That's something you should be commended for. Not many would be able to show such resolve. In addition to keeping away from sexual contact, though, you must also shy away from emotional intimacy - so, romance. That may seem easy at first, as all you really need in life is your determination, but what happens when you find the one after you've already swore you'd never pursue them?

[That's...saying the absolute least, really. There were so many times he thought he'd die buried under a pile of animated corpses and each time, it was Brienne that shook them off him.]

Frankly, I can't believe we're here.

[ On her part, Brienne couldn't say she believed it either. To say they were outnumbered would be an absolute joke.

She bit her lip before straightening her back and looked at Jaime, there was something she meant to say. ]

You saved me, more than once. I am not sure how we would have fared if you hadn't stood in line with us.

[Jaime shook his head automatically. It was nothing. It was survival; they were soldiers.]

You also saved me multiple times. The least I could do was have your back. I wouldn't have been out there with you in the first place if you hadn't vouched for me.

I couldn't just let you make a fool of yourself in front of the Dragon Queen, it was too embarrassing to watch.

[ she smiled very faintly, somehow she still had it in her after what they had gone through just hours before. maybe it was just the thrill of having being alive when all the odds were against them.]

Ah, well. That was inevitable, I'm afraid. After everything.

[It was, all things considered, kind of funny. Maybe especially because of what they'd just come out of. That Jaime stood in front of Daenerys Targaryen and didn't get automatically fed to one of her dragons was a strange and funny thing.]

I had no idea you'd have such sway over the northerners. Lucky me. I think my days of being implicitly trusted by those with more power than me are long over.

It was Lady Sansa's doing. You should remember that.

[ She owed Jaime that much, at the very least. After all they'd gone through together.

Then again, thinking about Jaime running his mouth about how he would do it all over again. It was hard to watch. ]

They've been over, I can tell that much... so don't push your luck. I can't guarantee the Dragon Queen isn't thinking about killing you as soon as the dust has settled.

[Lady Sansa also had plenty of reason to want him dead, as did Jon Snow. Whatever they thought of him personally aside, he knew he couldn't help also being a symbol of Cersei to everyone he came into contact with.

He had done horrible things for Cersei and for his children. He couldn't be sorry about it, even at the cost of his life.]

That wouldn't surprise me. Between her and Cersei, my odds of making it out of this war are abysmal. All the more reason to be grateful for your risking your name for the time and service I have left. I won't let you down.

[ Brienne looked to the side. Had he really come all this way, fought alongside her against the undead and survived, just to die at the hands of either side?

His odds weren't good that much was true, but whose were at this point? They were all headed for war. ]

What will you do once we reach King's Landing? Are you ready to fight your own people?

My people?

[Jaime laughed a little at that, mirthlessly. He couldn't claim them anymore, and they wouldn't claim him either.]

I've walked away from my sister, and Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella are dead. I have no people left at King's Landing. To be honest, I think Cersei might kill me all the faster if I were to try to return.

[He's not sure how true that is...he'd like to believe better of her, but if her blindness to the threat of the White Walkers taught him anything, it was that nothing came before power for her. Not even common sense.]

I think my only people might be here, actually. Tyrion for one. And...well, you, if I can be so bold as to consider you such.

[ Brienne bowed her head slightly, thinking about the children he had lost, Still, knowing what Cersei could be capable of doing gave her no reason to doubt that she would do something like that to her own brother.

Her lover.

Brianne visibly grew stiff at Jaime's words, looking away. ]

You can be bold, I don't have doubts about vouching for you.

Then, I've got you and Tyrion here. So...I don't know how I could fight for anyone else.

[If Brienne was embarrassed to hear such a thing, Jaime was doubly embarrassed to say it. But it was the truth. He'd never been able to turn against Tyrion, no matter how much Cersei tried to force him.

And Brienne was...

Well, she was counting on him to honor her word, wasn't she?]

[ Brienne looked up to Jaime, unsure on how to respond to that. ]

For what is worth, I am sorry about your children.

[ Even if Joffrey had done unspeakable things to the Lady Sansa and many others. She couldn't imagine the pain of losing a child, much less three of them. ]

[Jaime didn't allow himself to dwell on what he'd lost often, but Brienne had a tendency to bring out his weak points in the quiet moments.]

It's worth a lot, actually. I know what you must think of Joffrey...but you would have liked Myrcella and Tommen.

[ Brienne hadn't known them, but she knew of their fates. Both of their deaths had been cruel, it made her feel sick.

She did hate Joffrey, but his death had been public and had no dignity to it. She found comfort in it, it was what he deserved.

