yohko: (Hopeless romantic)

A Moment in Time meme.

There are moments in time when a particular event brings everything and everyone together in sharp focus. Other times, these events are just important to the person (or persons) involved. No matter – it’s history. If you’ve ever wanted to experience or relive these moments through your character, now’s your chance.

There are no tricks, no time-machines, no smoke and mirrors. Simply put: this is a “simple” slice of life meme, where the time and place are significant and provided to you, if you are interested. What your character does and who they do it with is entirely up to you (or to RNG, if you so desire).

How it works:
→ Leave a comment with the usual information in the subject line: character name, fandom. Any preferences, including what you don't want, should be stated as well.
→ Tag around. Feel free to use RNG. Roll it twice: 1-6 for the decade, then 1-3 for the event/scenario. Or just pick whichever one you want. There's also a Random section for stuff that couldn't fit anywhere else.
→ Have fun, and be excellent to each other.

1940s
1. Sometime 1942. At the movies, watching Casablanca.

2. June 6th, 1944. 6:30 am GMT. Omaha Beach. Normandy, France. Also known as D-Day, the day over 150,000 Allied soldiers crossed the English Channel into France in one of the largest amphibious assaults in military history.
3. Post September 2, 1945. Returning home from WWII. Whether you were a soldier, a nurse, a reporter or yeoman.Whether you were in Europe or in Pacific Theater. Everyone contributed to the war effort in their own way. Now that it's over, it's time to return home.

1950s
1. Mid 1950s. New York City. Beat Poetry Scene, where it all started. Before Howl, Naked Lunch, and On the Road. Before acid everyone headed to San Francisco.
2. Anytime 1950s. Post-war suburb, like Levittown, New York. A perfect family dinner. At least, it seems perfect. . .
3. Anytime 1950s. Local high/secondary school. Put on your favorite poodle-dog dress, get out a Chuck Berry record, grease up your hair, and make room for the malts: it's time for a Sock Hop!

1960s
1. Early-to-Mid 1960s. Madison Avenue, New York City. The capital of advertisement. Popularized by AMC's Mad Men. So, are you hard at work or hardly working?
2. Mid-to-Late 1960s. Anywhere, really. Protest March. Civil rights, Anti-Vietnam War, Second wave Feminism, Gay rights, Student rights, Environmentalism—they all made sure their voices were heard in the Sixties.
3. July 20, 1969. The Moon Landing. Over 500 million people around the world tuned in to watch Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's Apollo 11 manned landing. Where are you?

1970s
1. Anytime, 1970s. Anywhere, really. Key party! Put your house or car keys in the bowl as you enter. Someone else draws them at the end of the party. The both of you go home, or somewhere, together and have sex. At least, that's the gimmick. Things have a tendency to get awkward or creative. It is the Seventies, after all.
2. Anytime, 1970s. San Francisco Police Department. Dirty Harry, Starsky & Hutch, Bullitt (back in 1968), and the eponymous Streets of San Francisco . . . They all took place in the City by the Bay. Cops and bad guys—work with it. And don't forget the epic car chase and the sweet rides!
3. Post 1977. New York City, in line for Studio 54. It's the most famous nightclub of all time. Everyone that's anyone comes here. Mick and Bianca Jagger, Michael Jackson, Liza Minnelli, Jack Nicholson, little Tatum O'Neal—that is, everyone that can get through the club's notoriously strict entry policy. Maybe it's your lucky night.

1980s
1. Early-to-Mid 1980s. London. New Wave club. Mellow, androgynous, haunting, yet surprisingly catchy and poppy. Sure, Joy Division—I mean, New Order might not be playing at the venue tonight, but the DJ has a ton of synthesizer-heavy things to play . . .
2. July, 1986. Heavy Metal Concert Parking Lot. It's a subculture within a subculture. All you need are some friends, some pot or beer, and a Camaro. They even made a documentary about it. It needs to be seen to be believed.
3. June 23, 1989. So much shit happened (or will happen) this year: the Berlin Wall will come down, the Exxon Valdez spilled, the Hillsborough disaster took the lives of nearly 100 football supporters, Emperor Hirohito of Japan died, and Ted Bundy is gonna get fried. But who cares about that? We're going to see Tim Burton's Batman, mother fucker!

