that drink even have clam juice in it? maybe now you can ask.
3. recordings. is there a vampire in the background of your latest snap? or maybe your serious attempt at recording an EVP was successful.
4. ghosts, man. you turned a corner at that abandoned subway station and now you're staring at a worker from the 1800s. your closet houses a long-dead Baltic immigrant who won't stop trying to sing you lullabies at night. whether friendly or aggressive, it's a little creepy to talk to a ghost.
5. mystical artifact. those surprisingly cheap boots you got from a garage sale were apparently not vegan leather, because now you've activated a mummy's curse. a book you got from the library turns out to be a witch's favorite grimoire. whatever the situation, you've managed to find the exact wrong thing to get your hands on.
6. surely there's more. bring in your favorite spooky trope or old haunting legend. there's room for it all ~~in hell~~.

(Open to all! Canon or Cross canon interactions welcome, and can be modern AU’d if that’s a preference. Or possibly have him haunting an old house after a failed investigation back in 1905. Or have him investigating a place that’s haunted. Honestly all the options are up for grabs, I’m very flexible and I love all the prompts!)

[One vampire surgeon here to say that surely this is a terrible idea and he has a bad feeling about the old hospital and the cemetary behind it. Hell, he recognizes some of the names on those tombstones. He indirectly put some of them in the ground. Is it ghosts? Did you inadvertently discover he's a vampire? Another scenario? You decide! Open to modern AU, of course.]

[The Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century can handle any supernatural occurrence! Reigen handles ghosts and hauntings as his business so it's incredibly easy to drag him along for anything of that nature. I'm down for any scenario!]

[ Who wants a dead FBI agent to talk about their problems to? Who wants to avenge her death? Who wants to gloat about it? ]

[ The house has been empty for almost a decade, or at least, devoid of any living inhabitants. Esther's watched as people have tried to sell it, as teenagers broke in to cause trouble away from prying eyes, and each and every time, she's managed to send them running out the way they came. This is the house she was born in and, almost precisely sixteen years later, it was the house she died in.

Not long after that, it also became the house her father died in, too; an untimely event and cloaked in just enough mystery to warrant the home gaining just a little infamy. The house staff left, and just like that, Esther was very much by herself. She sort of liked it, as disconcerting as being dead could be at times. The peace and quiet was nice though.

A state that's quite rudely interrupted one night when she hears the sound of a door hurriedly being forced open, though it wasn't just the banging and cursing that got her attention. There were men shouting; something that only got louder once the door was open and they had gotten into the house itself. By the time she'd reached the stairwell leading to the ground floor, she was met with the sight of one man backing urgently down the hallway, alternating between trying to barter with his assailants and cursing them, clearly realising he was running out of options.

Although she knew they couldn't see her, Esther froze on the spot, hand gripping the banister and only moving again when they'd taken their business through to the drawing room.

Soon after, a violent fight broke out, and she could do very little to stop it. She could only watch, slipping through the door and watching as the larger men ganged up on the first. One shrugged his coat off and threw it aside - presumably to keep from getting blood on it or tearing it, though in her experience it was because they tended to be restrictive when one wished to beat another black and blue. Whatever this man's reason was, Esther saw the mistake in it, and it was that that she concerned herself with while things a few feet away turned ugly.

Furniture was shoved out of the way, things were broken and the room rapidly began to resemble a bombsite before the second assailant decided to put a stop to things with the handgun he'd kept concealed in his own jacket up until then. He shot the victim twice before his acquaintance swore and pulled him away. There was cursing and hushed argument before they decided to flee the scene, still blissfully unaware of the young ghostly homeowner, cringed back from where the discarded coat had been snatched up, intact but missing something from one of it's pockets; a business card of some sort, it seemed like.

It would only be a matter of time until the police arrived - there had been people walking on the street outside the front of the house when the shots were fired. That meant more people snooping around. She didn't need to hold her breath anymore and she couldn't feel her heart pounding as it would have done had she been alive to witness this, but she still approached the blood-framed corpse with inherent wariness.

This was going to be an interesting night. ]
