Changed? Nothing changed. [That's her story and she's sticking to it. All that so-called friendship had been false. Unless 'friendship' is everyone going their separate ways, leaving each other to fight alone, using them just to have another soldier.]

This was the truth from the beginning.

[He still refuses to meet her gaze. Or even look at her at this point]

Ami. That can't be right. I've seen how they look at you. They love you.

[No; it's all fallen apart even more. Once she was sure they were breaking apart, she broke them the rest of the way herself.]

You knew about those battles. So you should realize quickly: what they wanted from the start was another soldier to defend their princess from punishment for her crimes. ['Their' princess, as if she never once looked up to Serenity in a distant past, or loved Tsukino Usagi.]

Crimes?

[Luke's voice is numb, and his right hand clenches, though with anger or worry he doesn't know]

[She's not eager for another round of 'Usagi-chan would never do that'; so she leads him to see it for himself.]

If you want to know it, ask that girl you know how the kingdom was destroyed in the past.

[Luke doesn't respond to that. He understands the implication well enough. And the snatch of emotion he gets from the other...tells him more. He cannot help but feel something that strong]

Why are you telling me this?

[waterfell]

[That's not the right question, Luke Skywalker. The right question is this:]

If you didn't want to hear the answer, why ask the questions?

Even if I don't want to, there are things that I need to know. If you're...a part of the woman I love, then it's something I have to ask.

[waterfell]

You keep saying 'love, love'. That has nothing to do with me.

[thefinaljedi]

Not you. Her. I'm beginning to be glad I know her, and not you as intimately as I do.

That doesn't mean there's nothing the same.

[waterfell]

[Really, she's just not interested in talk of 'love' at all.]

Even if there's something the same between us, that's meaningless. [As meaningless as any random similarity between herself and a total stranger. She is not that lonely pathetic girl any longer.]

Then tell me what changed? Why'd you fight your former allies? Why'd you turn so cold? What...tempted you that way?

Didn't I already answer you?

[And there's no more answer she'll give than the destruction of her world. She knows there's more to it, everything that came before she even learned about the past herself.]

I won't say it again: Don't ask a question you won't hear the answer to. I have no intention of wasting my time here.

I'll hear whatever you have to say. You're not her. You're a potential outcome of earlier events.

[He's having none of the nonsense, Ami. You are not better than her. Until you can prove it.]

[waterfell]

If she was worth the name of Mercury, she'd already have done the same as me.

Prove you're better then.

[His eyes met hers for the first time. Cold blue and filled with conviction.]

[waterfell]

There's nothing I need to prove to you. [That's part of the point of all of this: making her own way, no longer held back by the thought of others' reactions and responses.] I made the future I want.

[And if she does need any proof, she has all she needs right there: She won. She reminds herself of that a lot.]

Then show me why you think yourself better. If it's what you wanted, and it's better than hers, I'm willing to look and listen.

[waterfell]

I'm not interested in your opinion of it.

[Or more truthfully, she simply refuses to be led into sharing herself with anyone - particularly someone aligned with the senshi. Even her posture subtly shifts, not precisely hostile, but closed and drawn in.]

If she's content with her mistakes, let her be.

So be it. I'll find the answers myself.

[Luke stands back up, his posture not at all meek and worried anymore. She wasn't the same at all.

And finally, he opens himself to the Force and starts feeling out her emotions and some surface thoughts...]

[It's the worst kind of violation. If she knew he was doing it, she'd have preferred force lightning to this. And she'd be terrified furious. If she had any willingness for him to be privy to her thoughts or feelings, she'd have spoken them. Forcing it, even she knows, is wrong.

But the look she gives him halts at suspicious and wary. The words are enough to put her on alert. And without her bidding or knowledge, the surface of her thoughts start to shape themselves for Luke.

There's anger there, never far buried these days. There's suspicion of him and his motives, the reason for her cold answers. There's dislike of what she sees as fake kindness in order to pry. And there's the touch of darkness and hate.]

[For Luke, who's actively been suppressing this sense, feeling emotions comes as easily and naturally as sight and sound. He doesn't like what he feels from her, but it's not enough for him to warrant any sort of response. The hate and darkness are proof that she is exactly who he suspected she might be. He breaks the connection without a word, taking a more relaxed posture.]

I don't know how I ever confused you two.

[waterfell]

[Without understanding precisely what just happened, she treats it lightly herself, with a small toss of her head.]

So you finally wholly understand that? She and I have nothing to do with each other.

[thefinaljedi]

I do. I know you've let bitterness and hate rule your thoughts, and you never found the redemption she did. Ami's a lovely, beautiful girl with a bright future. You...could have had the same.

[waterfell]

I'm not looking for redemption. And I have the future I wanted. [She's gone too far, even if she was looking for it. And as for her future... What she has is better than deception, and loneliness betrayal.]
