SLAVES

1. The Newbie - This is your very first auction and you don't quite know what to expect. Hopefully you remember your training and don't disgrace yourself in front of your new master. Hopefully someone thinks you're worth buying at all.

2. The Oldtimer - You've been bought and sold and bought again so many times. You've seen it all before and don't think this time is going to be much different. In fact, the only real anxiety you've got is whether or not someone's going to pay for a more than slightly used slave.

3. The Pet - You're a pleasure slave. A bed warmer. A decorative piece of artwork. You're meant to look pretty and be pleasing and not much else.

4. The Guard - Your master hired you because of your ability to swing a sword or shoot a gun, not your looks.

5. The Escape Artist - Somehow you always manage to squirm out of your master's chains. Too bad you seem to get caught after a while. Maybe your next daring escape will be permanent. Then again, maybe your next master has special ways of keeping you locked up.

6. The Undercover - You aren't a slave at all, you're just pretending to be one. Why? Well that's up to you. Either way, your cover is blown if you don't act the part.

7. The Specialist - You have a skill that no one else has. Something rare and valuable. Something your master needs more than anything else.

MASTERS

1. The Customer - You've owned slaves before and this trip to the market is nothing new to you. Still, you're hoping to find something worth your while.

2. The Gift - Someone bought a pet for you, isn't that nice of them? Or maybe it isn't so nice. Did you even want a slave in the first place? Well you're stuck with one now.

3. The Giver - You're selecting a slave for someone else, and they need to be perfect. Perhaps you'd better test them out first to make sure you're getting your money's worth.

4. The Trainer - You specialize in taming unruly slaves and making them over into perfect, obedient, well-trained pets.

5. The Rebel - You hate the idea of slavery, but the system isn't going to go away any time soon, so the next best thing is to buy up any slave you can get your hands on and free them, right?

6. The Companion - You want someone to be with you always, someone you can talk to and depend on, someone who will never leave your side. It's a good thing that money can buy that these days.

7. The Undercover - You're not actually a Master. You're at the auction for an entirely different reason. Maybe it's special policework, maybe you're trying to hunt down a certain someone. Either way, your cover is blown unless you act the part.

[ The last time Noctis visited Gralea, he was a child, maybe three years old. He barely remembers it, wonders how much his memory was from pictures or stories instead of real. It was too hot, he remembers that, but they stayed somewhere high-up, with a balcony and a cool breeze. The city was beautiful, even if it wasn't Insomnia. The food was good, fresh fruits and spicy curries. He didn't understand the politics, then. He liked it. His dad was short with him in a way he never was at home, but he had fun.

Now, seventeen years later, it's nothing like then. He's underground, shiver with cold, lips chapped from refusing food too often, wrists raw from being shackled for so long. He's exhausted, but at least that's nothing new.

He's worn out, too tired to fight, but the anger still burns low in his empty gut. His dad sold him to a foreign nation, and a foreign emperor, and for what? To save the last city in Lucis, when it was only a matter of time before the wall falls and it's conquered anyway? That's what his son's life is worth, a couple months extra time? Noctis isn't sure who he hates more, his father, the gross old man who agreed to taking a guy a quarter of his age for a bed slave, or everyone in Insomnia who went along with it, who let this happen. He hates everybody.

...Well. Almost everybody. The cell door creaks open and Noctis lifts his head, lets it drop back to the wall because he's too weak to hold it up on his own anymore. It's not fair that the one person who seems to care about him is the enemy. Noctis's life really is the worst. ]

[ It had seemed that the investigation into an underground slave ring (merely the most egregious crime on the laundry list of depravities this syndicate was responsible for) had not gone quite according to plan-- or perhaps the plan was adapted on the fly. Be that as it may, the result regardless was one Sherlock Holmes playing the slave rather than the detective, and leaving one very agitated and long-suffering doctor Watson at his wits end on how to spring the erstwhile fellow safely. The doctor's own face was, sadly, known to the thugs, and Watson was simply not about to let Mary waltz into such a dangerous den of depravity.

How fortunate then, that the good doctor did in fact know a certain person who was aptly suited to the task, both able to play the part and thrown down if needed.

Playing the bored socialite with extremely dubious morals and plenty of money to burn, Irene Adler saunters into the lair of the slave traders, an underground bunker of some sort with labyrinthine corridors going this way and that, bedecked in jade silks and lace, a fine hat with nodding plumes pinned jauntily atop her curls. She plays her part flawlessly and soon has the overseer of the place eating out of the palm of her gloved hand, taken to see the "merchandise" that might suit her needs for herself. It is a nauseating thing, to see all those people kept in chains and cages like cattle-- some are to Irene's eye thugs and criminals that might deserve their fate, but most look to be complete innocents. It will be a pleasure to shut this endeavor down.

But first, she needs to get Sherlock (along with whatever evidence and information he's no doubt gathered) out of here. The overseer is not the brightest man alive, and it does not take much effort on Irene's part to plant certain suggestions and subtle hints that have him taking her straight to Sherlock. He's kept in isolation, in a room of his own; apparently he is "difficult", the overseer warns Irene. Suppressing a laugh, she smirks devilishly and tells the man that's exactly the sort of amusement she's on the market for.

Unbolting the door, the overseer forges into the dim room -- cell, really -- and tumbles the bedraggled, handcuffed detective roughly onto the floor, right at Irene's stylishly booted feet. Biting back a wince at the rough treatment, Irene continues to play her part and smiles down at Sherlock, wide and delighted and rather smug. ]

Oh, yes. I quite like the look of this one.
