A promise is a promise

promised to someone else.

Ah, love. Ain't it great, all those starstruck, breath-stealing, head-swimming feelings? Be careful you don't throw up...from joy. Hey, but you should know all this; you're smitten, yourself! And the person who has your heart is promised to-

Oh. Oh. The person you love's with someone else, huh? Ouch. Whether it be a mutual romance that's interrupted by an (also mutual) attraction to you or an unfortunate circumstance or obligation that's got them pinned to somebody they don't even care for, they're out of your reach.

...or are they? It's your life, don't let us tell you what to do, still- listen to your heart. Listen to your gut. Probably don't listen to your brain. Decide whether or not you'll do the "right thing" and lose them forever.

Or, stick with us here: tell them to screw everything else and just be with you. You want them. They want you. How could that be bad?

  • comment with your character, the role your character would likely play, other info, prefs, rambling screeds, whatever.
  • reply to others and thread idk.

Political marriage is right up his alley, he is the kind of person who might choose to swallow the bitter pill if it means for 'the greater good' of many. He might choose a political marriage in spite of going against his heart, or to back off from a courtship if the subject of his affection would have better prospect if with 'the other one' instead of with him.

( Valryn 'canonly' lost his ex to an arranged marriage. but also his ex could have bucked up and not sold out to said arranged marriage like a weenie. so uh. that happened.

by which I mean, Valryn is perfect for this tricky situation. either yours is promised to someone else and he's going to pitch a fit and scrape for yours' attention; or Valryn is getting married off to some priestess as her consort annnd he's probably going to stab someone and backflip out a window anyway. get in on this, before he tries killing all of his in laws, preferably!

[I just finished the book, strangely enough. Read it for a book club between another pair of muses :) I know, how does someone get through high school without reading it? I don't know the answer, but it happened in my case.]

Retired Colonel J. Sebastian Moran surveyed the ballroom and chewed on his lip deciding what to do as he watched the lady in question laugh with the rogue Wickham. A rogue that assumed that /her/ family had money. Geroge was not a clever man if he believed that a family with no male heir and four? five? daughters to give away had money. It would be a shame if she were tricked into an unequal marriage. She was well read and interesting and Wickam was an arse.

She was in love with a fraud. He knew because the braggart owed /him/ several thousand pounds.

[OOC: Lovely! When I was in school, P&P wasn't really a thing in most regular English classes so I can see how that would work. Heck the only reason I read it back then was because of the '95 A&E miniseries.

I've taken a few liberties here just to set the scene a bit more. Feel free to change anything you like, assume other things and whatnot. My PMs are open to any questions you may have as well! c:]

The Colonel had made quite a name for himself since his arrival to Meryton and it's surrounding neighborhood. He seemed to be everything gentlemanly on an outside level at least and in such a small town with so many unwed daughters, such was more than enough to be a high boon to many a restless mother.

And so Mrs. Bennet quite adored him, of course, without saying so much as a handful of sentences to him. Elizabeth herself had yet to completely form her opinion. She might have formed a solid enough opinion on a certain surly gentleman from a single dismissive gesture of his but on the whole Elizabeth tended to be much more cautious... typically. Appealing to her surprisingly quick dislike of Mr. Darcy seemed to work nicely around her typical good judgement, of course.

With the good Colonel Moran, Elizabeth was decided on just a few facts. One, that he seemed well read and well spoken, able to keep up a conversation very adeptly and make it interesting as well. And two, she was fairly sure there was a great deal more to him that she simply couldn't suss out with casual talk. That was much the same as anyone else of course and she saw little reason not to be friendly with him when he had done the same in reply.

And so it is once Wickham seems to oh-so-regrettably leave her company for the allure of party games, she eventually drifts her way into Moran's company. It's not for several hours at least but she does greet him cheerfully and given his military standing considers that she might have more information on Wickham himself from the man. So she begins casually, her smile light.

"Has the evening been to your likely thus far, sir?"

[Loves!]

Gentlemanly. Meaning that he kept out of trouble, was kind to young and old, the deserving and the undeserving (at least where the deserving were present) and kept his gambling and duelling to a minimum and out of sight from polite society. He had spent his time in India and the high desert mountains beyond, had fought in every campaign that occurred from the age of eighteen up until a year ago, and had collected an impressive set of medals. What Moran did not disclose was that upon his father's death, he would be Lord John Sebastian Moran. The old biddies would discover that soon enough and be flinging eligible maids his way as he would be expected to marry and have an heir. While they were still determining who he was, he had time to find someone who he actually liked and could perhaps love - although he had only loved one person in his entire life and it was not his mother nor his father. Somewhere in the darkness, at the very beginning of his life, his Ayna had laid the first spark of love and he had been loved and cared for in the first six years of his life before he was torn from her arms.

