NEAR MISS/CLOSE CALL MEME

Ever been in a life-and-death situation? No? Maybe you will be now. Something is happening, something horrible, and you're about to die. Maybe someone you love is about to die. Or someone you hate. Maybe you're the danger itself. Either way, you (or your prey) get out by the skin of your (their) teeth. How close was it really? Is someone in deep shit? Alternatively, this can be used for something else: regular life situations. Miss someone at the dance you want to see, can't catch that criminal you need to put away, whatever. The world is your oyster!

[Has had this happen to him/watched this happen to those he loves many, many times in canon. OTA, canon, cross canon, assumed CR, etc. all welcome.]

[It was supposed to be easy.

A nice day out—almost like a vigorous walk in the park, or a trail run along some nice scenery. Something kind of vigorous, and not exactly recreation, but a chance to get active and stretch their muscles. Like normal people, really, except normal people's active days out don't involve striking down Heartless.

But even if he's trying the normal life thing, and mostly liking it, Roxas isn't a normal person and neither are his best friends. There are times when the guise of being a regular teenager doesn't fit right, like a jacket that's too small, and maybe that's why Axel had suggested they go out and do something that would have fit better as part of their old life, except this time there's no Organization and no Kingdom Hearts. Clearing out Heartless helps the locals, which maybe makes them a little like heroes, which is funny to think about. Roxas came from a hero, sure, but he's never been one himself.

Xion's out shopping with Olette, so it's just the two of them. At first it's just fun, and balanced in a way things never were in the old days. He's got one Keyblade and a lot of experience using it on Axel, but he doesn't feel like some kind of veteran. They're partners, equals.

Everything goes wrong when the huge Heartless appears out of nowhere, surrounded by a swarm of lesser beings of darkness. It's fast, and seems to have about a thousand spikes, and is surrounded by a miasma of foul magic. Even then, after he's dropped his smile and is taking this seriously, Roxas isn't scared. He's faced down worse. They both have.

But when the Heartless' whipped tail sends Axel flying through the air to land with an awful thump and he doesn't move for seconds that stretch out way too long, that's when he panics. It's a different time, different place, different circumstances, but for an instant Roxas is back in the space between realms, looking out through Sora's eyes as the only person he remembers caring about spent the remainder of his life on one final, devastating attack that left him with nothing.

Not again. Not again. He's lost too much and even if he got much of it back, he can't bear to lose anything more. Roxas' eyes flash and then so does the light, obliterating the huge Heartless and any other creature unfortunate enough to be close to it.]
