THE CHILDHOOD MEME
Childhood. That magical time between infancy and adulthood where you feel invincible. Where you haven't a care or responsibility in the world. It's a time where imagination runs wild and every day is a new adventure waiting to be had.
While there's plenty of fun out there in the world of adults, there's nothing that quite compares to the innocence of those early years. So, grab your juice box, your favorite toy and remember to be back before the streetlights come on.
HOW TO PLAY:
○ This meme is targeted toward the younger end of the age spectrum (15 and under), but that doesn't mean older characters aren't welcome. Does your character have a soft spot for children? Are they typically the type to be the babysitter? Or maybe they're the older sibling being dragged along to keep an eye on the younger one? Aging down is also an acceptable option, haven't we all wondered what our characters would have been like as kids?
○ Comment with your character, canon, preferences, and any other info you'd like to include.
○ Reply to others.
○ Thread and have fun!
1. PLAYGROUND/PARK : The spot where all the best childhood memories are made. Are you playing a game of tag? Are you hanging upside down on the jungle gym? Are you getting into trouble while your mom is catching up on the latest gossip?
2. SCHOOL : The place where 75% of your day is spent and lifelong friendships are forged. Maybe you're in art class, maybe you're at recess, or maybe you're on a school field trip. The possibilities are endless. Just don't be that kid eating paste.
3. MALL : For the kids on the older end of the spectrum. Whether you're at the arcade, whether you're meeting with friends, or whether your parents gave you twenty bucks to get out of their hair, you've got the entire shopping mall at your disposal.
4. CIRCUS : It's the greatest show on earth! Lion tamers! Acrobats! Elephants! Feats meant to stun and amaze you! Cotton candy the size of your head! Are you watching the show from the stands? Or is your family a part of the show?
5. THEME PARK/AMUSEMENT PARK : It's a classic vacation that's fun for the whole family. Are you the roller coaster type? Or are you the type to shy away from the thrill rides and stick to the carousel instead? Keep a hold of someone's hand, though, the only thing that can ruin a day is a lost child in the park.
6. FAIR/FESTIVAL/CARNIVAL : The theme park on a smaller scale. Sometimes the rides are a little shaky, but there's plenty of good deep fried foods and games to be played. Go out and win yourself a goldfish!
7. NEVERLAND : Yes, you read that right. Just like in Peter Pan, it's the magical place where no one has to ever grow up and adults aren't welcome. What kind of adventures will you get into? Remember, it only takes a little bit of fairy dust and good thoughts to fly.
8. WILDCARD : None of these work for you? Go ahead and created your own!

8 - gardens (about 15ish if you don't mind? Icons are a pain.)
He'd tried a few times. Either got answers that were single words and in a tone enough to completely kill every single thing he could have said in response, or statements that asked for more, but gave him so much to think about, it killed anything he could have hoped to have said too.
That, and they had nothing in common. It was useless, pointless to say anything. But he approaches Ignis again- after a particuarly stern telling off by his father, and he literally shoves himself on the opposing seat to Ignis' small garden table in the sun, bringing his eyes above the mountain of books between them to look at him.]
What're you reading?
[He asks, the question sounding more than a little like a challenge.]
thats totally fine o/
Life in the Citadel wasn't difficult. Handling Prince Noctis was difficult. But it was a duty that Ignis had to take on, thus he was working hard on that part.
But then, there was this other guy that frequently showed up. Ignis was told that he was the son of Sir Amicitia, the Shield of the King. He was also told that he was called Gladiolus and he will one day take over his father's legacy as a Shield. Guy looked like it too, as a shield, Ignis wondered sometimes. But that was it. He was huge and stupid and loud and terribly annoying and always lingering around the worst times.
Just like now. Just like when Ignis was reading something for himself and not for studying.]
Historic romance. [He mutters, not even looking up from his book and maybe sliding a bit lower in his seat to try and disappear behind the pile. He remembers how Sir Amicitia once also talked to him about Gladiolus, trying to tell Ignis to be patient with him. Because one day, they will work together. But. Sigh... he wasn't too fond of him.]
no subject
Historic romance. What good's that to anyone?
[He exhales a 'pff' sound as he leans back in his seat, then lurching forward to lean over the other books- his gaze scornfully regarding the printed title of the hardback. He doesn't even comment- instead, he stares out into the garden.]
no subject
Though at the dismiss of his reading material Ignis huffs gently too. He closes the book, looking at the plain cover of it.]
I suppose not much. There's no gain from it, it's nothing like training or studying. It's just an untrue tale set in Tenebrae two hundred years ago. [He speaks, running his fingers over the golden letters of the title in thought. He likes this tale, it's not the first time he's reading it either.]
