what the water gave me

selkie au

Selkies: Sea dwelling creatures that take the form of a seal in the water, but can shed their fur and become human on land. A selkie on land must protect its pelt at all cost, as losing it means they will be unable to turn back into seal and return to the sea.

Most stories involve a selkie being tricked by a human to being trapped on land; their pelts stolen from them and hidden away. If they're lucky, sometimes they can find their skin and go home again. Other stories tell tales of selkies wooing dissatisfied humans into leaving their spouses. But the stories that can be told about selkies are as numerous as the sea is deep-- and now's your chance to take part in telling them.

how to play:
-top level with your character and your preferences for if they're a selkie or a human. provide as much detail as you like!
-reply to others
-have fun!

prompts:
1) trapped: the selkie is trapped on land. are they searching for their skin, still, or have they surrendered themselves to never being in the water again?
2) given: the selkie has given up their skin or their heart for love or some other, greater cause. is it worth it?
3) free: the selkie in the sea. perhaps they've just returned after being trapped or gone. perhaps they're just living out their lives in the water. what is it like, to be so wild?
4) calling: the selkie has spied a human they'd like to woo. will they succeed, and will it help or harm?
5) wildcard: come up with your own prompt!

[ Pietro as a selkie ; maybe Hydra has his pelt, and when the Avengers come for Loki’s staff they also take that? ]

[Sure! Thor would probably recognize it for what it is and try to figure out who it belonged to. Unless he already knows about Pietro and nabs it on purpose to give back.]

[Im think Pietro is way too distrustful of humans at this point to even consider just directly approaching them. So maybe he’s trying to sneak into the Tower, or this is why he’s working with ultron?]

[Maybe? I mean, it's not like Thor would keep it from him once he knew it was Pietro's. He's not that kind of guy.]

[ very true, Thor is too good for that. Pietro just wouldn’t have much of a good opinion of anyone at that point - so going directly to Thor and being like “hey give me my pelt” isn’t an option that he would see?]

[Oh no, I gotcha, I'm just saying like, Thor wouldn't fight him on it. That's if Thor even has it in his own possession vs. in SHIELD/Avengers storage somewhere pending finding the owner.]

[let me know if this doesn’t work, or if I should change anything. And holy cow this got a lot longer than I planned it to be, I don’t expect this length in return ]

The Avengers has come, and attacked Hydra, and in all of the confusion, the Maximoffs has escaped. Wanda has broken into the lab where the scientists had been working, and found her own pelt, but not Pietro’s. It was somewhere else, but she didn’t have time to search for it before they had to flee. She didn’t want to leave him, but Pietro convinced her that it would be best for her to get home. He would find out what had happened to his pelt, and then go home as well.
Returning to the Hydra castle has allowed him to access the security feeds, and the video from one of the storage areas when the hammer one, Thor wasn’t it, opened up the locked trunk and carefully removed Pietro’s pelt. In the grainy security feed, it was hard to tell, but he almost seemed to hold it tenderly, certainly far more careful with it than any of the Hydra men had ever been.
Managing to get to America, and to Stark Tower, was tricky. And yet he somehow got there in time to see several robots attacking the windows, and Stark Industries people fleeing the building, and in the chaos, he slips inside. Climbs the stairs. Hears the robot voice challenging the Avengers. He spares a thought for how outmatches they seem to be, but the fight is his chance to try to look around, to find what was taken.

[Nah, is good. Been a while since I've seen AoU, so kind of winging this]

One of the reasons that the Valkyrie had been formidable opponents was that they were just as deadly on foot as they were in the air, and likewise in the water, though most didn't know as much. The only reason Thor did was because he'd wanted to be one when he was younger, and they'd humored him, for a while, but he knew about the sealskins.

Which was why when he found one quite by accident amid the manifests of a Hydra site, he made sure to collect it along with the scepter that they were actually there for. It was possible of course that it belonged to a Midgardian, but if not, he needed to take it home to be properly memorialized, and if it did belong to a Midgardian, it was definitely better off in SHIELD's hands than Hydra's. Not that it was yet in SHIELD's hands, as Thor hadn't yet had a chance to find out its origins, he'd been planning to do so after the party, but then all hell had broken loose. At that moment it was in his quarters, folded neatly and tucked into his cape for safekeeping in a dresser drawer.

Though, in the chaos of an ever-increasing firefight no one -least of all Thor who was in the thick of things- was going to notice another body, especially one moving as quickly as Pietro was able.

