the ghost meme.
![]() Welcome to the meme where the dead meet the living. One of you is a breathing meatsack and the other is a wandering spirit, and for some reason fate has brought you together. Post your name/canon, use the RNG to pick a scenario or choose for yourself. Multiple scenarios are also totally cool. I. DEAD 1. Poltergeist | The afterlife is for squares. You just want to rattle the cupboards and drop buckets of water on people...or something a bit more hazardous. 2. Forgetful Ghost | Dead? What are they talking about, of course you're still alive. Maybe walls aren't as solid as they used to be but you're still going about business as usual. 3. Vengeful Spirit | You've suffered, and you want to make sure everyone else knows your pain. Intimately. Go raise some hell. 4. Unfinished Business | There's something you still need to do and you can't move on until it's finished. Let's see if the living can help the dead. 5. Happily Dead | You don't have any anger management issues or leftover to-dos, you're just peacefully haunting your resting place. Being ghostly doesn't mean being rude. 6. Wildcard II. LIVING 1. Ghost Hunter | The ghost didn't come to you, you went to the ghost. Maybe you're there to banish it to the afterlife, maybe you're there to film it for a low-budget SciFi channel show. Hold the camera steady. 2. Psychic | You see dead people everywhere you go. It's a gift or a curse depending on how you look at it, but this is just an average day for you. 3. New Resident | Boy, this Victorian house/grubby apartment/abandoned insane asylum sure was a bargain. There may be some slight problems with creaking floorboards and agonized screaming, but it's nothing a little DIY won't fix. 4. Ghost's Helper | For some reason this ghost really needs you. You're the descendent of its murderer, or the only one who can complete the ritual that will set it free. 5. Innocent Victim | You had nothing to do with this. The ghost just really hates your guts. Time to get an old priest and a young priest. 6. Wildcard |

Bucky Barnes | MCU
post-endgame
She hadn't been around for her funeral, which is probably a blessing. She remembers dying, remembers the quiet relief she felt when she realized that this was it, and then she remembers opening her eyes here, but nothing of the in-between.
Bucky has never made any indication of being able to see her, but that doesn't stop her from lingering in his apartment regardless. At first, time had held very little meaning to her. Sometimes she would blink and suddenly half the day would be gone, sometimes it felt like time was moving molasses-slow. Things seem to be settling down now, though, and if it wasn't for the fact that he doesn't respond when she murmurs his name (and the fact that she can drift right through his walls if she's not careful) she might even think she wasn't actually dead.
Being dead is peaceful, but it is also pretty boring. She can't pick up a book long enough to read it, which means she's reduced to reading magazine pages that are left open, and she can't operate the remote to turn the TV on, so she can only watch what Bucky feels like watching, which is usually terrible and too infrequent to count as a distraction. Sometimes she drifts into the neighbor's apartment to watch what they're watching, but their taste is even worse than Bucky's, and she misses him when she's gone, so she always comes back. She spends a lot of her time aimlessly lingering in the background, watching him as he cooks himself dinner or answers emails or talks on the phone with Sam. She draws the line at watching him sleep, though, so when he takes himself off to his bedroom, she always stays in the living room, hovering by the couch, settling in for a boring night with nothing to distract herself.
She doesn't sleep, per se, but she does drift mentally, sometimes feeling like she's some sort of laptop put into power-saver mode, ready to be switched back on at a moment's notice but otherwise left to idle in the background.
The creak of Bucky's door sliding open is what prompts her to open her eyes and perk herself back up; she watches as he comes shuffling out of his room and collapses on the couch, looking rumpled and sleepy and haunted. (Heh.)
Reaching out to card her fingers through his hair, even though she knows he won't feel her touch, she sighs softly. ] Hey, Buck. [ What she wouldn't give to be able to smooth his hair from his face, to pull a blanket up over his shoulders, to tuck him in and promise him to keep watch. He's not been taking care of himself, that much is obvious, and she desperately wishes she could do it for him. ] Can't sleep?

