It's Spooky Season, Time For Spooky Season Memes

Monsters. They terrify, hunt, and haunt our nightmares. From the monsters of the soul to the monsters that can be killed, Halloween is all about embracing your inner monster be they creepy, kooky, mysterious, or spooky. Roll for monster class (or just play what you want). Tell people what you're doing in a comment. Then pick from a selection of prompts to get DW RP into that fabulous spooky season.

THIS MEME CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL AND THEMES READ WITH CAUTION.

1) Human Monsters: Killers, tortured souls. These are the people who have lost their way or been forced to turn into something terrifying. Werecreatures, Vampires. These are the monsters that still retain enough humanity to remind their loved ones and their fellow former humans of just how far they've fallen - if they didn't just decide to embrace their inner darkness. (Examples include werewolves, vampires, zombies, killers, possessed humans.)

2) Never really human to begin with: For good or ill, you've encountered a selkie, a merperson, some unknown creature that was never human to begin with. Or you're turning into one and it's time to learn to walk on the wild side. Either way, enjoy dragging men to the depths, stealing personal possessions, all that good stuff. (Examples include Fairies, Selkies, Merpeople, loc ness monsters, plant creatures, insert folk lore monster here.)

3) On a totally other than human level: Demons, Angels, possessed creatures, ghosts. You've transcended the mortal coil - or you were never on it to begin with. Aliens buzz the earth, Ghosts haunt the living for good (or for ill), Demons drag souls to the depths, and Angels aren't nearly as nice as they look. While werewolves and vampires roam and monster-monsters live their lives - you're on a totally different level. (examples include demons, ghosts, aliens, angels, spirits, poltergeists, all that good stuff.)

4) Monster Hunter: You can't have monsters without monster hunters, but that's the point. This isn't a picnic. Just ask a Winchester how bad it is that your loved one has turned into something from beyond the grave. This isn't a walk in the park. Kill or be Killed, Eat or become something else entirely. You're about to embark on the fight of your life. After all, someone would argue you're a monster too.

1.) Hey there little red riding hood Introductions. Either you're a monster, you're hunting a monster, or you're just out living your life you've run across something unexpected and now you've got to decide if you'll fight or flee. Be warned, whoever you've encountered might not let you go so easily...

2.) I'm going hunting Hunting can look like a lot of things for monsters. Either you're dragging men to their depths, sniffing your way through the woods, or driving along a dirt road because you heard reports of something not right out by the old farm house, this is you hunting. Do you have a team? Are you going it alone?

3.) Baby did a bad bad thing Either you're new to this monster lifestyle or you've just done what nature intended but you just did something terrible and you need someone to come and clean up the mess - or someone's caught you in the act. Is it totally mundane? Is it something out of a kubrick film? Are your friends/loved ones/the police cool with it?

4.) Let's make a deal It's come to this. An impasse. You've been summoned (or done the summoning) and you have a chance to make a deal. Or - you've managed to calm the creature that's about to rip your throat out. Make your deal, convince your attacker why you should live. Does it go good? Bad? all depends how quickly you can talk about it...if you're not just planning on killing them outright...

5.) The enemy of my enemy: Team up time! Much like Godzilla teaming up with humanity, much like every good vampire teaming up with the protagonists, it's time for you to team up against a bigger threat. either it's a master something or the world is ending but this is the team up post. Hash out the details, get the guns, it's time for the 3rd act fight fest.

6.) Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal! Team up? More like - screw up. You've trusted the wrong creature, you're turning against humans/Your Fellow Monsters. you've decided to give into those feral instincts that well inside you. Fingers crossed your party doesn't light you on fire. Good luck to both parties involved.

7.) The day is saved The team up worked, the monster is defeated, or the monster has accepted their monster-fate and will now live as something better (or worse) then human. Celebrate - or accept that the nightmare is never really over. Do you continue the fight?

8) The Normal Monster Prompt: Monsters. They're just like us! They shop, they try and function. This is the Addams family prompt. Weird shit follows them but truthfully if monsters are an allegory for people accepting themselves and people who are different naturally this is the point where you're a monster just trying to do your thing. Hunters trying to stab you while you go to work? sailors hitting you with oars? Just another day.

[ The problem with a system as complex as the Rayshift is that if the smallest thing goes wrong -- a single decimal point in the numbers, a slight tilt to the angles -- that it all ripples outward and grows as it goes. No one on the other end means to have Ritsuka arrive alone, unsure of where the rest of her party is. No one means to have communications cut out after a couple seconds of confused discussion. And certainly no one expected that there'd be Actual Hostile Creatures in the area.

But the situation is what it is, and Ritsuka has spent the better part of an hour sneaking through this strange dark forest from something large and hairy and smells like a nauseating combination of rot and wet dog. She's seen glimpses of it through the trees, and it's bigger than her by a long shot, its arms unnaturally long, bone showing through the matted clumps of fur. The only saving grace she has is that its sense of smell doesn't seem to be as keen as a normal canine might have, but its huge, batlike ears swivel constantly this way and that. She's frankly a little afraid just to breathe.

And so, of course, that's not the thing that does her in. As careful as she's been, she finally slips up-- almost literally. Her foot comes down on a twig, which snaps so loudly it sounds like a gunshot. An instant later, she hears a series of rough snorts as the creature finally pinpoints her location. For a couple of seconds (too long) she stands there, and then she gives up on even trying to be careful. She just turns and she runs. She'll worry about part two of her plan in a moment; part one is to just try and put some more distance between her and the beast in the woods.

