just couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?



this meme is for serious or light-hearted forays into the unknown. were you at a planned seance trying to hear your long-dead aunt barbara speak to you? are you at a sleepover and some smartass decided to chant bloody mary in the bathroom mirror? maybe you thought the abandoned house in town looked like a cool place to take photos at midnight. no matter how serious or sarcastic your attempt, you've actually managed to trigger the supernatural.

rng for prompts, or choose based on your favorites! try to put which scenarios you're most interested in in your top levels.

the scene
1. a sleepover. your house or theirs, this is a decidedly normal and un-spooky place most of the time.
2. an abandoned house. this one's at least up-front about it, even if you don't believe in ghosts. doesn't have to be a house - maybe it's overgrown train tracks or an old asylum. whatever it is, it's crumbling and quite frankly a little depressing.
3. a cemetery. the most obvious place of all, and yet the ghosts probably didn't spend much time there while they were alive. were you here to grieve? to prove you're not afraid to wander around at midnight? taking a shortcut home?
4. a carnival. is their psychic pulling up real ghosts from your past? are you seeing a terrible future in their crystal ball? maybe that tarot reading is starting to come true in horrifying ways. or maybe you just found a ghost eating popcorn behind the water pistol game.
5. at work. they say it's a killer job, but you'd really thought it was just a phrase.
6. any and all others.


the trigger
1. ouija board. specifically made for contacting spirits, you were probably at least aware that this was happening. but did you expect it to start spelling out threats? or is it just asking you to change the pandora station because it's sick of your weird acid punk music?
2. bloody mary. did a friend go into the bathroom and then come out screaming that it actually worked this time? did you try it out and end up face-to-face with a very drunk ghost? why does that drink even have clam juice in it? maybe now you can ask.
3. recordings. is there a vampire in the background of your latest snap? or maybe your serious attempt at recording an evp was successful.
4. ghosts, man. you turned a corner at that abandoned subway station and now you're staring at a worker from the 1800s. your closet houses a long-dead baltic immigrant who won't stop trying to sing you lullabies at night. whether friendly or aggressive, it's a little creepy to talk to a ghost.
5. mystical artifact. those surprisingly cheap boots you got from a garage sale were apparently not vegan leather, because now you've activated a mummy's curse. a book you got from the library turns out to be a witch's favorite grimoire. whatever the situation, you've managed to find the exact wrong thing to get your hands on.
6. surely there's more. bring in your favorite spooky trope or old haunting legend. there's room for it all in hell.

The older Winchester boy appears in the middle of a street in the dead of night with a flutter of... wings? Or the sound of them, anyway, but no wings could be seen. Dean spins around with flailing limbs, disoriented and confused.

"Cas?" No response. "Cas!" Still nothing. "Friggen' angels, man!" He huffs and flattens out his jacket, trying to unruffle his proverbial feathers. "There's a case he says. Omens he says. You could be a little more vague next time, Cas! What the hell, man?! Drop me in the middle of--" he spins around again and looks for any identifying markers. A sign catches his eye, as well as a very familiar wheel in the distance. "ENGLAND?! Really?! I don't even have my freaking passport! How the hell am I supposed to get..." The brunette catches movement in the corner of his eye and his breath freezes in the air. "...home?"

Just down the block, Dean noticed ghosts lining the street outside a house. A couple dozen, but he didn't really feel like counting each head. They were all staring at a specific house. "The hell?" He carefully wove through the stock still spectres, making his way to the door. Now he's starting to wonder if Cas ditched him or was somehow ejected from the area. Whatever was going on here, it was heavy. So, he clears his throat and knocks on the door...

carnival and ghosts -- and since Lydia has a camera...

Bursts of light can be seen popping in and out of view all over the decrepit carnival; it's only still dusk, and the summer evening means the western horizon will continue to glow modestly for the next few hours, but it's just enough for Lydia's Fujifilm instant camera to produce some eerie snapshots of the place.

Rusting rides, paint peeling off of game booths were children used to win stuffed animals and bags of goldfish, wooden shacks bending and splintering from various forms of rot... And the best part? When Lydia stops to listen, she can hear the soft whines and creaks from the mechanic swings and ferris wheel, seats swaying in the high breezes that barely sweep the tops of the trees.

It takes her breath away.

Flash, whirrrr, click. She plucks the photo off the top of her Instax Wide and looks back up at the wall where a few stuffed animals were abandoned on the wall of a ring-toss gallery. Bloated with old rain water, the pastel-colored bears' fur is all matted and frayed by wind and dust.

"Peter?" She calls, looking around for the silver-haired boy. "Are you still keeping watch?" Her heart's racing, and not just from excitement; the 'No Trespassing' signs were very clear about involving the police should their property be infiltrated, and her dad would ground her into next year if she was ever caught doing something like this.

Well, it helps to have a friend who can run at a fraction of light speed, which was the only thing to convince her to break the law for the first time in her short life...

[This ambiguous sweatered kid is terrified.

Not particularly because of the old, creaky mansion they're in, and the way none of the doors seem to lead outside or the windows to open, or the creeping sensation they're being watched and there's something in here with them, and the way either some of the rooms are either identical down to the dust patterns or they keep entering the same one.

(although these are indeed very important in contributing to the internal screaming)

But that, whenever they look out of the windows, they can see stars. How did they get here!?

It's for this reason that when a small, on the edge-of-hyperventilating child clutching a wooden stake to their chest like it's their only lifeline brushes against something that moves, they let out a noise like a dying teakettle and jump quite an impressive distance away.]