But I do enjoy it. [He adds and takes the first volume from the pile to slide it over to the other boy. Sir Amicitia's words echo in his mind about their future.] Maybe you would too. [The 'If you could read' is silent, because Ignis learned to be polite.]
no subject
No thanks. If there's no benefit to it, I got no use for this. Hell. In the time it'd take me to finish it, I could be working on way more important stuff.
[Sit-ups. Crunches. Leg lifts. Etc. The book is returned to the top of the pile, and his gaze moves to the garden again.]
I don't get why you want to read about the world when you can experience it for yourself.
[The 'It's like you need someone to tell you what to think in a book, rather than see things and think what you want' is silent, because Gladio learned to be polite.]
no subject
[Ignis watches as the book is slid back to him. Just as he expected. What does Sir Amicitia want from him anyway? This guy is hopeless... It's clear he doesn't want to be here either. Neither of them want this. It's not even part of either of their duties. Gladiolus will be a bodyguard, his task will be to deflect enemies. Really it doesn't need much so Ignis isn't sure why they are being set up like this.]
Now, there's no way I can go to Tenebrae from two hundred years before, is there? Reading can open up worlds that may be out of our reach too.
Reading gives us knowledge. [He adds, quietly. Subtle way of calling someone stupid. Yes.]
no subject
[The return jab is just as condescending, and Gladiolus sighs, coming to the same conclusion. Just because his dad was both the King's advisor and his shield both, didn't mean that the two tasks were related. He moves his eyes back to the other boy- narrowing in faint scorn as he sees how skinny he is, how bookish. Hell. He couldn't even see his eyes under those glasses.]
Not as some blushing princess in that book, no. But look out there. You think that forest in the gardens is any different from the one whoever wrote that thing used as reference?
[He tsks at that, rolling his eyes in a huff.]
I bet you couldn't climb one of those trees if you tried. See how your knowledge helps there.
no subject
Romance is more than just what you think. It's about respect and how to have a noble heart. [Or so the books tell him. But yes, introducing the concept to Noctis, especially with a special someone in his life too may be beneficial to him.
He then frowns, finally looking over the gardens too. He sighs, admitting it was a good argument. The author described the forests so well that they must have walked among them a lot, too. Maybe that's why he liked to come out here reading these series, to feel closer to the story near these woods.
At the challenge his gaze flickers back to Gladiolus. And once again remembering Sir Amicitia's words. He may not be as big as this guy, but that doesn't mean he can think less of him.]
I know how to climb a tree. If I climb a tree, will you read the book?
no subject
Great traits for a future King, he thought. Some kind of miniature victim complex, and laziness. And he couldn't help but feel envious whenever his father and Regis got back from fighting together on the front. Anyone'd think they were brothers, more than friends.
... And now his advisor was planning on reading stories about that sort of crap to him to soften him up even more. Great.
He's silent, stewing in faint flashes of his own temper when Ignis finally looks to the gardens, only speaking when he is looked at. He snorts at that, shaking his head. ]
Sure. But it's got to be the biggest, in the middle of the forest. I'll come with you, so if you fall and twist your ankle or- [Eyeroll.] whatever, you won't spend all night out there.
[In his mind, this would be hilarious.]
no subject
Naturally, Gladiolus would make it about the biggest, meanest tree. Ignis wouldn't have it other way either. He will climb it and slap the guy with a book. Alright not slap him, just hand it over. Maybe he won't be bothering him anymore after that too. So this challenge gotten a bit more depth than it should.]
Of course you should come with me. Otherwise how would you believe that I climbed the tree? [He mutters, showing a bit of temper himself as he slowly stands up to put his books in a messenger bag to bring them to the journey.] Show me which one then.
no subject
But. Damn. Looks like he is. He doesn't say anything - of course not - but the fact Ignis had the balls to at least try spoke volumes.
He stands up shortly after Ignis does, looking back to the halls. He was supposed to be on guard duty... but they wouldn't miss him. And besides. He didn't want to get chewed out by his dad again for ignoring this guy.
His chair's put back where it was, and he shoves his hands in his pockets- walking out toward the gardens at a quick pace- not too bothered if Ignis had problems keeping up.]
...You really think fiction's gonna help the prince?
[He asks, flicking his head back to view the other - not quite pristine now shoes, glasses, and that bag.]
no subject
He adjusts his glasses in his hurry, looking at Gladiolus' wide back. He's only a year older than Ignis, but already puts a few guards to shame with his figure. Which is expected of him, of course. Yet it's still something to marvel upon; there must be great work put into his strength after all.
