The Brought Down To Normal Meme

You are normal. Utterly normal. There are no superpowers in your life, no magic, no action movie fight scenes, no spaceships or dramatic battles between good and evil. The last exciting thing that happened to you was getting a free coffee with your tenth Starbucks purchase. And yet something seems a little...off.

Mental Status:
1. Taken In Completely: You've never been anything really special, you're sure of it. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is obviously a crazy person.
2. A Sense of Unease: You don't feel comfortable in your own life, but you can't figure out why. Maybe you just need to go on vacation and shake that wanderlust off your shoulders--it can't be anything more meaningful.
3. Strong Suspicions: You keep getting flashbacks to a life you once knew and memories you can't completely recover. The picture's not complete, not yet, but somehow you know things aren't how they should be.
4. WTF Is This?: You remember everything about your old life, but nobody around you will believe you. Will you break free of the illusion, or is a peaceful illusion better than a harsh reality?

Normal-Inducer:
1. The Matrix Has You: You're locked in a dream machine that's created an alternate reality for you to live in. A boring one.
2. Reality-Warping: Someone's changed the universe to be more to their tastes, and you along with it.
3. Pulled a Brazil: Your real life is so horrific that your mind has retreated into something more banal. The best place to hide is in-sanity.
4. Please Wake Up: You've gotten yourself into a coma and for lack of anything better to do you've made up an entire world for yourself to live in.
5. Hypnosis: The world's the same, but your mind's been altered to make you think you're nothing but a mere dull mortal.
6. Wildcard

Post your name/canon, write out a brief scenario for your normal character, then RNG or pick an option to see how deep the rabbit hole goes. The other poster can be a part of the illusion, the cause of the illusion, or someone who's been sent in to yank you back out.

[ This time, Derek doesn't bother to restrain her instincts. She reaches out and wraps her hand in the teenager's flannel shirt, whirling her around. She reaches behind her to slam the hood of the camaro down, and then presses her down against it. ]

Who the hell are you, thinking you know anything about my family? I've never even met you before in my life.

[ She growls, teeth lengthening against her will, and her eyes flashing blue. ]

[ Stiles lets out a girlish yelp and, okay, so she's imagined this a couple of times but it was usually a lot more steamy and with a lot less clothes. ]

Dude! What the hell is your problem! Is this some kind of joke, because it's not fucking funny, Derek. Did you hit your head when you rolled out of the subway station?

[ She stills then, catching the flash of blue instead of red, her own eyes widening. ]

Holy shit, they're blue! What, oh my god, what happened?! Are you not the Alpha anymore? What -

[ Derek growls again, shoving the back down against the camaro again. Her eyes widen, and then narrow. For some reason her body still doesn't feel alarmed, and that's alarming in and of itself. ]

I've never been an Alpha. If I had been and wasn't anymore, I would be dead.

[ She growls at the girl. ]

Now tell me who you are before I decide to rip your throat out with my teeth.

I've heard that line so many times and yet you've never gone through with it.

[ She tries to grin but seeing as how Derek is not budging on this, she swallows a little and nods. ]

Stiles - Stiles Stilinski, the Sheriff's daughter? We've known each other for about two years now and you have a pack and I'm part of it. You're - supposed to be, at least - the Alpha and I don't know why you're not anymore or why you don't remember me..

[ And that hurts a lot more than she thought it would, can't keep the way her heart beats achingly at the thought. ]

You're a werewolf, Derek, use your spiderwolf senses, you can tell when I'm lying. Am I?

[ She knows about Sheriff Stilinski - the man had taken Kate Argent in, but where there should be information about his family it gets very... fuzzy.

She's never been one to do as someone she doesn't trust tells her to, but the frantic heartbeat of the teenager never skips as she tells Derek her story. ]

You might not be. [ She reluctantly concedes it, but still keeps the teen pinned to the car. ] But that doesn't mean you're right. I haven't - I haven't met you before. And I'm not an Alpha. I'm not meant to be.

[ Her words falter because she's not sure she hasn't met this person, but if she has, why doesn't she remember? ]

Yes you have! And you know I'm telling the truth, I know you know, you like to remind me of it every time I try to lie to you - spoiler: it never works.

[ Stiles huffs a sigh and runs her hands through her short hair. ]

Look, I don't know what's going on and maybe - maybe it's me. Maybe I got sucked into some sort of alternate reality where you're not an alpha and your whole family never -

[ She cuts herself off quick from that line of thinking. ] Anyway, today's felt off all goddamn day and now I know why. I'm in the goddamn twilight zone.

