You make me want to be...better, somehow.

| Atonement is, in your eyes, a Sisyphean task. You'll never be able to redeem yourself, no matter if what you did was against your will and only allowed you to survive in a cruel world. Who could understand what you've done or think you could be forgiven when it comes to all your friends? Certainly you never believed redemption, so far away already, could come in the form of a person...or a romantic relationship.

He and Loki had been on this trip for awhile now, driving no where in particular. The world was only beginning to recover from the last five years, but for the wandering pair it felt like the world no longer had any purpose or space for them. Thor had gone off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, leaving Loki to either live with a small Asgardian population that didn't particularly want him or move on himself, while Steve had decided to live his life on his own terms, leaving Bucky without his best friend and greatest advocate.
He doesn't resent Steve for what he did, but he it... stings, nonetheless.
Sam, of course, tried to offer him some help, but he declined. Sam was Captain America now. He couldn't be bothered to deal with someone like Bucky.
So, with their shared troubles, Bucky and Loki had met up and decided to just go. Leave. Drive away and see what life still might have in store for them. They'd gotten a lot closer on the way, though the former soldier feels uncertain about that, too. Getting too close to someone else seems like a bad idea. What can he really provide anyone of worth?
He sighs and changes the channel again.
"See anything interesting on the GPS?"

They switched off driving duty after that, and Bucky's at the wheel right now.
Loki is certainly an interesting road trip companion, aggressively upbeat in a way that suggests he's partly trying to shove his own feelings aside. He understands why Thor left, why he needed to leave, and he can't be but so upset about it. They have thousands of years ahead of them to heal and meet up again, and they've never actually excelled at supporting one another emotionally anyway. More the opposite. He's not sure what to tell Bucky about Rogers, except that he could tell the man was broken the first time he met him, when they fought in Germany. And humans have less time to heal themselves before they die.
He doesn't pity Barnes. Loki isn't good at pity in the first place, but he respects the man at this point, as well, and that breeds something better than pity, something warmer and sturdier, like a feeling of kinship. They fit together, at least for now, and frankly, the man is beautiful. Loki is a bundle of issues, placed neatly atop a powder keg of divine power, and it's still entirely possible he'll blow up in Bucky's face at some point--which is probably what Sam warned him--but if he does, it won't be deliberately.
"We've passed six Poke-stops and a gym under control of Team Mystic in the last twenty minutes," he reports. "But we're passing them too fast for me to actually spin the disc."
Oh, wait, did you mean the GPS that's not attached to Pokemon Go? His bad. He puts down his phone and taps the dashboard. "What's a Tastee Freeze? I wouldn't be averse to stopping for a bite."
