The Ghost Meme

Welcome to the meme where the dead meet the living. One of you is a breathing meatsack and the other is a wandering spirit, and for some reason fate has brought you together. Post your name/canon, then the RNG to pick a scenario or choose for yourself. You can write up multiple scenarios but please do not leave your comment blank. Blank comments will be damned to wander for eternity.

I. Dead
1. Poltergeist - The afterlife is for squares. You just want to rattle the cupboards and drop buckets of water on people...or something a bit more hazardous.
2. Forgetful Ghost - Dead? What are they talking about, of course you're still alive. Maybe walls aren't as solid as they used to be but you're still going about business as usual.
3. Vengeful Spirit - You've suffered, and you want to make sure everyone else knows your pain. Intimately. Go raise some hell.
4. Unfinished Business - There's something you still need to do and you can't move on until it's finished. Let's see if the living can help the dead.
5. Happily Dead - You don't have any anger management issues or leftover to-dos, you're just peacefully haunting your resting place. Being ghostly doesn't mean being rude.

II. Living
1. Ghosthunter - The ghost didn't come to you, you went to the ghost. Maybe you're there to banish it to the afterlife, maybe you're there to film it for a low-budget SciFi channel show. Hold the camera steady.
2. Psychic - You see dead people everywhere you go. It's a gift or a curse depending on how you look at it, but this is just an average day for you.
3. New Resident - Boy, this Victorian house/grubby apartment/abandoned insane asylum sure was a steal. There may be some slight problems with creaking floorboards and agonized screaming, but it's nothing a little DIY won't fix.
4. Ghost's Helper - For some reason this ghost really needs you. You're the descendent of its murderer, or the only one who can complete the ritual that will set it free.
5. Victim - You had nothing to do with this. The ghost just really hates your guts. Time to get an old priest and a young priest.

[Sherlock's fall actually did end with his death. But, he doesn't quite know it. I mean, it's hard to find oneself in the afterlife, when one has never believed in it. Now, he is doing what he can to protect those he left behind.]

1-4: The old Tempest Theater's been abandoned for years. Officially it closed due to lack of funds, but there's rumors that the theater has a darker past. At night lights can be seen at the windows, or faint music can be heard in the back alleyways.

The locals make 'Phantom of the Opera' jokes and try to pretend it doesn't bother them. No one wants to admit they've heard the sound of mournful singing leaking through the theater's boarded-up doors.

2-3: This old playhouse is finally starting to shine. Meister bought the place for a song (literally) and has set himself to restoring it to its former glory. The dressing room has been converted into a makeshift bedroom and kitchen, so that he can be that much closer to his art. It's been a hard day repairing the rotting boards of the stage and Meister's turning in for the night, huddled up under a pile of blankets.

There's noises, sure. But every old building makes noises.

Abe Sapien | Hellboy | 2-1

[Abe doesn't see the dead, exactly. He sees everything--the past of whatever he touches and the true nature of what's around him. As a member of the BPRD he's quite used to being sent out to banish evil spirits back from whence they came.

Though it would be nice, for once, if they could just sit down and have a splendid chat. Exorcisms were so draining.]

[At least the studio apartment is clean of the evidence of the murder that took place here. Local artist, found staked to the floor by his own paintbrushes over a mural of New York exploding, his head cut open and his brain missing.

[Said artist has been seen several times since. Tenants don't stay, claiming they hear a voice talking to them, cloudy white eyes peering from the shadows and blood bubbling up from the cracks on the floor.

Isaac thinks it's hilarious If he's going to suffer with not being able to move on, he's sure as hell not suffering alone.]

[Finally, after years upon years of the entire galaxy conspiring against him, HK-47 met his permanent end.]

Exclamation: Oh no!

[Or at least he would have, had good sense prevailed. But instead, he is now a ghost. Rather than ponder the impossibility of his state of being, HK has decided to take advantage of his new-found semi-incoporeal form. Being dead doesn't have to be dull.]

Help!

[And now a metal-edged voice is coming from a darkened room. There is a rifle pointed at the entrance attached to a tripwire strung across the doorway. And proximity mines in the corners of the room. Now, to lure in an unsuspecting, chivalrous meatbag. Or any meatbag, so long as he can watch them explode.]

[This is why Abe goes in first. With one hand pressed to the wall he can map out the span of the room and detect where someone--something--has made unfortunate alterations.

