The glory of Rome! The pageantry of medieval times! The etiquette of the Regency era! The glamour of the twenties, the free-wheeling of the seventies, and - of course - the final frontier of the future.

O P T I O N S:

 

 

 

1) Greco-Roman - Togas! Tunics! Gladiatorial fights and getting stabbed right in the forum! (And that's really sensitive, you know.) Maybe you're in the recently-conquered Londinium, or maybe you've made your home in Pompeii and ... hey, do you hear that?

2) Medieval - Jousting! Pointy hats! Castles! Dormice inside of a rabbit inside of a chicken inside of a duck inside of a swan inside of a pig inside of a cow! Are you royalty, a peasant, or something in between?

3) Renaissance - It's a time of discovery and revelation! New scientific breakthroughs are being made every day, and incredible literature and poems are being written all the time. Perhaps you've made your home in Venice, and you're adding to the flow of progress - or fighting against it.

4) Victorian/Edwardian - Everything is repressed and a series of gestures with a fan can make or break a hopeful suitor's night. There are balls and salons and ridiculously thorough rules of etiquette. Are you solving mysteries with Sherlock Holmes or drinking absinthe in a bar by the Moulin Rouge?

5) 1920s - Flappers! Prohibition! Everyone's dancing the Charleston and watching these new silent movies. That is, unless they've escaped to Paris to drink a lot and write about the human condition. Do you party like the world's about to end or ponder what would happen if it did?

6) 1950s - Are you willing to leave it to Beaver? It's the time of adorable housedresses, three-martini lunches, and everyone owning a brand new refrigerator - on credit! Gee whiz, it sure is great, isn't it?

 

...wait, what was that about nuclear bombs?

7) 1970s - Disco! Margaret Thatcher! Drugs! The '70s are a time of social upheaval and change, not to mention leisure suits. Are you at the forefront of feminism or busting a move at the discotheque?

8) Present day - it's now! Everyone's got an iPhone and a Facebook and are constantly Twittering about their MySpace. People are more connected than ever, and the world is growing smaller and smaller every day.

9) The future! - The final frontier! Are we colonizing Mars or exploring the galaxy in a big, groovy spaceship? Have we made first contact yet? Has someone finally gotten around to inventing Holodecks? If you can dream it, maybe it's happened!

10) Got a different/better idea? Some time or place I didn't think of? This is for you!

1) Having a meal! With your family, your significant other, your best friend. Is it fit for a king or what you've managed to scrounge together from what's left?

2) A night's entertainment! Going to see a show at the Globe Theater, taking in a movie, or watching a troupe of performers put on a passion play - either way, it won't be a dull night.

3) Courting! Maybe you're in an arranged marriage, or necking in the backseat of your best guy's T-Bird at the drive-in movie theater.

4) School! Are you learning from Miss Emmeline at a one-room schoolhouse, taking notes on Latin from the tutor your father hired, or at a British boarding school?

5) It's a party! Maybe you're having a hell of a time at Studio 54 or giggling behind your fan at a ball with your best friend while you wait for the boys you like to ask you to dance.

6) Political intrigue! Is someone trying to stage a coup for your throne? Is your political rival trying to knock you out of the Senate?

7) Rivals! Maybe you're two lords fighting over the same eligible lady, or maybe he's picked on you since you were both kids growing up on the same block.

8) Family! You've got kids now, or maybe you are the kids. Perhaps you're out from dawn till dusk tilling the fields, or your biggest concern is making sure your daughters marry well.

9) Market day! Are you at the mall checking out the newest saddle shoes and cuffed denim? Are you making your way to the nearest town with sheep and cows to sell?

It was a rare occasion when Scott got to go out for anything much but today he had a little extra money from a couple of overtime hours he'd managed to squeeze in, so he was grabbing a bite to eat at the local burger joint. He'd chosen to eat inside because he was already hungry and he'd stashed the food for his mother to enjoy after her shift in his backpack.

That said, he couldn't help but keep looking up at the guy across the restaurant. He looked... familiar?

Private Stilinski, mostly known 'round the reg as Stiles, flops down on the narrow bed opposite his best friend and corporal. It's been four months since their lives turned upside-down — moreso than the start of the war, which even in Saipan halfway to the front lines, still seems distant and impossible, happening to some other young Americans teens. Four months since the bite, and Scott's abrupt promotion, the attention of the higher-ups making Stiles both a little jealous and, to be honest, kind of worried for his friend. Being a werewolf had its perks, sure, but sometimes it seemed way more trouble than it was worth — for both of them.

From within his baggy jacket, he pulls a pack of jerky, tosses it easily over at Scott's head, though his aim is, uh, pretty bad.

Stiles has never had a problem snitching rations and pulling booze or snacks or cigarettes, it's part of the benefit of being on the ball when it comes to the word around camp. Earlier today, he'd stolen the general's correspondence and found out when they were next due to move on, and traded the knowledge for something more to eat than the beans and grits and muddy water they'd been subsisting on for weeks.

"I'm so freaking bored," he complains, pulling out a second package (this one boiled sweets) and opening it one-handed, the other pillowing his close-cropped head. "I would literally take the Japs springing us over this level of boredom."

He hadn't so much chosen to go as been forced into it, along with most of the other residents. With the war raging, the military needed all the medical professionals they could get, including ones capable of doing counseling. It hadn't mattered that he wasn't technically a psychiatrist, still a good year and a half away from taking his boards--he had experience enough in treating mental illness, and that practical background was all they cared about.

His new schedule was something of a flashback to when he'd trained as an intern. Rather than assessing a host of already-referred patients, he found himself walking the wards and trying to determine which patients required therapy on top of treatment for their physical wounds. It was a messy system, time-consuming and inefficient, and he couldn't deny that it wore on him.

It had to be just a product of the weariness, he told himself. The day when they'd received a large influx of wounded soldiers, filling the high-ceilinged rooms with yells and screams--his reaction then had to have been an isolated response to the stress. Never mind that he'd re-experienced it a few times since--the sudden, claustrophobic terror that had left him shaking and gasping. It had to be transitory, specific to this set of circumstances, something that would pass as soon as he was back home.

Still, that doesn't quench the feeling of dread that sinks into the pit of his stomach as he stands over the sink, gazing at his pallid reflection as he wills his breathing to settle. He's still trembling slightly, but less than he'd been for the past few minutes, enough that no one should notice on his way out. He runs his fingers back through his greased hair in a brief attempt at making himself look more presentable, sighs, then washes his hands and steps back into the quiet half-darkness, making his way towards the door.

Perhaps, he lies to himself, a good night's sleep might help.

[Most people hide their names on the 'net with pseudonyms--inside jokes, holo-show or classical lit references, or little taunts against the authorities trying to shut the entire hacker sub-culture down.

Hermes does not, though many think he does. His name does not show up on any government registration lists. He does not have the serial number and file imposed on every child at birth, though he was only born two and a half years ago. To the all-encompassing corporate-run government he is only Subject 524, and Subject 524 is listed as a failed experiment. Good experiments don't leave the lab.

For the most part he lives an isolated life, only leaving his complex wetware hookup to eat or rest. His needs are adequately filled by remote, untraceable purchases.

But there do come times of necessity and he's summoned a potential ally to his door.]
