The one conceit of this meme: humans (or human-expies, whatever beings they may be) mate for life. With this comes the typical trappings of "mating for life" - indescribable closeness, contentment around your "destined," and, of course, in your all-too-familiar worst case, jealousy and rage should the bond be threatened.
Oh, and there's also the little caveat that, should your mate die, you die as well. But that's not too much to swallow, is it? The whole thing is only a small conceit, you know.

[Glenn's species is like this. They bite a gland at the nape of their mate's neck (and have theirs bitten in turn) in order to merge each other's scents and be permanently marked as each other's. Of course, one has to already be even partially of his species first. What's a little loss of humanity to be able to have nigh-tantric marathon sex with one's mate?
[Pros: really awesome immune system, ability to tolerate high temperatures, powerful body, high regeneration from harm, insane shapeshifting (even changing one's physical sex if desired) and tentacle abilities, animal attraction (you can be a Disney prince/ss!)
[Cons: cannibalistic urges (can be calmed by eating animal meat), average 5k+ daily calorie diet required, debilitating mating cycle every New Moon, animal attraction (it's because they want to mate with you, since those cells are communicable between species.)