What she eventually settles on is finding a tree to climb. The thing is closer than she'd like, but surely if she goes up, it won't be able to follow her, right? She can't worry about if it's about to make a grab for her; she's just focused on scrambling up, out of the way, never mind the gnarled hand reaching for her ankle... ]

[It seemed that the third time was a charm.

Twice before he’d almost been murdered, and twice Murdoch had shown up at the last moment to foil the attempt. The third time, It had just been Detective Llewelyn Watts and the person that he’d thought was an informant. Standing in an old, run down building in that should have been torn down years ago. They hadn’t been who they’d said they were, of course, instead they’d been one of the very people he was out to apprehend that had enough of his digging around in their business. Unfortunately the clues just hadn’t lined up yet, and Watts had been working mostly alone so far despite a promise not to after an altercation a few months prior on his way home.

The problem was that the detective could be difficult to work with, and not everyone had the patience for his methods. It was only an information exchange with someone he’d spoken to about the case several times before, and he had no reason to consider that it would be anything else. A clever trap for a well-meaning detective just looking to get to the bottom of the continued disappearances of woman and youth in their city. He had hardly even had the chance to see the bullet coming.

Several days later, someone had finally figured out the truth behind his absence and located the warehouse. There was a rush of activity, a call for a medic once they’d found him, followed by a hollow ‘never mind, he’s gone.’]

Who’s gone?

[Time continued to flow. Llewelyn never had the greatest sense for it, and so he couldn’t really say how much had passed.

Talk of the event floated around the station from one person or another, discussions leading to dead-ends and more questions than they’d started with. Everyone knew he’d been a bit scattered in his investigation techniques. He found order in what seemed to everyone else like a mess of over complicated chaos or answers on a blank chalkboard. But why had he gone off on his own on an investigation that was clearly going to garner the notice of the likely dangerous individuals involved? Why hadn’t he waited for George or Murdoch to be available to go with him, or taken anyone at all in their place as backup?

The atmosphere around the station had shifted. No one would look at him, or speak for that matter. No one had even batted an eye when he sat on someone’s desk while trying to engage them in conversation. Llewelyn knew that he’d occasionally ruffled feathers, but this was just rude and seemingly unwarranted. No one at Station House 4 had ever outright ignored him while he was talking to them directly before, they would at least tell him they were busy and move on.

Then it started to get annoying, and his nerves were set on edge as they moved on from ignoring him to clearly talking about him as though he weren’t even there.

At first, he hadn’t even realized they were doing it. Comments or questions like ‘Surely there’s someone we should contact. What about his sister?’ Went over his head for the most part. It slowly dawned on him that they were talking about him when someone commented that ‘Even if we could find her again, it might not mean anything now. She hadn’t even wanted to stay in touch as far as anyone could tell.’

Then someone had a thought, ‘Wasn’t there someone he had been talking about recently...? The girl with the... uh... the dog? Ate his hat. Actually, he wasn’t wearing his new one when we found him and I don’t think I’ve seen it around the station.’]

I... don’t understand. Why are you ignoring me? If this is an attempt at a prank, then I have to say that it is in very poor taste. It’s like you’re all pretending I’m dead? I fail to see what amusement could be found in that, I thought you were all better than that! And don’t drag Esther into this ridiculous charade, I won’t have it!

[Lights flickered, a computer lost power, and that phantom pain in his chest returned.

The next thing he knew, he was in Inspector Brackenreid’s office while a familiar face was sat across the desk from the usually gruff man. Instead, his voice was quiet, almost as though he was breaking some kind of news to her in the gentle tone he’d usually reserved for dealing with delicate matters.

Esther had shown up, with his hat of all things, looking for him after her messages had gone unanswered for several days. George and Henry had floundered a bit, and Murdoch had quickly intervened to usher her into the large office where Brackenreid worked to discuss things. It was around the point where the Inspector had begun to explain what had happened that Llewelyn finally realized (accepted) what was going on.]

“I’m sorry to have to tell you this, Miss Moreau, but Detective Watts was killed two nights ago. He was working a case and it... well it seems he ran into some trouble. I can assure you that we’re doing everything we can to get to the bottom of it and-”

[Llewelyn didn’t hear much more than that, too stunned as he realized why everyone had been ignoring or talking about him as they had been. It wasn’t a joke, he was just dead.

He could faintly remember it now, his mind ticking off the facts like he would have when working on a case. ‘The victim sustained a single gunshot to the chest, it’s placement suggests that he would have bled out and died of the wound shortly after. He was found two nights later at the scene. No evidence of a struggle was found, so he likely knew and trusted his killer to some small degree (He had, and he felt the fool for it now).’

It was a hard truth, one he realized he’d denied for days. But the truth was one of the unyielding, constant forces in their world, and there was little to do now but accept it.

He came out of his little reverie just in time to see Esther leaving, with his hat in tow. Awkwardly he looked around the station house, then at her disappearing form. It wasn’t like he could do anything here, and while they were his friends they also were dealing with things well enough.

A small, nagging part of him reminded Llewelyn that he had told Esther he wouldn’t work this case alone after she’d had to patch him up early on in their friendship. He hadn’t lied to her, not really, but he hadn’t taken someone with him the one time it really mattered and now she’d walked into his place of work only to find out he was dead. Well, needless to say he was compelled to follow her. At least to make sure she’d be alright, for all the good he could do about it now.

So with a little grimace, he trailed along behind her with a pit forming in his non-existent gut.]
