'Cause sometimes you just can’t save yourself.

1. BAD DATE - You get a text, a phone call, or maybe you can just see the other person floundering on what clearly must be the worst date of their life. Time to step in and save the day.

2. PRISON - Maybe they've been wrongly convicted, or maybe you're an accomplice. Either way, it's jailbreak time. Maybe the guards will fall for the old 'wounded prisoner' technique.

3. TAKEN HOSTAGE - They're being held at gunpoint, either for money or for fun. Maybe you can talk down their captors — or maybe you are a captor, secretly working to help them.

4. UNWELL - Your body is damaged, your suffering taken its toll. You can't save yourself anymore. You're wounded, you're starving, maybe even dying. Someone, help!

5. YOURSELF - One bad choice after another, your self-destructive tendencies are going to get the best of you unless someone steps in to save the day.

6. BIG DAMN RESCUE - You're hovering over an active volcano, a pit of sharks, about to fall off a cliff. Whatever it is, you've only got precious seconds of life left.

7. LONELINESS - You've been secluded, locked away, and the emptiness is overwhelming. You need company, or you might just drown.

8. UNWANTED SOCIAL FUNCTION - A family reunion, your three o'clock board meeting, whatever it is, you desperately don't want to go. Hopefully your good buddy can come up with a distraction.

9. BAD ROMANCE - You're trapped in a relationship that's headed south. Maybe it's an arranged marriage, or maybe it's just someone who won't take no for an answer. You need a helping hand, maybe even a Prince(ss) Charming.

10. WILDCARD - Any kind of rescue will do! Spread your creative wings and go for it.

Carol can appreciate the gesture...but also she doesn't need anyone to fight her own battles. She nearly stays in the room just because she's a little annoyed by the way he did it.

But the last thing that any of them need are rifts or grudges. So let the rest of them hash it out. Rhodey knows that she'll be happy to help with anything they really need.

She follows Bucky out, though her arms are crossed over her chest. "Well, that was effective. I'll give you that."

Her body language is easy enough to read, and he can tell she's not entirely happy with his approach. He shrugs a little once they're far enough away. "I know what it's like," he offers as an explanation. "To need some space from other people deciding things for you. Thought it might give you some breathing room, at least."

"It did. But for the future, I can take care of myself." She relaxes her posture, though. At least they weren't arguing over whether to lock her up like Bucky had experienced. (It had been a long five years and Steve and Nat caught her up on what she had missed Avengers-wise.)

"Do you prefer being called Bucky? That's always what Steve called you, but I figured I better ask."

Bucky laughs at that. "Never doubted that you could for a second, but remember Steve Rogers is my best friend. He's pretty capable too, but still needs a hand every now and then. And Bucky's fine. Nobody's called me James in a long time." A very, very long time. He tries not to think too much about Steve's adventures in time travel.

"Well that's true. I like Steve a lot, but he doesn't - didn't - know when to be a little selfish." He's more than earned his happily ever after.

Carol steps forward to lean against the railing of the balcony. With the compound completely destroyed, they're making their arrangements in a government building in New York City. The former Avengers tower is in their sight line. The new owners haven't changed the letters yet.

"So have you thought about what you want to do?"

Bucky gives her a warm smile for that. "No, he didn't. I think he finally figured that out." And he's happy for him, he truly is. Even if it means he'll be without his friend.

He turns his thoughts away from that, considering her question.

"I hadn't, really. The world is a different place than it was before all this. I wasn't even sure where I fit back then, much less now. Wakanda has no need for me, and I'm not sure the Avengers really want my help."

Steve was a good friend over the past five years and she's going to miss that friendship. If he's still reachable hopefully he won't mind a comm every now and then.

"What about Sam? I think he's going to need some help."

[fridging]

Bucky raises an eyebrow at that. "I'm pretty sure Sam is not exactly my biggest fan. I mean, I don't think he hates me, but I'm not sure he trusts me, either." Not that he blames him. Or any of them, really. He didn't even blame Tony for how he felt about him. "My mind is my own again, I'm sure of that now, but I did a lot of damage when it wasn't."

Carol gives him a shrug. "Maybe. But you both lost your best friend. He probably gets better than anyone how you feel about that. And now he's got to shoulder that legacy. I feel like figuring out a legacy and figuring out how to balance everything you've done is complimentary."

[fridging]

Bucky nods thoughtfully. "Maybe you're right. But still...he has to want it, too. And maybe having me around would be too much of a reminder of what he's lost. Or a reminder that he isn't the original Captain America. Or you know, a reminder that I tried to kill him a few times."

He could ask Sam how he feels about all of that, but he's a little scared of what his answers will be. Not that he would ever admit to being afraid of anything.

"You could ask him." Not that she's an expert on feelings. It's always been easier for her to punch than advise. The answer seems simple to her, but he's right that she doesn't really understand all the nuances of their relationship.