He had come to the base at Meryton as his last duty and had stayed at the behest of his mother who did not wish to host him at her house and neither he nor his father had a desire for 'John' to stay at his father's Mayfair address. They did not get along. As a favour to the commanding officer, he stayed to train sharpshooters and was give a billet and meals in return.

Was glad when the party broke to cooling (and chaperoned) walks in the garden, refreshments, cards and silly blind man's bluff. Was contemplating the clock upon the mantle and the trouble of rousting soldiers home when he was approached by the woman he had considered earlier that evening. Thankfully they had been introduced some days ago and speaking now was not a breach of manners.

Moran cleared his throat and green eyes smiled as he gave her his attention, "It has, Miss Bennett. You danced well tonight. I regret that I could not ask for a place on your card."

He could dance, or at least could prior to his jig with a tiger, and was optimistic that he would again be able to once given leave by the physician. Until then, he would keep to his walks until the scars were more securely knitted. Until then, he could play the strings, although he only had the violin with him this journey.

"May I fetch you a cup to quench your thirst?" a slight gesture towards the small buffet and the punchbowl where others were gathered.

His question brightens her smile a touch. "You have seen through my designs, sir, for it was in that very direction I had hopes of treading next." Punch was a very good excuse for light conversation.

As they avail themselves of said punchbowl, Elizabeth turns to the topic of dancing lightly enough. "Do you enjoy dancing as much as the other military men here then?" It was likely well known how much Elizabeth seemed to enjoy it. She was an active woman though, given to long walks daily.

( there is every possibility that he doesn't recognise her.

he had only seen her without her glamour, pale and impossible underwater; he has no reason to connect the nymph who responded very, very warmly to a game of chase around ancient fallen statuary with the ostensibly human woman he's introduced to at the first state dinner to welcome him and his intended bride as representatives to the surface world. a philanthropist's daughter, well-connected but quiet, all in warmer, softer tones than what he had touched.

and she hadn't even given him her name, so there's really no reason to be piqued he hadn't mentioned an engagement-

but she is, all the same, smiling tightly and keeping her answers brief and just this side of polite. even for her, her father's glance is a little askance at how quickly she's seemed to take a dislike to visiting royalty.

( just as obvious to him, then, that she forcibly reins in what was likely about to be an unwarrantedly snappish response. he's hardly said anything to her for her to take amiss, but, well.

that is, in part, the problem.
)

You'll have to excuse me, ( measured, more carefully, ) it's been a trying evening. I don't think I'm making my best impression.

[ He's drawn by the flash of skin before his eyes focus on her tattoo. He knew that design. Traced it with his fingers, even, and almost his tongue if they had had more time. His eyes flick up to Gwen's face, dark blue and piercing. He rises automatically but reaches out to wrap his fingers around her elbow. ]

Let me escort you to the balcony for some fresh air.

Political marriages are a joke, yet somehow they still seem like a good idea to some. It might not be marrying two countries, but Tess has little doubt she'd have been married off to seal some kind of company merger had Lionel bothered to raise her.

That doesn't mean she isn't curious. She's well aware of the betrothal but can't help but wonder if they'll still go through with it. And if not, what that means for Orm. Mera seems to have her hands full of Kings, but where does that leave him? And why does she care so much?

Arthur's brought some influential Atlanteans to a warm, sandy beach for an informal meeting, the League invited to show support for a union between land and sea. Given her childhood fantasies, Tess couldn't help but tag along.

It isn't long before she notices Orm drifting from the crowd, perhaps lost in his own thoughts. She also notices--

"You haven't touched your drink."

Orm was a little lost in his thoughts as Tess approaches, then speaks to him.

He glances down at his drink, then back up to her, with a slight shrug.

"I'm not thirsty." He tilts his head, looking at her. "I don't think I caught your name?"

"You should be. You need to drink more when you're on land. Maybe not that, but water."

She holds out a hand. "Tess. Tess Mercer."

[Probably the one promised to someone else, given her role in ruling Whitestone. Political marriages and such. Maybe an AU where there is no Council of Whitestone?]
