( The idea of soul mates never brought Dimitri any comfort. The mark on his hand had appeared at a young age, and he remembered the happiness and curiosity it brought the attendants of the royal family. He remembered the constant order to touch hands with girls and young ladies, the subtle urging for him to do the same with boys and young men when watchful eyes were turned away. The exchanges had only ever been met with disappointment, promises from his servants and attendants that he would one day find the other half of the tattoo on his hand. But with every bit of disappoint from others and the constant stream of people who looked only at this title and future instead of him, Dimitri wondered if it was truly worth it to find his "other half". To find them was no guarantee of love or happiness, after all.

As he grew older, the trend continued. The only break from touching hands had come following the massacre that stole his father from him from this world. And later, the journey to the Officers Academy. There, it started all over again. Girls flocked to him regardless of their origin, boys reluctantly stuck out their hands. Dedue had been the only thing to keep him sane during those moments by herding away hopefuls or leading him away to silence. He had truly become tired of the notion of a soul mate before he'd even found them.

And then the war began. Fueled by a partnership between Edelgard and her own soul mate, Hubert. A dangerous pair as just classmates, but a damning foe as partners in a war. As soul mates, however platonic they might have been.

Dimitri remembered hating Edelgard for that, too. Someone who would bring war upon three nations for her own twisted reasons had found their soul mate so early, so easily. She never had to endure the false affections of hopefuls with marks on their hands. She had someone at her side, willing to put their life on the line without question. But he had nothing. Only a burning hatred and anger that ate away at his humanity, a maddening guilt that brought him to his knees more than once. An unmatched mark on his hand that told him there was someone out there who might have been able to comfort him, to bring him closer to his goal of vengeance. But they were no where to be found. In those years when darkness consumed him so violently, he hated his soul mate. The nameless person who left him to suffer - alone.

But now, brought to his senses once more, that hatred was gone. There was only a quiet wonder of what it might be like to meet the person whose mark would match up perfectly with his own. Would they see him for what he was - a monster, a blood-thirsty beast? Or would they see past that, feel genuine relief and happiness to have found him? Dimitri told himself every time that thought came to him that it would always be the former. There was nothing honorable left of him for them to have. And he was grateful that at least now, the constant need for him to touch hands with strangers was over. His people had long since forgotten about the mark on his hand after years of thinking him dead and his return.

Still, Dimitri found his eye drawn constantly to people's hands constantly out of so many years of doing so. It was the only reason he'd caught sight of the mark on Felix's hand earlier that day in a rare moment of seeing the other man switch out his gloves. The motion had been quick, evidence that Felix was hiding it, but still, he hadn't missed it. How could he, when he'd looked at Felix's hands so often when they were children and even at the academy? Always so hopeful that one day a tattoo might appear there only to be disappointed. Sylvain teased him often that it was for the best that he never saw one - surely Felix would be a terrible soul mate, anyway.

Hours later, just outside the grand hall, Dimitri couldn't explain to himself what he was waiting for. There was a persistent thought that told him to be patient, that he had to be there for a reason. And he listened, lingered thoughtfully for a few moments. He'd been prepared to turn and make his way back to his quarters when he spotted Felix coming towards him, no doubt to take the path back to his own quarters. )

Felix. ( Dimitri greeted, the tattoo beneath his glove burning, almost painful against his skin. A pain that was solely in his thoughts, fueled by emotions with no real physical threat. ) Do you have a moment?

( A moment for what, Dimitri told himself he wasn't certain. But the way his hand burned told him he knew exactly why, even if he refused to acknowledge it even to himself. And once more, those thoughts of uncertainty came to him. He'd been alone for so long, tainted his own idea of a soul mate for years, and yet here he was, distracted by an unfamiliar hope over a mark he hadn't seen clearly.

Was he really so eager for another disappointment? )

[Whizzer can't say he believes all the nonsense about soulmates. For starters he knows enough couples with cutely matching tattoos ('I like your eyes / I like your everything' or 'Can I buy you a drink / Does it come with a date') who spend their lives ignoring each other as hard as possible in direly domestic settings. He knows enough who hate each other, too, and has to say he'd prefer to be on the verge of ripping someone's throat out than pretending they don't exist: it's hotter, at least.

Hell, sometimes he screws people precisely because they piss him off, but even with the amount of skin he's explored in his life, he's yet to come across someone with his words sketched into theirs.

So it's not something he thinks about. And certainly not on this job: a cattle call of celebrity photos prior to an award ceremony later in the evening. He's spent the whole day snapping people obsessed with good sides they don't have and yelling at him that their (wonky) nose doesn't look straight. He takes a pretty picture, but he's no miracle worker.

So here's the last job of the day, and he's stepped out for a while for some air. When he's back, the man of this particular moment's already in place on a stool in front of a red curtain.

Whizzer strides in with barely a glance, checking his camera before looking up at the subject. And his perfectly smooth forehead starts to knit.]
