Often times we are left without resolution or closure. Or we find ourselves wishing we could speak with those who are no longer with us just to relay news or seek advice. Death steals from us not just a person, but the opportunity to share with that person the rest of our lives. And maybe that's the most difficult thing of it all. But whether it be through the supernatural, some freak science accident, magic, or some other force beyond our knowledge, you now have a chance to spend a moment with someone who has been long lost. Have a conversation. Yell at them how unfair them leaving was. Cry, hug-- whatever you need to do before this door closes again. Looks like Peter's about to find out.

It's a misty void, at first, waiting for something specific to fill it. What that something is, it's impossible to tell, but the mist swirls, slowly clearing - and is that a flash of red and blue?

Peter has his mask pulled up over his mouth, resting on the bridge of his nose. He doesn't have any of the fancy bells and whistles other!Peter has, just hand-sewn spandex from the nearest Hobby Lobby, but he likes the think he wears it well. The mist dissipates, revealing that Peter has his legs kicked up on a chair, limbs coiled awkwardly in the chair he's actually sprawled in.]

Congrats, kid. You just got blasted to the Shadow Realm.

[Stare into the flames of a fire long enough and things start to look back at you. Mostly, it's just illusions, the mind playing tricks on the eyes. But for followers of the Lord of Light, there was power in the flames. You could see things like what the future held. Or in this case, let the dead cross over from whatever place they were in to communicate with the living.

Beric had already been powered by the flames for a long time now. He was the opposite of what the Night King raised: instead of an ice wight, he was a fire wight, albeit one with more agency then the usual undead being. His fire might have been put out for good now, but he'd died in the middle of battle, and so the question burned on inside of him. Had they won or had Death prevailed? As the flames flicker, it's easy to make out a face there, one familiar with an eyepatch over the right eye.]

Grantaire isn't here. He knows Grantaire isn't here. He knows that no amount of wishing will change anything, and that no amount of stubbornness will bend the universe back to the way it used to be.

But when everything hurts, when the world starts to crush down so heavy that what's left of his heart is threatening to crack, exhaustion inevitably pushes him in the same direction.

"I can't." His oldest friend isn't actually sprawled out on his bed while he paces the room, but talking to the space where Grantaire used to be is still easier than talking to himself. "I can't-- do this."

And a lifetime ago, there would have been a soft noise almost like a laugh and a warm voice full of certainty filling the little space. A lifetime ago, it would have helped just to hear that yes, the world had never been crueler, but it had never stopped them before. A lifetime ago, if he'd collapsed onto the edge of his own bed, a familiar hand would have found his shoulders and a protective warmth would have settled into his chest.

But Grantaire isn't here, and the bed Horatio crumples to sit on is empty, and the attic has never felt like a colder or lonelier place.

Natasha moves slowly these day, each motion taking a life time to finish. It's strange, because distance disappears in the blink of an eye. A thought crosses her mind, a flash of a familiar face, and there she is. But, once the distance has gone, and she's in the Here-Now rather than the fuzzy, gold-edged glimmer of nowhere, her motions slow, like trying to move through molasses, weights tied to her wrists and ankles.

Did they ever do that to her? Natasha can't help but wonder. In the Red Room. Before she was better. Before she was her. Memories are hard to hold onto, flickering away each time she reaches for them. The slowness feels familiar. Sunlight glittering on the surface of water, pressure pushing down on her chest, her limbs slow and sluggish, trailing weights, ropes digging into her bare wrists, scrubbing the skin open... She's there, for a second, at the bottom of the practice pool, her lungs aching for the lack of breath and open eyes stinging with chlorine.

A blink of an eye, and she's back to the nowhere golden glow. She doesn't have limbs there. Not slow or fast.

Is this real? Was the pool? She has no way of telling anymore. If time passes, she can't tell. There's a sense of loss she can't quite shake. If she had a body here, she knows exactly where she would feel it, like a solid lump sitting just beneath her breastbone. But she has no body, no chest, no lump. Just a sense that there is something she's missing.

Every attempt to grasp whatever she is missing, whatever brought her out of the present to this non-space, always ends the same way. Faces flickering through her thoughts like the reel of an old-fashioned film, each image projected onto her and through her until all distance blurs and suddenly she is there, in the present, time weighing so heavily on her she cannot move. She's lost count of how many times she's been in the presence of someone achingly familiar, watched them go about their day in normal time while she moved in slow-motion towards them. Her mouth taking a hundred years to open and distance blurring away before she has a chance to speak.

Their names pound on her heart when she stands unseen and unheard in their present. Fury. Hill. Barton. Rogers. Rhodey. Banner (his presence stings for reasons she can no longer remember). Barton again. Lila. Coop. Nate. Laura. Barton. Barton. Barton.

But then she's back, suffused by that same golden glow and the names slip away again. There's only the flicker of faces and memories. Distance blurring and time slowing. Over and over again. Like she's a broken strip of film, taped back together, and run through the projector only to break again. There's no way to tell if the pieces are being put back in order.

What is order?

What comes first? The thick smoke of the hospital? Her left arm cuffed to a bed every night? Learning how to brace a rifle against her shoulder to absorb the recoil without breaking bones? The pool? Metal fingers against her elbow, correcting her stance?

It all flows together.

Without a body, she feels the chill of metal in winter against her skin, and the ghost of a shudder courses through what passes for her these days. His face flickers through her mind, and she's there.

The apartment is-- the word threadbare is the only one that comes to mind. The walls are empty, the paint peeling, the floorboards creak beneath her despite her lack of weight. The place seems empty, no furniture to speak of, fraying curtains held up by thumbtacks flickering in the breeze of an open window. Outside there are the sounds of a city, the voices mingling together with the hum of engines so Natasha can't quite tell which language they're speaking. She used to speak many languages, but now her mouth seems ill-suited for any tongue.

Slowly, Natasha turns her head, tries to find the owner of the face that brought her here. Never before has the sudden flicker of speed brought her somewhere empty.

The path to Kharon's Ferry is long and treacherous, and winds for many miles through the Netherrealm. A direct portal to the shore is impossible - the Stygian energies around the Sea of Blood would leak through to Earthrealm. The best point of entry is on the furthest edge of Elysium - merged with the Netherrealm long ago, it houses the undamned souls not yet pure enough for the heavens.

Commander Cage enters first, flanked by Jacqui. She closes her eyes and exhales, deeply. She doesn't like coming back here. Not so soon after...well. But they have no choice.