The question actually surprises him, his eyes raised to Gladiolus'. It's also a sign that he is thinking about Prince Noctis a lot. It's something at least.]
Even if the only thing it does to keep his mind occupied for a short time, it already did it's purpose. [He speaks with a nod, stumbling a little as they are off the path, venturing deeper into the woods, revealing thicker and taller trees around them.] You don't think it's a good thing?
no subject
[He can't help but feel distinctly like he's being sized up- and he switches his head back to Ignis just to check- before he moves his gaze back to the forest. He slips in where he knows there's a hole in the thicket, and holds a few branches back for Ignis to pass.
Like him or not, he was raised with manners.
Where they're in the forest, he releases the branch, and looks to the other. It's... not quite cold, but the entire woodland is shaded, the sun only breaking through the covering of leaves just slightly.
Thick ivy wraps around the trees, and the entire area, from the overgrown grass, to the fact there simply isn't neat paths here- it's obvious no-ones been here for a long time.]
Just down here.
no subject
[Ignis retorts maybe just a bit louder than necessary. He frowns heavily at the other, because he really just compared him to His Majesty? Yes, Prince Noctis will one day be king, but he is just a child for now.]
You still can't compare to Sir Amicitia yet either.
[As the branches are hold for him he almost stops to a halt in surprise once again. But instead he just mutters a few words in gratitude as he passes. Manners were never truly the problem with Gladiolus. His thick head was it, mostly.
The scene becomes darker and something out of a book. Ignis can't help to stare up at the trees and trying to ignore how his shoes and socks will look unacceptable once they are done with this adventure.]
You know the way so well. You come here often?

Noctis thinks it's stupid, because he still gets tired from walking way too easily and they brought his wheelchair just in case, and he does not need to 'get out of the Citadel and get some fresh air' but...Ignis expressed a wish to go and see the carousel. And he missed Ignis in Tenebrae, plus he can't remember the last time Iggy ever actually said he really wanted to do something. So.
He's here. Not the happiest about it, but he's here.]
What do you wanna do first?
no subject
And Ignis had proved a capable supplicant, by age alone. And that was enough. He'd said what he'd been asked to say, and here they were. Surrounded in coloured balloons, people, children, Ignis thought- as he barely thought himself a child- loud noises and cheerful music and men and women in moogle costumes.
And now what?
This was supposed to make him happy?
His eyes move toward the nearest thing- a sign for the carousel itself, and he glances back to a series of men in suits that followed them with a folded wheelchair, if anything, for their sayso as well as the princes own.]
The carousel.
[He responds, raising a hand to point at it through the throngs of people.]
no subject
But he doesn't want to risk getting separated from Ignis either. He ends up just sidling up close enough to nudge the older boy with his shoulder, following the line of his pointing finger to the sign beckoning them further into the park.]
Okay. Let's go, then.
[It's silly, because he knows they'll follow, that's their entire job. But he still glances behind him to make sure that the contingent of guards are moving too.
Just stop it, you're in Insomnia. It's safe here.
He takes a deep breath and then nods determinedly.]
Last one there's a rotten chocobo egg!
[And then he's running, although not very fast and with a bit of an awkward gait.]
no subject
Noct, please wait-
[He's off. He starts to run after him, concerned that he'll end up separated. Even if Noctis isn't going that fast, there's enough people around to make him worry he'll that he'll lose sight of the shorter boy.
Even when people walk in front of him, when he does lose vision of him, it's only a matter of seconds before he sees him stood in front of a large carousel, with painted chocobos in a manner of positions, some joyful tune playing loudly, accompanied by a number of lights which are bright even in the day.
Some of them are sculpted to look like they're running, some of them are in poses as if they're jumping, and some even look like they're flying. There's a painted carriage surrounded in painted moogles - their wings secured with springs, to make it look like like they're flying between the chocobos too - and there's even a fat chocobo in the centre.]
Wow...
[That was actually quite impressive. He stands next to Noctis, his eyes wide.]
It's amazing.
no subject
One they're actually allowed to ride.
When Ignis catches up to him finally he turns to the other boy with an excited grin on his face, forgetting all about his earlier hesitancy in holding hands to reach for him and tug him towards the line-up for the ride.]
Come on, Iggy! I want to go on the blue one over there. [He points with his free hand.] With it's tongue sticking out.
no subject
Yes, of course.