But she made her choice, and she had beautiful kids he wishes he'd known about before. Wishes he could have met them when they were actually kids. Used to have this fantasy of being an uncle, or a godfather.
She goes not long after that day on the bench, passing on the shield. He gets a few months with her, but nothing more than that. It's bittersweet, it hurts more than it helps, and when she fades out finally he disassociates a little. Feels like he's stepped outside of his body, like he's moved somewhere to the left of the timeline once again. Frozen as the world keeps moving while he's standing still.
He doesn't sleep so good anymore. Has dreams that are either too good or too bad, and either way they wake him up feeling a little worse off than when he laid down. Spends a while staring at the ceiling, just to start feeling claustrophobic in the bedroom. Winds up on the couch, scrubbing his face with his hands and settling with his elbows on his knees and his fingertips pressing into his eyelids.
Sits like that for a while, with his vision blocked out and his ears all the sharper for it, sensory adjustment, auditory compensation. In the silence of his apartment, he hears a breath and the hair on the back of his neck stands up.
Whatever they gave him, sometimes he wonders...
He exhales, drops his hands, casts his eyes to the floor and mutters darkly: ]
Stupid.
[ Himself, his decisions, the situation, the idle thoughts. Maybe all of it, he's not sure. Can't even drink his grief, it just doesn't work.
He thinks about leaving, but in the end he might've found one problem he can't actually outrun. ]

(She'd looked for him, she had. She told Peggy everything she could remember about the Winter Soldier file, she tried everything she could think of to try and find him before he was systematically destroyed and remade, but no matter how hard she tried to be everything to everyone, she simply couldn't. Peggy always accused her of having a savior complex, and she was right, but that never stopped her from trying regardless.)
Honestly, she thought she'd have more time after all was said and done. She thought she wouldn't age so quickly, she'd thought that she'd be able to reconcile with him properly, she thought that she could have her cake and eat it too. Of course it figures that the one time she wishes she had more time she'd be denied it.
Listening to the rasp of Bucky's voice as he chides himself makes her chest ache. Settling herself down beside him, she runs her fingers through his hair again, trying to ignore how through she was actually going, and leans herself against his side, all but draped over his back like she's always wished she could do. ]
Don't say that. [ She's given up on him hearing her, but that doesn't mean she doesn't respond to him when he speaks anyway. ] Unless you're talking about me, in which case fuck you too, pal. [ She smiles, regret and guilt twisting the expression her ghostly face produces, but it doesn't stop her from going so far as to rest her head on his shoulder anyway, careful not to let herself fall through him. ] You're not wrong, though. I always did make stupid decisions without you to stop me.

His scalp tingles, a shiver runs from his crown all the way down to the back of his neck. Almost makes him shudder, but the sensation passes quickly.
He spent a lot of time in Wakanda, healing his mind in more ways than one. Most of his paranoia disappeared over the course of his stay there, that nagging feeling that someone was watching him, chasing him. It's been coming back lately, and he figures it doesn't take a genius to guess why. You lose your shield, you feel less safe in the world.
He passes a hand over the back of his neck, inadvertently passing it through her. Eyes on his back. Eyes on him, watching where he goes. That feeling, that itch. It's gut-deep instinct, and it's driving him goddamn insane.
I'm losing my mind.
Pushes up off the couch rather abruptly passing clean through her body and heading for the cell phone charging on his small kitchen table. Leans his hips up against the counter as he unlocks it, and scrolls through the contacts until he finds Sam's name. Hovers there with his thumb over the call button, bringing himself up short. Stopping before he presses it. Has to shoot a glance at the clock on the far side of the wall, and it reminds him it's nearly three in the morning.
Really, Barnes? You that bad off?
No. No, he's not.
As it turns out, Sam's number is right above Steph's. Doesn't know too many people with an S name, and Shuri's listed as Princess Beyonce by her own request. He tabs down one and hovers over that one instead, mouth drawing up into a line.
Ah, buddy.
It's hard. It's real hard. ]