Help, indeed. He takes out a small packet from his belt, a few candy bars wrapped in paper and throws it into the room ahead of him. Let's see how smart it was.]

[That last ghost hunt didn't turn out so well for him. Haunted houses tended to be rickety and old, and one wrong step...

He wasn't aware that anything had happened--he remembered blacking out and waking up alone in an empty house. Where was his sister? Keroro and the rest of his alien buds? Despite a splintering headache, he's determined to find them and the ghost he went in search for in the first place. So he searches the house over and over and over again...

He hopes he can make it back home in time for dinner or else he'll be scolded.]

Spencer Reid | Criminal Minds | 4

Spencer Reid has never broken.

It was forty-eight straight hours of torture. All kinds of it. And the entire time, the worst part was that he didn't know if he would live or die.

And now he knows.

Looking down at his mangled, stabbed corpse is a jarring experience, but he swallows his panic. He watches as the unsub rises from the floor, wiping the knife off on his pants. The unsub is going to go after the rest of his team. He doesn't know who the unsub has a grudge against, but Spencer was only the beginning--they are all going to die.

They are all going to go through what he went through.

Reid looks down at his hands, flexing them, getting used to seeing himself as semitransparent. Don't panic. Don't panic. There are stories out there of ghosts contacting the living, right? So he has to be creative. Find a way to warn the people he loves before they're caught. Make sure they don't blame themselves, because he knows they will.

He passes through the walls (wow that feels weird), finding himself on the sidewalk of a perfectly normal-looking suburb. He squints against the light of the sun, one part of him wanting to stare up at it forever and the other part making him pay attention.

Reid starts to jog down the road, looking for a street sign, and then the jog turns into a run, because he finds that he's not getting tired. If he has to, he will run all the way to Quantico. He has a time limit.]

II.1.

[Well, "ghosthunter" isn't a term she would like to use. But due to personal interest, it's a hobby of hers to always be on the hunt for the supernatural.

Of course, sometimes it really is a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

The hazy figure drifting down this lazy street, most would be able to write off as an optical illusion. Maybe a bit of fog. But she knows better. And her eyes see more clearly than most.

She squints at the ghost for a minute or two, then slips a polaroid camera out of her purse and tries taking a picture. Maybe it'll show up better in a still image.]

[Kain is stubborn enough to keep going, even when he rightfully shouldn't be. So, while word of his death has gotten around to others, he himself has no idea. There's a Reason why he's still around, of course, but that will only come whenever he finds out the truth.]

[For now, he's on the search for his weapon, annoyed that he seems to have lost it. He's so focused on this that steps through a wall... right into an occupied room.]

[There's something unsettling in the air, and Kain can't quite place why he's having this feeling. He goes about his usual routine of training, jumping at the mountain's local monsters, stabbing them down with ease. But still the feeling persists, as if someone were watching him out here...]

[ Annette had been kidnapped, taken away to the newly revived Castlevania. She really wasn't sure how she'd done it, but she'd managed to escape and return home. There was a problem, though... one she didn't realize.

She hadn't escaped, she'd been killed.

Either way, the clueless woman had returned back to the home she shared with Richter, awaiting his return. He would return, wouldn't he? ]

Alive: 2&3

[ Annette was pleased with the new home they had purchased. Well, she had been, at least, to begin with. It was large, had lots of space; it would be the perfect place to begin starting a family in. Except something felt... off. It was far too cold, she swore she heard voices, and she KNEW she'd seen someone walking upstairs and into the attic... if only she could get someone to believe her. ]

[ The thing about dying as a teenager is all that pent up angst? Sticks around. Jacob's always been about self-improvement, okay, sure, but he was sixteen freaking years old when a vampire went and broke his spine and ripped out his throat. Excuse him if he's going to get his jollies now.

The forest surrounding La Push gets it's fair share of hikers and young people looking for a place to party. It's almost a favor when he chases them off to the safety of home, really, considering the same things that killed him have been known to use these hunting grounds. Not that he's expecting any Lost Spirit of the Year awards, considering he's more likely to break off a couple of low hanging branches and fling them than consider a friendly dialogue. ]

II-1/5
[ Dead things suck, and that isn't even a pun this time around. Ghosts mostly just hover around and be ominous rather than drink the blood of innocents, but sometimes there's a special brand of crazy that travels right over into the afterlife.

