Arranged Marriage Turned More To have and to hold, you said, till death do us part, all while the sharp, swinging pendulum of obligation hung overhead. But how could you have truly meant those words? This union has been tainted from the start, forever bearing the chains of an arranged marriage. It would be understandable if you couldn't bear to look at your new life partner, eternal reminder of your stolen future that they are, much less like them. Much less love them... Still, things can change. You could realize that they are in the same boat as you or, that when compared to others around you, they are the lesser of evils. Perhaps you even open up to the idea of a friendship; at the very least, an alliance may be in order to become a power couple in a perilous world. From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. Will you acknowledge this? Can the two of you have a happily ever after - happier than if you'd met in another fashion - or will you hold firm in your distaste? how to play. - Everybody loves "couples forged by less-than-ideal circumstances" tropes! - Comment with your character, prefs, all that good stuff. - Reply to others. - IDEC where you set your threads, it's wide open. Fantasy world with hairy hobbits, old-timey lands, future AUs, do a space marriage for all I care. I'm sure they're still getting married in Star Wars or whatever.

Illya sighed, he had seen pictures of Lady Mary. She was of course, beautiful and from a noble English family. Although he didn't agree with the arranged marriage, he would follow through with it. It was his duty to fulfill the Tsar's wishes and if the Tsar commanded it he would obey.

England was beautiful, he admitted to himself. He watched the green and rolling hills go by as the limousine drove him to meet the Lady. It would be their first meeting and he was nervous. He had thus traveled all the way to England to meet and marry her. The limousine bore the flags of the Tsars of Russia, the Romanov double headed eagle. The Downton Abbey, her families estates came into view. The mansion was grand and impressive.

He turned to his aid de camp, Dmitri, "You have met the Lady Mary, do you think she will like me?"

"You are handsome, rich, and a prince of all Russias. How could she not?" the man asked as the car pulled into the drive leading up to the grand English house.

[Just to make things easier, assuming that the Russian Revolution never happened and Illya is a cousin of the Tsarina Alexandra. Because a Soviet citizen would not recognize bourgeois royalty.]

Newspaper clippings, reports, photographs and sketches, all of seemingly unconnected people, details and incidents begin arriving anonymously by mail to 221B Baker Street every couple of days, like pearls on a string-- or a trail of breadcrumbs. Irene knows her perfume clings to the papers, obliterating any true anonymity of the parcels. She knows Sherlock will plainly see her manipulation for what it is, but she counts on the mystery... no, not mystery, but the challenge, to prove irresistible for him. He's likely already noticed a pattern here all on his own, with his outstanding mind, but she also flatters herself; trusting he'll be hard-pressed to deny himself the chance to cross paths with her again, to engage in a rematch after she slipped through his fingers the last time.

She had made things between them personal with that, and it is that very fact she counts on when she follows the string of correspondence up with a simple invitation to afternoon tea, trusting that he comes alone and not with the Scotland Yard in tow.

It's a lovely Spring day, even in London; sunny, if not overly warm. Seated at a table in the elegant dining hall of the hotel, Irene reads a newspaper, casual as can be, giving no indication of waiting for someone. Brown curls are piled beneath a stylish hat pinned at a jaunty angle, her frame clad in shades of grey-blue and black.

There is, however, a second tea cup keeping company to hers on the table, empty as yet. ]

James had spent most of his life not thinking about marriage. He had been betrothed to a girl he barely remembered one summer when his father had visited their estate and then the following summer he had gone to sea. He'd hardly had a chance to think of home, of her, of anything in the intervening years as promotion and pirates and circumnavigation filled his thoughts. But one's future cannot be forever avoided, and as he stepped onto dry land half a world away from Whitestone, a message lay waiting.

His marriage to Cassandra de Rolo could no longer be put off, delayed, or avoided. He had to return home.

That had been several weeks ago. The intervening time had been something of a whirlwind. The journey to Whitestone had been via carriage over roads long untended, and the settlement itself... was not what he recalled. He had remembered Whitestone as a prosperous settlement, a healthy settlement but that was not what he saw through carriage windows. Nor was the reason for the decay explained to him, nor did he have the opportunity to speak to his intended, only glance at her from the other end of a table at supper the night he arrived.

The day after, they were wed with less pomp than he was expecting, quickly and quietly as if this was a chore that everyone else present wanted to get over with as soon as possible, and go back to more important business. It was only until that night, when they were firmly ushered towards a private chamber, that James Norrington had any chance at all to exchange anything more than an I do with Lady Cassandra de Rolo of Whitestone.
