THE FANFICTION TROPE MEME



We all know them. Often bewildering, sometimes surprisingly effective trends in fanfiction, the ones that mean when we click on a story we know exactly what to expect.

Play it as crack, play it straight, however you want. Be sure to note if you are open to smut and gen, just smut, or just gen!

GEN
1) SUDDENLY A CHILD. Whether it be curse, technology or just plot device, one character has now been de-aged. Do they retain their memories, or are they now just the child that they once were?
2) SUDDENLY A PUPPY. Again, stemming from curse or plot device, one character has been transformed into a cute, fluffy animal. Could be a puppy, a kitten, a bird… either way, someone's got to take care of them.
3) SUDDENLY WINGS. A world where everyone has wings? A gift of wings, from some mysterious figure? Either way, obligatory wingfic option.
4) THERE'S FIC ABOUT US! Two characters discover fanfiction/RP/fandom/what-have-you. Hijinks ensue.
5) BODY SWAP. Wait, but you're me, and I'm you, and how did this even happen I want my body back!
6) DOPPLEGANGER. There's someone who looks exactly like you out there. Are they from a different universe? An evil twin? Or have you just been duplicated?
7) HIGH SCHOOL AU. Maybe they're bitter enemies in canon, but in high school, they're both part of the chess team, so they'd better get along.
8) TELEPATHIC LINK. Characters can now read each other's minds. Maybe it'll contribute to a better understanding between them.
9) WOOBIEFICATION. Aww, it's not his fault he killed all those people. He just needed an understanding shoulder.
10) FIX-IT. Yeah, that canon event that screwed up my OTP? Never happened. This is how it really went.
11) BACKSTORY TRAUMA. Unexpectedly, one character or another has a severe trauma in their backstory, whether it be rape, abuse, abandonment, or something darker.
12) MARY SUE. There's someone utterly perfect/a long-lost relative/a former girlfriend lurking around. (Can be used to cross over two canons; a character in one canon fill the role of a Mary Sue in another.)
13) OTHER. Because one can never cover all fanfic tropes in a simple list.

SMUT
1) ANTI-FROSTBITE SEX. It's an icy cave, only one blanket, and one of you might not survive the night. Unless you share body heat.
2) HEALING COCK. One of you has been subjected to a major trauma. Rape, or torture, or a severe injury. What's the solution? Sex.
3) REDEMPTION COCK. Because having sex with a hero is enough to turn that villain around.
4) ALPHA/BETA/OMEGA AU. (See A/B/O meme .)
5) BDSM AU. In this world, you aren't gay or straight; you're dom or sub. That is the root of your sexual identity.
6) SEXSWAP. Suddenly you have a vagina, or a penis, or both, when you didn't have them before. Time to play…?
7) PROSTITUTE AU. Pay up, or you'll get nothing.
8) M-PREG. Can be expanded to all types of unexpected pregnancy. May lead to fluff and sudden domestic behavior, including nesting.
9) SEME/UKE. The most basic of smut fanfiction tropes: one person's now in charge, the other is now a trembling virginal mess.
10) OTHER. Because you know there are more.

In BDSM AU, Loki can be sub or dom - sub means he's awkward and spiteful about it, dom means he's awkward and vindictive about it. A/B/O AU, similarly, he can be Alpha or Omega, though personally I see Omega a little better.

Combining options is also good! OTA for gen and for smut. ]

There’s a wake, after, at a bar her father held a share in. She begs off, and goes to another place thirty minutes down the road, avoiding eye contact with Crews and Tidwell when she leaves. She sits at a back booth, and orders a glass of scotch. Puts her head down on the table, and then—

Laughs. Full bodied, table-shaking laughter. It sounds off, but sober, and echoes through the bar.]

He's not a big fan of missions in Israel. There's a whole new set of circumstances to deal with, a group of people who not only are trained for intrusions onto their country's ground but expect it, people who are damn good at their jobs, even if they aren't as good as Clint.

At least this time he's definitely not targeting someone the Israelis would miss. The assassination is of a serious asshole, a guy who plays 'principled' terrorists against human trafficking and crime syndicates. Nothing complicated about this, no need to seduce anyone or infiltrate or spend a week listening to some guy order groceries.

Which is why it comes as something of a surprise to find out that there's already someone else going after this guy. Something he finds out after his arrow sinks through his eye, and finds out as this asshole's bodyguards swarm Clint.

Better to be taken alive and have a chance at escape than die here. Priority #1 is always staying alive. So Clint surrenders and he has the crap beaten out of him a few times in a concrete box with a little metal drain in the floor.

Would be nice if someone could come rescue him about now.
