(ooc: hello i'm so sorry this is a million years late. if you're still interested in what we chatted about, here's a starter!)

Bare fingers follow the craggy path down his brow as he studies his own intently frowning face. Aesthetically, he finds the scars inoffensive, and as his contemplation draws on, it becomes more difficult to remember what his face looked like before his humiliating defeat on Starkiller. And yet he was lucky: Rey might have taken his nose or eye instead, might have left him as cleaved and misshapen as his Master –

Flinching away from that thought before it can rise to the surface, Kylo dismisses the could-have-beens and returns his attention to the reality looking back through the mirror’s reflection. He tips his head to one side, then the other; relaxes his expression into its typical apathy before scrunching it back into comically exaggerated frustration, observing himself from every angle as he tries to decide if he preferred the softer visage that had once stared back.

Did Rey like them? Did she enjoy knowing that he would always carry a visible reminder of her victory, or was she too noble for such a petty satisfaction?

It was as though his idle wonderings had summoned her at the most inopportune time. There was no warning before he felt a trembling in the energy around him, though he instantly recognized what it meant and felt a flash of embarrassment to have been caught in such a private moment of vanity. He could not see her through the mirror, but Rey appeared as real and solid as anything else in his quarters when he spun to face her. Breath catching, his bare hand falls to his side, and he shifts from one foot to the other before stiffening, then stilling.

They had not spoken since the strange, spectacular exchange of minds some hours ago, and he felt no surer what to say now than he had in that long, breathless silence before she had flickered away.