It doesn't help that he's completely new at this aspect of the supernatural. His specialty runs closer to the rip-it-open-with-my-claws aspect of negotiation and research, and that works just as well as you'd expect with a non-corporeal entity. ]

[It was probably only a matter of time before the job caught up to him. Unfortunately the last few days of his life are kind of a haze, and he doesn't remember actually dying. So for now he's just floating around, confused, uncertain why he can't seem to get back home.]

II.4.

[Just another routine case, they said. Except this time the victim didn't quite stay still and silent, gone. But it's his job to catch the killers, either way - so he might as well talk to them and use what information they can give from the other side.]

I.2 and II.2?

[Being a powerful witch led to Willow seeing all sorts of things that no one else did. There was so much weirdness in her life that it'd taken her a while to realize that she could see departed spirits, too, and not just the ones that were manifesting and causing trouble. She could see all of them; like seeing auras, it was a hazy figure in the corner of her eye. But it doesn't actually happen all that often, so when she sees one while snooping around Washington, D.C. as part of her regular post-Sunnydale demon hunting, she's curious.

Maybe it-- he, she realizes-- was killed by the thing she's looking for? No way to know unless she asks. Willow feels badly for ghosts on principle, so when she approaches him, she's quiet and sympathetic.]

Excuse me? [Best to just be polite.] My name's Willow. Do you think you could help me out for a second?

[ For such a nice apartment, it's proven awfully hard to keep tenants. No one says so to the landlord, of course, but rumour has it that the place is haunted. No one has any solid evidence, and the neighbours claim they've never seen or heard anything, but the few people who have lived there since the sudden death of the somewhat well-known musician who used to inhabit it have reason to believe that the rumours are true. They've felt chills, heard voices and distant singing, and felt ostensibly unwelcome in the place.

[ Of course, the landlord has had to start filtering apartment viewings to make sure they're not just kids or shitty ghost hunters looking to chase a rumour, but the place is still for rent. For now, it just sits; dark, vacant, and cold. ]

Luke Triton | Professor Layton | 1-5ish

[It's a pity that Luke died so young. After bouts of dizziness, he continued to grow ill, until only a little after his fourteenth birthday when he finally passed on.

He wasn't unhappy exactly, although he wondered if this was all there was to it. No one to talk to, no one who could see him. It was a pretty lonely existence, and even though he couldn't move on, he had to watch the people close to him grow old and die.

For now though, he's wandering aimlessly through houses. Because who knows? Maybe he'd be able to find someone to interact with.]

2 - 1

[even after all these years, Ray would like to think that he's blessed. sad as it is, not many people can say that they're happy with what they do. sure, there have been ups and downs (and when things go down, hoo boy, they plummet), but what job doesn't have those? at the end of the day, he's happy with what he does. hell, he'd even go so far as to say this is what he was meant to do with himself all along. sometimes fate doesn't have to be all gloom and doom and murderous prophecies.

but, every so often, he'll get a nasty assignment, something that sets itself apart from all the icky work he's usually used to. poltergeists are unpleasant, but manageable. demons are on a scale above that. this -

well. this is one of those rare instances where the entity actually hits a chord with him.

according to the family, the boy's spirit was spotted in the playroom by their eight year-old son. clearly it - no, he - wasn't causing any trouble if even the kid wasn't spooked by seeing him, but Ray can understand how...concerning it might be for some older folks when their son's only friend is transparent and hovers two feet above the ground. that's a little worrying.

closing the door, he kneels on the ground and goes to work. he has his proton pack with him, but surprisingly it's not the first thing his hand goes to. rather, he reaches into the pocket of his coveralls and produces a white piece of chalk which he then uses to draw a large, intricate sigil on the hardwood floor. he's been reading up on sealing spells lately, and if his research is correct, this one should contain the ghost to this room as soon as it makes its presence known. it'll make it easier to manage.

as he waits, he occupies himself by studying the child's bookcase, looking surprisingly invested as he reads the titles from the spines.]

Phoenix Wright | Ace Attorney | 1.4

[It had been a freak accident that had so suddenly taken Phoenix's life--he, on his bicycle, had been struck by a car that sped through a red light--and all in the middle of investigating a trial, no less.

Now, he's haunting everyone he can remember from life, and plenty of people he can't, too. He just needs to find someone who can help him be sure his friends (and that trial) are all well taken care of.]
