[ Well, that was fun.

The first day of the Ethereal Moon felt as though it had packed forty-eight hours worth of conflict into it, as yet another round table conference demonstrated just how thin and fraying were the ropes that bound together the Alliance. Lord Gloucester had an impressive (and frustrating, oooh so frustrating) gift for turning every subject to the benefits of bending knee to the Empire, and it was only Holst's intervention that finally shut him up. Not that they'd made much progress thereafter.

But, they'd come. All of them. The mask on display for the outer world held, the cracks largely infinitesimal.

And Lorenz and Hilda had been in attendance. One face maybe more welcome than the other. That face scowled less at him.

After catching up and paying the necessary attention to the rest, Claude excused himself. At well past-midnight, and after such a thrilling day, he might be excused exhaustion. Though he doesn't retreat to bed. After swinging by the kitchens, then the wyverns, he settles at the stables.

Rather, on the stables.

He might not be able to climb a tree, but he'd figured out a method with rope and arrow, and there's enough surrounding to help him up. The odds of being discovered here must be small, if not vanishing. The air has a bite to it, but overall it's warm for a winter night. Only the beasts below, and it's secure in that knowledge that he reclines on the roof, arms crossed beneath his head, eyes fixed to the sky.

Velvet and bursting with stars, but for one and how fitting that the blue sea star has gone into hiding. Almost five years now, hasn't it been, with the millenium festival a few weeks away. Not that there'd be much of a festival, but thinking of it loosed the knotting in his shoulders, plucked at the weight. Teach -- they'd promised.

They'd promised.

Only by holding to that, do his dreams keep in hand against the sky. These days, he thinks they might otherwise spin out, swallowed by the clusters.

Might even sleep here. His mind's too busy for that just yet, so Claude gazes, reaching half-blind for the dried peaches he'd filched at the kitchens. And if he accidentally drops one, a slice that goes skipping down the sloping surface and plummets into the night, it isn't as though there's anyone to notice. ]

[ the night air chills dimitri to his core. something about the rush of wind, something about the smothering cold that fills his lungs makes it difficult to move, to breathe. he isn't sure why he'd thought asking claude to meet him outside, at night, during the ethereal moon was a good idea, but here he is, wrapping himself tightly in his blue drapery and hoping to the goddess that claude join him soon.

as he waits, he's already spotted a few constellations he remembers from his professor's lessons. the goddess, the daughter, the archer, the bear, the compass... the distractions are serving to warm him up, though dimitri remains unaware of his own intent focus. by the time he remembers that claude should be joining him, the chill of the winter once again wraps dimitri in its chilling embrace, and he gives a wholebodied shiver before lowering back down to the grass underneath him, just as cold.

[Sitting outside in the middle of the night is, in fact, bog standard for the trio at this point in all of their lives. Alucard knows it, Sypha knows it, Trevor knows it. But at least when all three of them are home at the castle, there's the option of sitting in the small space that separates the Castle from the Belmont Ruins, and being outside is a choice rather than a requirement.

Also a choice: that Alucard's got two wolf pups curled up on his chest, while his own head is in Sypha's lap, eyes nominally looking skyward but mostly up at her. A little beyond them is a brass contraption (an actual telescope that Dracula made), and the night is cool without being cold.]

I think it should be starting in a few minutes, but that means all of us have to move if you wish to use the telescope.

[ They travel for longer than they need to, through forests and following streams until the setting sun bounces off rippling water and leaves Orochimaru squinting and silently counting off all the reasons he knew this was the wrong direction to take, his gaze fixated on a mess of white hair in front of him as he considers just how necessary it is for him to return to Konoha with a partner.

Leave it to Jiraiya to find the most inconvenient path home.

By the time they've located a spot which is suitable for camping overnight — there's still several miles to cover but they're low on chakra and Orochimaru is even lower on patience — the sky has shifted from blazing fire to a dark curtain hanging heavy as his hair. He glances up while setting traps at the edge of their space (nothing outstanding, but in dark like this it will do more than its job, why waste more resources?) and follows the line of stars to the moon hanging low and dark between the trees. ]

Some consider this a bad omen.
