( used to be, he always came home to an empty house.

he'd sell the thing if he weren't so damn stubborn. maybe split the money with his sisters, take his mother on a vacation some place with open skies and sandy beaches. but the truth is, they'd never let him. it's a good house, his mother would say. on good land. she's always been good about separating the history of an object with its utility.

sam just looks at it as a place he lives for now. he crashes on billie's couch about half as often as he sleeps in his own bed in his inherited house. the bed that, perhaps rather tellingly, is in the guest room rather than the master suite. he has no interest in claiming the space, he leaves the whole top floor alone, though he'd told flora she could roam wherever she liked and take whichever of the four other bedrooms she fancied while her apartment was (presumably) having the plumbing fixed.

and it's been nice, to buck the tradition of the old, turn-of-the-century queen anne victorian manor, almost, being well-lit and homey when he gets off shift (if he gets off shift.) flora's been trying to make sure he has food to come home to, he's found himself buying groceries that aren't just cans of processed soup and cold cereal and protein bars and his own weight in whatever vitamins his diet is sorely lacking. he bought kale just a few days ago. kale.

but for now, he's coming home after a long shift, and he's ready to kick his shoes off and crawl into bed. it's one of those nights where the sky is growling like a wolf, black thunderheads overhead blotting out the moon. he always sleeps better with a storm overhead — his grandmother says it was like that the night he was born, and that's how she knew he would be a shifter. the first in his family since his great-grandmother.

the house, unusually since flora had taken up residence, is dark when he comes home. power outage, maybe, something confirmed when he steps inside and flicks the porch light a few times. )

Flora?

( his voice is all but drowned out by the torrential downpour against the roof, cascading through the gutters. rather than raise it and risk scaring her, he just takes his boots off, sets them by the door and walks through the house with his eyes closed so they'll be adjusted to the darkness when he opens them again, operating from memory and spatial awareness with one hand faintly outstretched.

he finds her in the living room. or... what he assumes is her, given that he's not in the habit of letting other foxes into his house. she's dissected his couch and built herself a tiny little fort just barely big enough for her fox-form and when the vivid flashes of light outdoors illuminate her well enough to see, he can tell she's distressed.

he shifts too, between one moment and the next, and hops as a crow over to her. crows have notoriously poor night vision, so he mostly relies on what he'd gleaned of the space as a human rather than attempt to divine the shadows as he hops in alongside her, a relatively light weight atop her unhappy curled-up body.

he puffs up a bit, like a crow settling in for bad weather, and starts grooming her fur with his beak. it's meant to soothe, though he can't say how successful he is or isn't at it. )

[It's been thunderstorming for the better part of the day, making a trip out to the clubhouse something totally out of the question. The big fight also makes it out of the question, because Richie's still stubbornly not speaking to Bill, Eddie's on house arrest, probably forever, and who the fuck knows about everyone else?

Which means it's just Stan and Richie at La Casa de Tozier today, hunkered down in the furnished basement and waiting. Richie's pulled the cushions off the couch and thrown a sheet over the top of them, because if he's being denied hammock and/or clubhouse time and not wanting to go back to the arcade yet, at least he's going to do it in style, with sleeping bags and basically every bag of chips, Cheetos and popcorn they've got in the house.

Richie's flipping disinterestedly through a Batman comic, fidgeting. The day is dragging, and he's feeling weird and penned in. He doesn't really want to talk about the fight, definitely doesn't want to tell Stan about what happened at the arcade, but the silence sucks.]

So, how pissed is your dad? [Richie had been surprised Stan had even been allowed to answer the phone, let alone come over to hang out after his speech at the Bar Mitzvah.]

[Whizzer's not the easiest of patients, at least not on a good day, not on a day when he's feeling fine, well enough to be home. When he feels like there's no reason to be stuck in the hospital other than some malevolent intern's intentions to use him as a pincushion.

Whizzer's not the easiest of patients, but he's not playing escape artist – yet. If someone doesn't come in to run his tests soon, though, he might just climb out a window and down the medical waste chute to freedom.

For now he's opting for defence over freedom. Which is why anyone opening the door to his little white room will find a slow growing stack of pillows he's liberated from the supply closet along the hall, a wide sweep of blanket and, at first glance, no sign of Whizzer. Other, perhaps, than a shadow under the sheet, there's no sign of Whizzer at all.]

(Really, it was one of the first things that came to mind. Eliot wasn't really that great at bonding with his new wife despite the fact that he knew it was his duty. He couldn't help it! She was nothing like Margo, so he knew making dick jokes and offering alcohol or drugs wasn't going to cut it.

Fen was his soft wife. Pretty wife. She deserved nice things, even if he wasn't so sure he could give them to her.

So while she was out of her room one day, he gathered all of the sheets and soft things he could find and, with the help of a begrudging Tick, built the most magnificent blanket fort in the bedroom that he could. It was basically a blanket castle. And Eliot, perhaps, drifts off to sleep in it after his hard work, waiting for Fen to return to him.)