1990s
1. Sometime in 1998. AOL. Town Square: Meet & Greet. What is this chat? What does "LOL" mean? And what's that damn chime? Oh, it's an instant message from someone you think is not who they say they are. Let's get to know them. Just don't pick up the phone, otherwise you'll get punted!
2. Late 90s. Hype Williams video shoot. You might not know who he is, but if you've tuned into MTV at least once, you can recognize his trademark—fish eye lenses—from a mile away. And now you're here, working on one of his videos. Are you a video vixen? The star? Or, gulp, a PA?
3. December 31, 1999, Times Square, New York City. 11:58 pm. Dawning of the new millenium. What's going to happen when the clock strikes twelve and the ball comes down?

Random.
1. Sometime in the 15th century. Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, England. The famous outlaw Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men make this their home, much to the dismay of the Sheriff . . .
2. Sometime in 1604. Edo, Japan. The Sengoku-era. Kabuki, created by the highly-talented miko Izumo no Okuni, is immensely popular. Women are allowed to perform. How about we forget all this land-conquering and go see (or perform in) a show?
3. After January 17, 1920. Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Eighteenth Amendment has passed, which established Prohibition. Which means: no alcohol. Unless, of course, you're a bootlegger or you just happen to stumble into a speakeasy . . .
4. Sometime in the distant future. Aboard the starship Enterprise. Space. The Final Frontier. Will you boldly go where no man has gone before?
5. Very random. Pick anything you want and just go for it!

It's been a long time since the war. The entire affair wasn't even declassified until years after Carter got home from Germany, and now the most interesting years of Carter's life are a few interesting historical anecdotes and that book Kinchloe wrote ten years ago. WWII is over half a century away, and good riddance to it, but Carter's glad he was there to do his part.

And now it's nearly 2000. Wow. Carter leans on his cane, grinning up at the lights of Times Square as the crowd around him waits for the clock to roll over. He never did lose that childlike sense of wonder at the world's existence. "Sure is shiny, ain't it?"

Welcome to UCLA, where the grades are made up and the points don't matter! It was a bright day in 1970; a year where moon-rockets were exploding, The Beatles were splitsville, bras were burning, Woodstock was classed as the first human natural disaster, and Damon Gant was on his own collision course with similar disastrous consequences.

Powell Library, with its lofty Renaissance Printers' Mark ceilings, and Romanesque architecture, was where all the future great minds went to fill their heads with the vital structural information their professors were conveniently paid not to teach. In these sacred halls only the most philosophical of discussions took place, as could be plainly heard by one of the most well-known and ostentatious of patrons:

"So then I told the man, I told him, 'Doc, I'm a bit of a treblemaker, you see.' So in that very moment he boxed my ears! Hohohoh!"

A pretty young thing stood coyly in front of a much taller student, who looked as if he should be out on the football field, rather than the library. While she looked as if she were doing her best not to laugh at his cringe-worthy attempts to humor her.

"Damey, if all you've got is organ jokes, I'm going to have to pass." Oh those coquettish uni-girls, always playing the hard to get!

"Oh come now, Wendsy, if you stick around till this eve, I swear I wont pull any stops." His answer was a folder to the face and before he could catch her by the tail, she was off like a bag in the wind. But that hardly meant he had come out unlucky, as cleaning up the mess of papers strewn towards the study-tables would reward him with a sticky-note and a number penned in red ink.

"Clever girl." He chided with a cocksure grin as he crouched at one of the more secluded tables. Folding the little note delicately into the breast-pocket of his tan blazer, he was about to skip off back to Student Counsel to get a bit more info on who his next challenge would be... he was the official greeter of fresh-meat after all.

But as he lifted his heels to stand, his crown came up and knocked the tremendous oak table with such a force that the towers of books that resembled the Walls of Jerico came crashing down on top of him... unwittingly unveiling the steely-eyed Prince of Perfection that lurked inside.

"Oh that smarts!"
