[Hitchhiking always looks so easy in the movies. A quick montage, and the inevitable car rolls up with a friendly helper, or the mass murderer villain. Yang's pretty sure she could kick a mass murderer's ass, so she's walked along this road with her thumb jutting skyward for a couple of miles. No luck, though. She thought she was being smart by starting out early before the summer sun gets too hot, but now it's noon, and there's no shade to be found along the Texas freeway. Just a boulder. One single, lonely boulder.]

[Yang plops down onto the dusty ground, taking what little shade the big rock can offer as she wrestles off her jacket and wipes her sweaty brow for the 367th time. She rubs the nap of her neck too, pushing away the damp gold strands from the ponytail that keeps clinging to her skin. She thought the highway would result in more truckers, but the few that rumbled by offered little more than clouds of dust as they sped by. Now she's wishing she'd stuck to the more urban streets so she could at least drag herself into an air-conditioned gas station and buy a bottle of water. She digs into her backpack, eyeing the empty water bottles critically, shaking one of them, then unscrewing the lid to tip a couple more drops into her dry mouth.]

[Damn it. Twenty more miles to Houston, five miles to turn around and go home. She tips her head back against the sun-baked rock and sighs. Maybe this was a mistake. She's so not prepared for this journey like she thought she was.]