But Jaime's other children, as far as she was concerned, were innocent. ]

I believe you.

[ It was strange to think of Jaime as a parent, but it's not like he'd had the chance to be one. ]

You did the right thing coming here.

[It's weird, being openly acknowledged as the father of Cersei's children by anyone but Cersei. It was so important to keep it secret for so long, and in the end...everyone seemed to acknowledge it all at once.

He wasn't sorry about fathering his children. He wasn't sorry about having loved Cersei either. But he could imagine what decent people like Brienne thought of him.

It meant all the more that she believed in him.]

I know. It was wrong of my sister to sit idle and do nothing.

I can't say it surprises me. Look at how we ended up. [ There were many things wrong with Cersei, Brienne agreed.

But more than that, Brianne was sure Cersei was out for his head now that he had defected. And with their army now decimated, they exposed and vulnerable. She would have to keep her eyes open. ]

But you watched my back. I'll make sure to have yours when the time comes.

Yes, well. This is the better outcome for her. If we'd succumbed, we'd all be marching down there now along with all the other wights. She was willing to risk that.

[It was nothing short of madness. Cersei would rather have her crown pried out of her undead fingers before she would give an inch of her power to those she saw as enemies. Jaime felt sure even their father would have seen it from Jaime's perspective.

Now they were at a disadvantage. But whatever the next outcome, at least Westeros would not become a continent populated entirely by wights.]

Thank you. That is comforting, no matter how hilariously short our chances may be.

It would be laughable to have survived this to just die in King's Landing.

[ She didn't think it funny at all, she was ready to die just hours ago sitting next to the fire.

And then Jaime had knighted her. He'd given her what she never thought she could have.

Jaime raised his eyebrows at her next statement. His vows? She'd been meaning to ask?]

[ Brienne knew her timing wasn't the best, but they were to march to King's Landing any time now. She might not ever get to know.

She looked aside and sighed before she kept on. ]

Being Kingsguard means to be chaste, doesn't it?

[That, he didn't expect. He laughed--what sort of answer did she expect from him for that?]

That is one of the expectations, yes. No wives, no children. Of course, expectations versus reality...

[He shrugged helplessly.]

[ She was embarrassed to have asked, really.

Not that she would have to take any vows like those, she was barely a knight.

Don't be embarrassed, I know what you're thinking. But if you take a close look, there are plenty of loopholes. I mean, I never did take a wife and another man claimed my children.

[He'd made all sorts of excuses to himself in his head back when it mattered. They were as empty now as they were then, but he'd been too cocky to care back then.]

[Of course, honorable Brienne couldn't understand making a promise she couldn't keep. It really was a miracle she'd survived this long.]

Well, I couldn't exactly use "I'm in a relationship with my twin sister" as an excuse, now could I? Not that there was any refusing a designation from the Mad King. When Robert took the crown, being Kingsguard kept me close to my sister, and subsequently our children and...well, there were many reasons to remain aside from honor.

No, I suppose not.

[ Brienne shook her head, she knew it was stupid to think that way. There was no room for honor when family was on the line, she supposed.

But now that hardly mattered, he'd lost them all.

She couldn't wrap her head around it, living a lie for so long. ]

No, not a gift, that's not right. You don't have to earn a gift and you've more than earned being a knight.

[Though, he supposed it was a gift if you looked at it in a certain light. Brienne really was meant for it, though; Jaime's part in making it official felt trivial when compared to how deeply she deserved the title.]

More than anything, I wanted to express...er...the depth of my admiration for you. As a warrior and as a woman. I think...I've really cheapened the worth of my word over the years. But my actions always spoke to what I've felt and believed in, so...

[He gestured vaguely, perhaps a bit flustered. It would be good if he knew how to say what he wanted to say.]

Does any of this make sense or am I just rambling?

[ Brienne watched carefully as he went on, raising her brows, her face felt warmer in spite of the bitter cold air.

She didn't know what to say, she believed in her skills because she had dedicated her life to honing her abilities. And regardless of what others thought of Jaime now, she felt like she understood him better than most.

She could feel her chest tightening at Jaime's words. But she managed to keep her a straight face through it all. ]

It makes sense, for someone like you.

Yes, well.

[He couldn't. Not really. He couldn't even find the words for what he was thinking and feeling right now. He'd never been good for delicate words--he was no Tyrion.]

Honestly, I was fairly certain I wouldn't be here today. So...what I said didn't matter as much as what I did.

[ She wasn't sure what was worse, her annoyance at Jaime's inability to speak clearly OR that she had mostly just thought that he'd done it because she deserved it.

Both were wrong. But he was to blame for it. ]
