[ there's something strange about this job. there's no question that one of the nobility is feasting upon the people of the nearby town, stealing away the young and draining them dry or turning them into thralls, but something is wrong other than that.

the town is small, and poor, and a whole group of them have come together in order to hire just one vampire hunter. just one, just one, just one. and that's d, as it stands, though he's relatively certain that this job will not net his usual pay rate.

he'll still do it, because he must, because he cannot let this stand, but it's frustrating, to an extent.

he's not thinking about any of that, right now.

the hold he's accosting is--underground, which is fine, and vast, which is also fine, but it's also... untouched.

it's clear the length of time that this place has been dormant is--there aren't any of the tells of a modern vampire, at least, and he doesn't know what to do with that. there are security measures, of course, and ones that would kill a lesser hunter, but the creature guarding the vampire's home is one he's never seen in person--one he's aware has been extinct since before he was even born.

a pity then, that his blade strikes true and takes it down as well. now they truly are extinct, but that's not his problem.

his problem is that someone here is getting set up, and from the looks of things it's at least in part him.

he stills by the coffin when he finally reaches it, tongue running along his teeth impatiently as he stares it down.

this is ridiculous.

for as old as it is, it's not a simple thing: there's a mechanism to open it, and while he's cognizant that this isn't the true quarry he seeks, he has to follow through now that he's here.

he takes a step back as the lid of the coffin slides away, hand on the grip of his sword. he doesn't pull it free yet, waiting to see if this creature is even still alive. ]

[Franciscus should have been the heir to the Erkens family, but that all ended with the scandal that occurred when he was found to have been secretly courting one of the local shopkeepers-not just a man, but not even a fellow noble, where they could probably figure something out. Arguments occurred, and in the end he was banished-all for the sake of a partner who ended up abandoning him when he left for the mountains.

As it is, he now makes his living both by collecting herbs, and occasionally selling the flowers he grows for his own enjoyment. He still has an eye for beauty that lets him arrange them in pleasing ways, though the place he goes to sell them doesn't always have customers who can pay high prices. Still, he usually makes enough to make it through winter.

He's always been fond of birds, and his one constant companion at home is a small parrot named Gerard. He won't begrudge hunters what they need to survive, but in cases where the traps don't kill right away and their victims manage to escape, he does on occasion do his best to offer them what healing they're willing to receive.

It's winter again, though the snow isn't yet heavy, so he's doing his best to find what herbs he can while they're still visible.]