Do you spend a lot of time lying to me?

[ It tumbles out before she can help herself, and then she shakes her head. The girl - Stiles' - words don't register until a moment later, and the uneasy feeling returns tenfold. ]

My whole family never what?

No?

[ Stiles tries to smile, all pretty white teeth and hopes that just this once her lie gets by Derek. ]

Neeeeeever found out about Kate? Tell you about the Alpha thing? Any number of things, really, and could you please um, let me up? Pretty sure my back's not supposed to bend this way for so long..

You're lying.

[ And that's startling - the way Derek already knows all of this teen's tells, like the back of her hand.

But the point of the matter is, she's lying. About everything. ]

Your father arrested Kate when she tried to kill me after I confronted her. Either way, you just lied. Again.

[ She does not, in fact, let her up. ]

[ Oh, huh. Well, that's - that's not right, what? Stiles gives Derek a confused look at that and tries to play off the rest. ]

I really don't think I should tell you considering neither of us know what's going on. I know you, clearly, but you don't know me - or remember at least.

[ Derek continues looming, giving the girl an annoyed look (and isn't that familiar, Stiles?) She's speaking with a mix of sarcasm and annoyance when she opens her mouth again. ]

Maybe if you told me what you know, it'd jog something loose.

[ Oh it's familiar alright, too familiar, really. ]

If I do that you might really rip my throat out with your teeth and I'd kinda like to keep living.

What exactly is so terrible about my family that you can't tell me about it?

[ But even as the words leave her mouth there's something that crosses over Stiles' face, that's in the back of her own mind that make her falter. ]

[ She hates this, she really does and she shakes her head because she can't. Derek - Derek seems happy with whatever is going on here and god, had she ever seen Derek happy?

She really doesn't want to be the one to take that away. ]

I can't, I'm sorry...

[ Derek growls, pushing Stiles down again before she pulls away, stalking off to the side. She runs her hands through her hair. ]

Then we have to figure out what's going on. You smell - you smell like me, like pack. And I've felt off all day, but I didn't know why.

[ She turns to look at Stiles, clearly perplexed - more emotion showing on her face than normal. ]

You might have something to do with it.

Well duh, I did say that I was part of the pack you refuse to believe that you have because your memories are messed up or something...

[ Stiles sits up, popping her back a little and then moves up to sit on the front bumper of the car. ]

Me? It's totally not me.

I'm not saying you did it, I'm saying you might be the key to fixing it.

[ Derek pops her neck after a moment. ]

We should take you to my family. They might be able to help.

No! I mean, we don't need to tell them just yet, right? You're a good detective-type, you know, we could just figure it out on your own.

[ Mostly because she doesn't think she could take seeing Derek finding out her family was gone, again. ]

If you're from an alternate reality [ Derek says it sarcastically, showing how much she doesn't believe it, even if she feels like something is wrong, ] Then they're the ones that will be able to help you. It'll be faster.

And if I'm not then - then you're really going to not like me, probably.

[ God, how she wishes she things were back to normal and Derek was back to her normally grouchy, broody self. ]

Can't help you on my own, so we're going to my family.

[ She jerks her head towards Laura's camaro. ]

Get in, my sister needs this back anyway.

[ It's on the tip of her tongue to tell Derek the truth but she can't. She can't be the one to do that. She would suck as a cop, she realizes. She'd never be able to hand out bad news. ]

Okay, sure.

[ She backs away from Derek and scuttles around to the passenger side, then gets in and seat belts herself in. ]

[ Derek arches her brow at Stiles' heisitation but eventually she gets into the car. Derek nods, glancing around the shop before she gets in as well. She starts the car and pulls out, then hops back out to close the doors and lock up quickly.

Then she's back into the car, shifting gears and heading out towards her family home. ]

Say I'm the one who's forgotten everything. How do I know you?

My best friend got bit and turned into a werewolf and I got dragged along for the ride, basically. And I help out a lot, like, all the time. I'm the research gal.

[ This is all stuff Derek should know already, she thinks and frowns at having to retell it. ]

Who bit him - an omega?

[ It's Derek's not so subtle way of prying for information as she drives the roads that lead to her house.

It takes her a moment to realize that she assumes her friend is male, and not female, and frowns at herself. ]