[He has to stop himself from establishing his own choice (a green one, posed in a jumping motion, with some kind of mechanism on it to make it move slowly up and down the pole as it spins around) for as impressed as he was with the carousel, he was keenly aware that he was not here to have a good time.
The focus of this, as he'd been told when he was brought into the security briefing, was Noctis. He was to go on rides, have fun, enjoy the stalls, even eat all manner of junk at the stalls- but Ignis himself was there as an extension of the guard. Not the guards- of course not- but there as both reassurance for Noctis in the absence of his father and also as someone to take him away- far away- to a designated area if something happened.
Not to ride a carousel.
Ignis understood his role. He'd accepted it as graciously as a child could, (despite noting the look on regret on the King's face as he sat at his throne as the task was dictated by his shield) in the stiff and rigid manner of someone who had never really been a child.
But now he finds himself at a conflict. He wanted to go on that thing. The more he looked at it, the more he wanted to. But he knew his responsibility.
He's pulled into the line though, his eyes uneasy as he looks to Noctis. Maybe if he chose the blue one too, there would be no problem?]
May I ride with you?
[His statement is to Noctis, but he does move his eyes to the Crownsguard in attendance too. As if to ask them, as well. The next question is to Noctis.]
You can take the front, of course.
no subject
[He doesn't mind if Ignis wants to ride with him though. Maybe he's a little scared to be separated too? Or maybe the green one's jumping mechanism is a little too much up and down motion on top of the spinning of the carousel and Iggy's afraid he'll throw up.
That must be it. Noct can't imagine Ignis ever throwing up. That's way too undignified for someone who wears vests buttoned up to the top all the time and shines his shoes even though Noct keeps telling him that they're only going to get dusty when they play outside anyway.
Noct squeezes his hand reassuringly.]
You can ride with me if you want. And if you get dizzy you can just close your eyes, okay?
no subject
[An utter lie, but the look back to the Crownsguard indicated that there was no issue, so it's a compromise he's willing to go with. His face brightens, slightly, as the carousel comes to a halt and the kids are collected. And also as his hand is squeezed.
When they, alongside all of the others in the line are allowed access onto the thing, he even pulls at Noctis' arm, ever so slightly, as they climb the steps onto the machine. Noctis wanted the blue one, after all. And he was going to get it. Fortunately, it's unclaimed when they get to it- Ignis waiting for Noctis to be lifted onto it and waiting for his belt to be secured before he makes his own way, thank you very much onto the seat behind him.
From the higher vantage point, he can see all kinds of things. There's some stall which is shaped exactly like a giant marlboro head, where you can line up and squirt water pistols into tinier marlboros mouths to win prizes, there's some kind of booster ride, a pendulum ride, and some other rides shaped like all manner of other creatures.
Honestly, he'd never seen anything like this.
Ever.
And he leans toward Noctis, his eyes bright at the thought of getting to see them all- even if he was presently pretending to be scared.]
Okay.
no subject
Some of the rides look a little bit like they might make you puke, so Noct's wary of those, but the little spinning buckets don't look so bad and neither does the flying moogle-shaped swings.
There's a miniature replica of the Citadel, only bouncy, that Noct suddenly decides is the best thing ever and they will definitely be stopping there next. He has an arm stretched to point it out to Ignis but then the ride jolts to a start and he lets out a little shriek of excitement and grasps onto the pole in front of him with both hands.]
We're going, we're going Iggy!
no subject
But there's a shudder as the mechanism's brakes are taken off- and it starts to move. He smiles, widely, both of his hands gripping the brace on the chocobo as the carousel starts to gain speed.
... He's having fun. So much fun, in fact, that he forgets to look at the Crownsguard waiting for them both in the crowd of people. When the music ends, and the ride shudders to a stop again, his eyes are bright- and a smile lingers on his face as he gets off. This time, he leans against the ceramic chocobo to help him down himself.]
That was so fun!
[He lifts Noctis down- holding onto his hands as he steps down so he doesn't fall.]
What are we doing next?
no subject
Yeah!
[He agrees emphatically, though part of him wonders why Iggy sounds so surprised about the carousel being fun since it was the attraction he'd so insistently wanted to see in the first place. But he's glad that his friend like the ride. It's been a while since he saw Ignis smile so brightly. Usually he has his serious face on and Noct has to poke him and tickle him a bunch to make him laugh.
They step down off the platform, letting new riders take their place on the chocobos, and Noct turns in the direction of the miniature Citadel.]
Bouncy castle. [he declares with a determined nod. One of the Crownsguards shoots the other a look at that but they don't say anything so Noct doesn't care if they disapprove or whatever. His legs are fine and he wants to bounce.]
