[ Last night, the weather turned unseasonably cold. Ella had felt the frost upon the wind in the evening when she'd collected herbs to use in a poultice for the master's prized steed; poor creature had been overridden again, its leg still not healed from the wound it received a fortnight ago upon unsteady ground. Back then, the sun had shone beautifully every morning and the household had been as if in springtime.

Today, they mope in a hazy, gray dawn that seems to be unending. Gloom settles in every crack the same as the cold, windows neglected to be barricaded and doors fortified against winter's first icy fingers. Such tasks should have been completed yesterday, but the master's imperative that a feast be made for his fine guests soon to arrive had been law. Now, all must suffer for misplaced priorities.

To look at Ella's face, however, is to see the highest point of summer. She beams. The chill doesn't wither the apples of her cheeks, nor does it make her resent the windows thrown open so carelessly throughout the manor. Cold stone bites through her dress as she leans on the pane of a side window and out into the open air. In contribution to her precarious balancing act, her hand, outstretched, finally meets its target - the warm, celestial-golden hair of the elf who stands at the servants' entrance.

She thinks how funny it is to see him, regal and wild in equal parts, at this door.

She thinks how at odds he is with a day like this one.

She thinks of little else after that, when she pulls him in for a simple but eager kiss. ]

[Whether the world is experiencing the heat of summer or the chill of winter, he is unchanged. What he wears is perhaps at odds with the chill she feels, yet upon touching him, she will find all the warmth she desires. His arms are steady and strong as they slip around her waist and he draws her to him, protecting her from the winds that threaten to steal her light.

He has never met a mortal with such light, after all. She is like a rare bloom or a star and he meets her kiss with a low sound of approval. Such pleasures, however, must come to an end and when they part, he caresses her cheek, glancing around them for signs of her Master.]
