The vast grounds of Melbourne's home, Brocket Hall, had numerous underground tunnels that had been build during the war. Nobody knew the real extent of them, a fact that had now caused him and Mr. Bond to fall through an apparently poorly constructed floor in the basement of the main building. Ironic really since he had invited Bond over to discuss new safety measures. Brocket Hall was to act as a meeting place for an international summit.

Melbourne wasn't a young man anymore and so falling down through a floor onto a dusty old storageroom had been quite a shock. Coughing, as he labouriously scrambled up to a sitting position, he knew he'd hurt his left side pretty badly. His arm and hip were decidedly sore.

It didn't help that they'd been exploring the basement with only flashlights in hands. Now it was nearly pitch black in the room.

"Are you alright, Mr. Bond?" he asked, coughing some more.

[Being trapped in a well is honestly pretty solid grounds for tension and alarm. Having the only person who had come along to help in God Knows How Long end up falling in on top when the edge he was leaning against when trying to get the rope down was undoubtedly even more disheartening. But if anything is going to make Dazai think "today's the day!" about his death, it's how suddenly calm, if clipped and carefully enunciated Kunikida's complaint is.]

But just when he might be starting to really despair, there's a noise from up above. It's not a good noise. It's a lot of mechanical creaking, metal screeching in a way it's probably not supposed to screech, and an unpleasantly fleshy undertone to the whole awful symphony.

Darkness falls over the hole as something blocks out the sun. And then that something is moving, scraping the sides of the too-small pit as it descends too fast into the pit beside Lucas. Almost on top of him, in fact. Better move quick! ]