[personal profile] fastasssilver 2019-10-01 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He could move quickly, and the chaos added a layer of protection to his usually silent movements. But there were downsides, having to pause often to avoid the robots, stand still while the building shock or some bit of ceiling threatened to fall down, and most of all, not know where Thor may have taken the skin. To the labs? To his personal quarters? Up in the lounge, as a form of shared trophy? Pietro worked his way through the labs, and then up to the next section of floors, through personal quarters that hardly seemed lived in, and then ones that clearly belonged to members of the team. Captain America had surprisingly few American flags in his rooms.
The battle sounds have faded. Pietro’s heart speeds up. He needs to find what he came for, and get out of here. He pushes open the door to the last of the rooms, the one he’s certain must belong to thor because it’s the only one he didn’t already search. If it wasn’t in here, he’d have to- go upstairs, to the living room and team space and hope that the robots had won so that none of the Avengers were there to question what he was searching for.
“Where is it? Where is it?” He throws open cupboards, tosses the blankets off the couch, growing more worried, more desperate as he turns towards the dresser.

With the immediate danger passed and the injured being seen to, those who were neither injured nor medical professionals started a sweep of the rest of the building, moving outward from the lounge turned makeshift medical bay just to make sure there were no stragglers among the felled robots.

His brow creased a little at finding all the doors to personal quarters standing open, shifting his grasp on the hammer in his hand, moving down the hall surprisingly quietly for a man of his size, glancing into each room as he passed to confirm that there were no surprises waiting to pounce.

It was the noise from his own quarters -intended as permanent but only ever temporary- that caught his attention, brow creasing as he stepped forward, pushing the door open the rest of the way, just filling the doorway, "Can I help you?" It wasn't quite a threat, but there was definitely a warning in the tone, not entirely sure what was going on here.

[personal profile] fastasssilver 2019-10-02 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Pietro spins around, pulling a short knife from his belt, as quick to fall into a fighting stance as he’d been moving through the rooms. He knows from his explorations elsewhere that there’s no other exit from the rooms, unless he feels like jumping out of the window. He hold the knife across his body, the sharp metal gleaming in the light from the hallway.
“I don’t need your help.” Anger makes his face pinch up, his mouth a snarl, his accent think. No explicit threat, but in a room with someone who took his skin and is now between him and the door is very much at threat at the moment. He’s just about done with these landwalkers, and he doesn’t much care that’s Thor is apparently alien rather than human, because he still took Pietro’s skin. Stolen from thieves is still stolen.
“Where is it?” One step forward, and then another. He’s past fear and into stupid actions, because if he can’t get his skin back, he might just take that window exit. “What you took from Hydra. I need it back.”

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-02 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
There was a wildness to the young man that Thor knew better than to press, not when he could be unpredictable. He doubted that the knife in Pietro's hand would actually do him much damage on the whole, but as he did prefer to go about his days as un-stabbed as possible, he shifted back slightly, not clearing the doorway just yet, but not actively threatening.

"If you can clarify just what it is I took, I will happily tell you where it is." He wasn't about to deny having it, not if it did, in fact, belong to Pietro, he just had to make sure that Hydra hadn't sent someone after the staff was all.

Ask for it, and it will be given. A lie, a lie just like Hydra would tell him. One last experiment, just one more thing, but it never ended. The pain never stopped. And he had come so close to freeedom, only to have it taken away once more. He longed for the sea, for the open ocean, for the freedom to swim with the pod and to feel the salt dry on his skin as they sinned themselves on distant rocks. It was cruelty to have come so close, to see his sister once already gain free, and yet to be denied it himself.
“The skin! My skin, you took it!” He lunges forward, less in the manner of one making a deliberate attack, and more in the wild nature of an animal out of control, a cornered thing with no where left to turn but to last put desperately. He is terrified, and angry, and feeling betrayed by the universe in the very same way that he had when he woke up to find himself captured by Hyda.

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-02 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Loki and his preference for knives as a weapon second only to his illusions was probably the only reason Thor sidestepped that wild lunge as easily as he did, though even so his own movements weren't intended as a counterattack, just moving aside and around Pietro, tugging the dresser drawer open and stepping back to allow him to retrieve it himself.

"I only had to make sure it didn't belong to one of my people." He explained, tone level and calm, not wanting to escalate the situation that he was still mostly puzzled over.
fastasssilver: (shocked)

[personal profile] fastasssilver 2019-10-02 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
He’s ready to make another attack, although Thor was even less of a threat and clear of the door now. But then he sees the drawer, and what’s inside, and he drops the knife. In a second, he’s across the room, all of his anger forgotten in the relief at being able to hold his skin in his hands again. Pietro cradles the bundle against his chest, holding it as a mother would her swaddled child, all gentle hands and close grip. He backs up from Thor, putting space between them because he doesn’t want to stand close, but he does not do it in fear. There’s confusion on his face now, a lack of understanding.
“You thought- you were trying to return it? Keep it safe? But no one ever does that.” All of the stories he had heard growing up, all of the talk of humans stealing their kind. And then Hydra, taking their skins and keeping them captive and not caring that they had thoughts and feelings and were people too. “You landwalkers have never thought of us as people.”
petrichorian: (concern)

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-02 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He nodded at the first questions, staying put where he was. He knew how threatening he could seem even when he wasn't trying to, and that was the last thing he needed to be here, that much was clear just by the sheer relief rolling off of Pietro, almost palpable.

