what the water gave me

selkie au
Selkies: Sea dwelling creatures that take the form of a seal in the water, but can shed their fur and become human on land. A selkie on land must protect its pelt at all cost, as losing it means they will be unable to turn back into seal and return to the sea.
Most stories involve a selkie being tricked by a human to being trapped on land; their pelts stolen from them and hidden away. If they're lucky, sometimes they can find their skin and go home again. Other stories tell tales of selkies wooing dissatisfied humans into leaving their spouses. But the stories that can be told about selkies are as numerous as the sea is deep-- and now's your chance to take part in telling them.
how to play:
-top level with your character and your preferences for if they're a selkie or a human. provide as much detail as you like!
-reply to others
-have fun!
prompts:
1) trapped: the selkie is trapped on land. are they searching for their skin, still, or have they surrendered themselves to never being in the water again?
2) given: the selkie has given up their skin or their heart for love or some other, greater cause. is it worth it?
3) free: the selkie in the sea. perhaps they've just returned after being trapped or gone. perhaps they're just living out their lives in the water. what is it like, to be so wild?
4) calling: the selkie has spied a human they'd like to woo. will they succeed, and will it help or harm?
5) wildcard: come up with your own prompt!

The Avengers has come, and attacked Hydra, and in all of the confusion, the Maximoffs has escaped. Wanda has broken into the lab where the scientists had been working, and found her own pelt, but not Pietro’s. It was somewhere else, but she didn’t have time to search for it before they had to flee. She didn’t want to leave him, but Pietro convinced her that it would be best for her to get home. He would find out what had happened to his pelt, and then go home as well.
Returning to the Hydra castle has allowed him to access the security feeds, and the video from one of the storage areas when the hammer one, Thor wasn’t it, opened up the locked trunk and carefully removed Pietro’s pelt. In the grainy security feed, it was hard to tell, but he almost seemed to hold it tenderly, certainly far more careful with it than any of the Hydra men had ever been.
Managing to get to America, and to Stark Tower, was tricky. And yet he somehow got there in time to see several robots attacking the windows, and Stark Industries people fleeing the building, and in the chaos, he slips inside. Climbs the stairs. Hears the robot voice challenging the Avengers. He spares a thought for how outmatches they seem to be, but the fight is his chance to try to look around, to find what was taken.

One of the reasons that the Valkyrie had been formidable opponents was that they were just as deadly on foot as they were in the air, and likewise in the water, though most didn't know as much. The only reason Thor did was because he'd wanted to be one when he was younger, and they'd humored him, for a while, but he knew about the sealskins.
Which was why when he found one quite by accident amid the manifests of a Hydra site, he made sure to collect it along with the scepter that they were actually there for. It was possible of course that it belonged to a Midgardian, but if not, he needed to take it home to be properly memorialized, and if it did belong to a Midgardian, it was definitely better off in SHIELD's hands than Hydra's. Not that it was yet in SHIELD's hands, as Thor hadn't yet had a chance to find out its origins, he'd been planning to do so after the party, but then all hell had broken loose. At that moment it was in his quarters, folded neatly and tucked into his cape for safekeeping in a dresser drawer.
Though, in the chaos of an ever-increasing firefight no one -least of all Thor who was in the thick of things- was going to notice another body, especially one moving as quickly as Pietro was able.

The battle sounds have faded. Pietro’s heart speeds up. He needs to find what he came for, and get out of here. He pushes open the door to the last of the rooms, the one he’s certain must belong to thor because it’s the only one he didn’t already search. If it wasn’t in here, he’d have to- go upstairs, to the living room and team space and hope that the robots had won so that none of the Avengers were there to question what he was searching for.
“Where is it? Where is it?” He throws open cupboards, tosses the blankets off the couch, growing more worried, more desperate as he turns towards the dresser.

His brow creased a little at finding all the doors to personal quarters standing open, shifting his grasp on the hammer in his hand, moving down the hall surprisingly quietly for a man of his size, glancing into each room as he passed to confirm that there were no surprises waiting to pounce.
It was the noise from his own quarters -intended as permanent but only ever temporary- that caught his attention, brow creasing as he stepped forward, pushing the door open the rest of the way, just filling the doorway, "Can I help you?" It wasn't quite a threat, but there was definitely a warning in the tone, not entirely sure what was going on here.

“I don’t need your help.” Anger makes his face pinch up, his mouth a snarl, his accent think. No explicit threat, but in a room with someone who took his skin and is now between him and the door is very much at threat at the moment. He’s just about done with these landwalkers, and he doesn’t much care that’s Thor is apparently alien rather than human, because he still took Pietro’s skin. Stolen from thieves is still stolen.
“Where is it?” One step forward, and then another. He’s past fear and into stupid actions, because if he can’t get his skin back, he might just take that window exit. “What you took from Hydra. I need it back.”

"If you can clarify just what it is I took, I will happily tell you where it is." He wasn't about to deny having it, not if it did, in fact, belong to Pietro, he just had to make sure that Hydra hadn't sent someone after the staff was all.

“The skin! My skin, you took it!” He lunges forward, less in the manner of one making a deliberate attack, and more in the wild nature of an animal out of control, a cornered thing with no where left to turn but to last put desperately. He is terrified, and angry, and feeling betrayed by the universe in the very same way that he had when he woke up to find himself captured by Hyda.

"I only had to make sure it didn't belong to one of my people." He explained, tone level and calm, not wanting to escalate the situation that he was still mostly puzzled over.

“You thought- you were trying to return it? Keep it safe? But no one ever does that.” All of the stories he had heard growing up, all of the talk of humans stealing their kind. And then Hydra, taking their skins and keeping them captive and not caring that they had thoughts and feelings and were people too. “You landwalkers have never thought of us as people.”

The verbal jab that followed, however, just had him looking confused more than anything, giving a little shake of his head, "Honestly I didn't know there were seal-folk on Midgard, they're rare enough on Asgard." Most of them in hiding after the fall of the Valkyrie, but that was another story, "And yes, had it belonged to one of my people, it would be my duty to return it to the rightful owner. Especially if it had gone so far astray as to be found here." And if it had, in fact, belonged to one of those fallen Valkyrie, then it would have been up to him to make sure it was properly interred.

Maybe Thor was telling the truth after all. Pietro was holding his skin and Thor looked sorry for what had happened, and he spoke of others like Pietro where he came from. Pietro slowly begins to relax, his fingers unconsciously stroking the skin in his arms.
“I have no pod anymore. Stark ships killed them.”

The rest, however, was something that he could speak to, "Your kind are rare enough on Asgard as well. They weren't always, as I understand, but these days tend towards their own company." And Thor didn't blame them for that in the least, especially if this was the treatment they'd come to expect in other realms. He also didn't know for certain if the selkie could traverse between realms with ease, though he knew the Valkyrie had been able to, and had simply assumed they all could.

He turns over the skin, lets the top slide down, looks at the bit of flipper now exposed, and the raw scar across it. "And now... I don't even now if I'll be able to live like that. After what Hydra did..... I can barely swim."

Certainly, they had this robot menace to deal with, but Hydra was going to be a problem as well, and one that would need to be dealt with.

Thor wasn't up to Steve's level of strategic-mindedness, but even he knew that much, that any additional information would only be a boon.

Certainly it was the kind of thing he should be concerned about, even afraid of, but he wasn't, not really. Mostly because he didn't think it was something she would use against him again if they had the same end goal in mind.
"I cannot make a decision for the entire team, nor would I, but if we present you both as allies against Hydra above all else, I believe there would only be token objection."