She knew choosing Peggy would mean having to let Bucky go. She just thought she could grab him back again, after.
Greed is a sin, and she's been a sinner her whole life.
She's slower to stand than he is, creaking up to her feet like she's an old lady again, although she's pretty sure her ghostly body decided to recreate exactly how she looked just after she stumbled out of Howard Stark's vita-ray machine, all the way down to the bouncing curls she'd needed so much help to set. After, when she first woke up in the future, she'd taken to just braiding it close to her scalp so it wouldn't get in the way, but during the War, or at least while she was still in the USO, she'd worn it loose and curling about her face. It was a real pain to deal with, but there was a part of her that was proud of it, and enjoyed being able to turn her head and feel it go swinging dramatically like a movie star's.
Presumably, she could just imagine it out of the way, but habit and instinct has her pushing it out of her face with her hands as she turns to follow Bucky into the kitchen, watching him as he messes around on his phone.
There's no point in staying silent, since it's not like he can hear her. ] You should go back to bed, Bucky. [ She wants to step in close and take his phone away, to take his hand in hers and lead him back to his bedroom so he can rest. There's no point in trying that, either. ] You need to sleep. It's not healthy, what you're doing.

The body and the brain, two different sides of a coin.
A thought drifts up unbidden, you need to sleep, hears it in her voice and everything. Chastising him like the moron he is. It's his imagination, but it's vivid as anything.
Stares down at Steph's name, and hits the call button. Just to see what'll happen. Maybe they've taken her phone. Maybe some mook in the government will pick it up and demand to know who's calling, tell him off for wasting the taxpayer's dime. Maybe it'll go straight to voicemail.
He's just curious. Just this, and then he'll go try to lay down again.
He can't call Sam, Sam's not gonna be awake. Just feels like he needs someone, even if it's a prerecorded message on a voicemail. ]

Frowning at him, she takes a step forward. ] Bucky...
[ Settling her hands on her hips so she doesn't reach out for him, she sighs again. ] Stop doing this, honey, you're just torturing yourself for no reason.
[ It's only after she's finished chiding him that she realizes she's not grown some other sort of ghostly sense: she really is hearing her own voice echoed back at her... from the speaker of his cell phone. ]
no subject
That ain't what he gets. He's got to pull the phone away from his ear and double-take at it, just to make sure he hasn't accidentally called someone else. Wanda, maybe, although she's never once called him honey. His brow furrows up, lips curling into something disgruntled.
Yeah, the name matches.
What the hell- ]
Didn't anyone ever teach you how to record a voicemail?
[ He mutters to himself, staring down at his phone and waiting for the rest of the message to play out so he can get to the beep at the end. Gotta be a mistake, maybe part of a conversation picked up while she was setting it. ]

Stepping in closer, she looks up into his face, her eyes wide. He heard her. Hell, she heard herself. Somehow, either through some weird technological glitch — she's no Luddite, but she's definitely not as tech-savy as her grandkids, so she has no idea how most of this works, honestly — or possibly magic, she can speak to him again and he can actually hear her. ]
Holy shit. [ Wow, great opening line, Rogers.
She shakes her head and shoves a hand through her hair again, then takes a deep breath. ] Bucky— God, Bucky, I'm so sorry. I'm so fucking sorry, I never meant... I didn't want to... [ She cuts herself off as her voice breaks, pressing her hand to her mouth for a moment before she wrenches herself back under control and tries again. ] Hey, pal.

She felt like she was drifting, moving in a sort of fog. They needed to do better with the recruits. She was just standing there, observing, when she saw it..so him.
The man-not fully human-he could see her. Captain Feanorian. She turned to face him, wondering if he could still see her. Had she been human, she would've read as shocked, but he would've felt more than saw the emotion she was giving off.]

He had a strain of the non-human in his genome, not much, but apparently enough to give him the Second Sight that those distant ancestors had had. He could see her, and he could feel a wave of emotion coming from her. His non-human antecedents had believed in spirits, and so this was not as great a shock to him as it might have been to another. But it was a shock all the same. ]
It's all right. I can see you. Are you all right?
[ Not that anybody who had recently died was really all right, but there were better and worse scenarios. The General had died to save others, and wasn't likely to regret that. ]

Cassie..