The verbal jab that followed, however, just had him looking confused more than anything, giving a little shake of his head, "Honestly I didn't know there were seal-folk on Midgard, they're rare enough on Asgard." Most of them in hiding after the fall of the Valkyrie, but that was another story, "And yes, had it belonged to one of my people, it would be my duty to return it to the rightful owner. Especially if it had gone so far astray as to be found here." And if it had, in fact, belonged to one of those fallen Valkyrie, then it would have been up to him to make sure it was properly interred.

“We try to hide. The humans hunt us, steal our skins, bind us to the land. We try to hide, but there are those who still know us to be real.” Like Hydra. Like the scientists who thought it would be fun to take his skin and hurt him and see if it changed. To do the reverse, put their knives into the flesh of a seal and watch the human cry. Not everyone believed in his kind, most thought them myths, but there were enough who knew the truth that it didn’t matter. The damage they caused still cost the selkie dearly. “There’s not many of my people left.”
Maybe Thor was telling the truth after all. Pietro was holding his skin and Thor looked sorry for what had happened, and he spoke of others like Pietro where he came from. Pietro slowly begins to relax, his fingers unconsciously stroking the skin in his arms.
“I have no pod anymore. Stark ships killed them.”
petrichorian: (thinky)

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He didn't have anything to say on the matter of Stark and what he may or may not have been responsible for, but also wasn't simply going to defend him, either, they were teammates but that was all.

The rest, however, was something that he could speak to, "Your kind are rare enough on Asgard as well. They weren't always, as I understand, but these days tend towards their own company." And Thor didn't blame them for that in the least, especially if this was the treatment they'd come to expect in other realms. He also didn't know for certain if the selkie could traverse between realms with ease, though he knew the Valkyrie had been able to, and had simply assumed they all could.
fastasssilver: (tired)

[personal profile] fastasssilver 2019-10-06 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"We try to. With how the landwalkers treat us when they find us, we don't really... We don't like their company." Pietro sighs, looking down at the skin in his hands. The talk of keeping their own company makes his wistful for the pod, and the life they used to have, before the humans came with their ships, and their fishing nets, and underwater machines. Before everyone but Pietro and Wanda were killed by a Stark ship and it's machines. When he thought that life with the pod was the only kind of life that there was.
He turns over the skin, lets the top slide down, looks at the bit of flipper now exposed, and the raw scar across it. "And now... I don't even now if I'll be able to live like that. After what Hydra did..... I can barely swim."
petrichorian: (look down)

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-06 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
"And do you intend on getting retribution?" He was aware it wasn't the sort of thing he should probably ask, it wasn't the sort of thing any of the others would ask, but the fact was that it was an important question, especially if the team could help with it in any way.

Certainly, they had this robot menace to deal with, but Hydra was going to be a problem as well, and one that would need to be dealt with.
fastasssilver: (arms crossed)

[personal profile] fastasssilver 2019-10-12 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I want to. By the Waves, I want to." Anger colours his words, the angry flash of his eyes as he thinks about what he would love to do to Hydra and all of those who had hurt him and his sister. "But what could I actually do? Hydra captured us already. Better to just return to the sea and hide."
petrichorian: (cool guys don't look at explosions)

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-12 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"There are none who would blame you for that." He agreed, nodding once, "But I suspect that you know more of them and their security and base layouts than we currently have access to. That sort of information would be invaluable."

Thor wasn't up to Steve's level of strategic-mindedness, but even he knew that much, that any additional information would only be a boon.

"It's not up to just me." He hesitates, but he supposes that he can trust Thor. The man just gives off the air of honestly and desire to do good. Probably because he's not really human - no human would be so energetically good. "My sister. She's the only family I have left. If I'm staying here to help you, then there needs to be the same for her."
petrichorian: (look down)

[personal profile] petrichorian 2019-10-18 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah, the witch." It wasn't an accusation as it likely would have been from most anyone else, if anything there was an odd sort of wonder there, even an edge of respect, truthfully he was impressed by her power. It had been a very long time since anyone had been able to get inside his head at all, let alone so easily.

Certainly it was the kind of thing he should be concerned about, even afraid of, but he wasn't, not really. Mostly because he didn't think it was something she would use against him again if they had the same end goal in mind.

"I cannot make a decision for the entire team, nor would I, but if we present you both as allies against Hydra above all else, I believe there would only be token objection."
