Flowers, in the Victorian Era (1837-1901), were often used as means of communication when people could not openly say things that we do these days. Think about someone who is naturally repressed; now imagine a whole society focusing on being repressed. You can see why lovers needed some sort of secret code. Poor things.

No longer used much, there are some remaining, well-known meanings—roses inspiring passion and love are a classic example. So, grab a bouquet and give it to someone special. Beware of what certain flowers could say, though. Not all flowers were used happily.

scooting back to where she was sitting, she starts holding up the book, flipping through to show the pages she's written full of prayers. she looks pretty pleased with herself. ]

Hmmm. [ he takes the book, inspecting it critically. finally: ]

Your penmanship is abhorrent.

her face scrunches up, looking at him with exasperation and a good deal of displeasure. ]

If you can read it, it's fine, isn't it?

A land god has a suitable amount of elegance in everything, including in penmanship. [ he pauses, eyeing her expression, before giving a sigh. ]

.. But it will get better. This will suffice. [ and then, a little hesitantly: ] Good job, Nanami.

[ and there he goes again, back to how a land god should be. she'd think after at least this amount of time she'd be a bit better, but it seems she's still not doing it exactly right..

however the last bit does grant her some pause, as she blinks at him, surprised at his words.

did he just praise me?

if anything that makes her smile again, replying with a nod. ]

That's as much a sign as any that it's time for a break!

[ she'll be taking the flowers, looking pleased with them ]

Now where to put these..

[ If he could, he'd regret praising complimenting her - now she's cheery and bouncy and she likely won't be very receptive to going back to work - but she's happy, and how can he bring himself to hate that smile, contagious as it is? It's not long before his own lips curl up, just a little. ]

I'll make some tea while you do that, Nanami. I bought some snacks as well, while I was out. [ and he turns to go to the kitchen. ] Ahh, there is a vase near the entrance. Perhaps the flowerscan be put there.

[ really tomoe how can you regret making her smile like that? though perhaps if nanami knew how easily obvious it was that she blooms under your hand from every soft word--she might not show it as well. but then again, that wouldn't exactly be nanami. ]

[ also snacks are always a good thing. to think of how she had only been eating rice for lunch..look at her now. a bit bouncy in her step now, she moves to place them in the vase he mentioned, adjusting them with her fingers until they're positioned just right. hands on her hips, she admires the view. ]

[ He's quick to get to work, setting the fish into the sink to prepare later for dinner, and extracts the snacks from the grocery bags to place them on trays. The kettle is soon put over a fire, and he takes the trays to the entrance way.

For a moment, he's just watching - just appreciating the simple scene: his lady and mistress, with complimenting flowers in a place where she belonged. After a moment, Tomoe tilts his head, casually commenting, ]

It would look better on the other side. [ before leaving to set the treats down on the tatami mat in the spacious room adjacent to the entrance. ]

in her point of view either angle looks fine, so she turns, raises a brow. ]

When he returns to the entranceway, a single cup of tea on the tray, Tomoe frowns. ]

[ she walks over to take the tea, sighing. ]

If you're putting it in the middle, you might as well be admitting to having no decorative sense.

[ But after a moment, he takes the vase and puts it.... just barely off center, placing it more to the right. ]

Well excuse me, I didn't know it was that huge of a deal.

[ besides it's not like they teach how to move a vase in class okok. also hey tomoe she sees what you're doing there, and with one more scowl, she goes back to sit where she was, taking a sip of the tea with a huff. looks like you're as delightful as ever today!]
