Savage love
![]() Long ago, in a distant land... That's how a fairy tale would start, followed by velvet words and beautiful images on parchment, telling of the adventures of heroes. But you? You don't get a fairy tale - you certainly don't get the prerequisite knight in shining armor, whether you wanted one or not. Forget the knights. Bring on the barbarians, the raiders on behemoth ships, uncouth Northmen from the coldest reaches, and, if you're from a fantasy-setting, the orcs/dwarves/wild elves/other species. It's the right time, yet the wrong place and the wrong person, for sure. Maybe you're being protected, somehow; on the other hand, you could be getting kidnapped. At any rate, your companion is a rough-edged warrior, a commoner, a ruffian rogue, or even worse, a savage. Will you even survive this story unscathed? Because you certainly won't get a picture-book ending or, far be it, true love...right? Or, if you're just here for the smut: observe the "loin cloths or Pelts of the Barbarian, taut rippling muscles, oiled back, impressive weapons, the beard of a grizzly bear (or inexplicably clean-shaven at all times) and glorious manly manes."

And he was the most at danger from both sides, being a simple Ram and not any kind of predator, or Beast so great that no predator would dare harm it.
Perhaps that made him the best person to try to turn the small Man back. So he approaches, not mindful of what he might look like, shaggy mane and thick curling horns, along with his buckskin loin cloth. Scars where natural for prey that fought off all attackers with only their bodies, why would it frighten anybody, and muscles would only be natural for any boy his age.
So it should be fine to speak out, voice loud over the quiet of forest around them.]
You are off the path, you know. It's the wrong time of year to hunt, Man.
no subject
Huh? I'm not hunting. Well, unless I get stuck up here for more than two days. Which I doubt will happen.
[He flashes the other boy a happy smile, and makes no move to try to walk or run away. Similarly, he doesn't approach. Yet.]
This place is so beautiful, I couldn't resist the urge to explore and take it all in!
no subject
So, he moves a little closer, giving the Man (or is he a youth still as well? He's never met an adult other than his mother who was shorter than him.)]
You seem sure. Not that I want you to leave, but...the forests around the mountain are dangerous for you! Even the shamans of your people carry staves with rings to scare off the creatures on the main road so they will not be harmed.
[He's almost five feet from the red head now, and it's pretty obvious that Izuku isn't a Man. Not with dark furry legs that end in hard cloven hooves.]
It's...also not said anywhere that Men understand the beauty of the Mountains...unless they try to think to tame them? Are you coming to make another mine?
no subject
A mine?? People really do that?
[Ah, but he dimly remembers some of the village folk from back home working them. They don't just exist, it seems?]
...Ah, memory serves, I've seen something like that before in my birthland. I'd been taught that "god put them there" but... man makes them? That makes more sense.
[Putting his hands on his hips, he tilts his head.]
So, to answer at last: nope! I'm not here to do anything other than look, admire, and pass through. And I don't see the point in carrying a weapon. Using them hurts people!
[He pouts to recall that. If a fall from a tree is enough to leave a few scars, a blow from a stick is bound to, too.]
I dunno about the staves with rings things. The people I come from only come with pointy sticks and stones. I think it's stupid.
no subject
[Izuku lifts his (thankfully normal, if a little mangled by scars.) hand to pull at his lip.]
Rocks and sticks...we are the same? We are between Man and Beast, so we use some tools, but...I prefer my hands as well, if I can.
You are very gentle, still, maybe I should stay with you until you go back to the paths of Men. Neither Bears, nor Children of them are as permissive as Sheep.
no subject
[He smiles sheepishly, but also uncertain. His parents never approved of his taste in "nice" things.]
I don't know a thing about Beast Children - I assume you're one? - so I should rely on you for, erm.. safety? I guess? Especially since we're strangers, and it would be foolish for either of us to fully trust each other just because we happen to agree.
[Even though his emotions are foolish, truth be told. He feels that he can trust this ram-person. Quite well, too, at least to some extent. He's cute, too.]
no subject
[Izuku's not one to judge. He's got more than a few shiny things he keeps, and he had to kill an animal to get the leather he wears to keep himself decent for the sake of humans he does meet.]
The legends say we were born from the spirits of Beasts and Men, so that we may protect both from each other...and themselves. Trees and rocks are beyond our emotions. Only your gods can force them, and they are just as fickle as Men.
But yes, here on the Mountain, I will protect you, Man. It will be my honor as a Ram.
[To prove so, he kneels, bowing his head as he's seen Men do.]
I am called Izuku. At your service.
no subject
[Flustered by what he's seeing, Ren's brow furrows as his thoughts short-circuit by the sight. A man, bowing to him in any sort of way?
[He's not sure how to understand it. Confessing to any weakness is dangerous. His stomach's doing some weird flip-flops that make him feel a little sick. His parents' words echo in his head, well-intentioned but venomous all the same.
[So he does what any rational person would do when shown some foreign act that might as well be one from god:
[He starts to run away.]
no subject
But, he's promised to protect the Man Child. (He's decided that Ren is at least still young. If he's so small and unwary he must be.) And so he takes off after the bolting red head, much better equipped to chase after somebody through the trees and undergrowth of the Forest and Mountain.]
Wait! Man! You need to be careful here it's near-!
[Not so distant howls cut him off. Shit. Hopefully the boy will have the sense to get up in a tree soon.]
no subject
[Right, speaking of - let's go over details. Ren's a boy, boys don't bow at other boys. He's never been bowed at before. People only bow before gods. Ren isn't a god. Why would someone bow at him like he's one? He was speaking politely. He wasn't even calling him a girl! (Yay for bandage wraps!)
[Right, he said his name was Izuku. He (Ren) didn't introduce himself.. how rude.
[He resists the urge to heavily sigh.]
no subject
And he comes sailing through bush and underbrush, kicking a male wolf hard with his powerful legs before sailing near the roots of the tree Ren had decided to hide himself in.
He doesn't get much time to breath before he's launched at once again by the wolf he's facing.
Predator and Prey...or so it would be, if Izuku wasn't a Man as well as a Beast. One capable with throwing off his opponents with arms as well as legs and horns.
It's over quick as it had started, with the wolf yelping and running off again, and Izuku just sporting a few claw marks for his trouble. Nothing new, really. He just needs to...collapse and fall down at the foot of the tree for now.
He leans back against the trunk, panting heavily, eyes wide and shimmering with excitement from defeating a foe, and he looks up to finally catch sight of Ren's feet dangling over him.]
Ah...stay up there a little longer! He might try bringing back his brothers and sisters.
no subject
[So, he stays up the tree, some of the branches shaking from his wiggling. He still looks around, trying to catch sight of anything else. A few leaves get sent down from his movements, but not much else.]
...Um.
[Peering back down at Izuku, his face almost as red as his hair, he continues,] ...I'm Ri... Ren.
no subject
Ren! Hello! Is...is it normal for Men to run away when bowed to? I usually see people bowing to each other, did...hee... did I get the greeting wrong?
no subject
[He bites his lip.]
Why would.. you bow at me? Seeing that, I started to feel kinda sick. It was really confusing.
no subject
[Finally catching his breath, Izuku stands, shyly digging at the dirt with one hoof.]
Ideally, Beast Children are to respect everybody. In practice it's a little less easy. Mean people live everywhere...but...you are a person, and must be respected, until you show that you aren't...and I thought bowing what to show somebody respect?
[He bites his lip as well, digging that hole at his hooves a little more.]
I...didn't mean...mean to make you unhappy.
no subject
...Dad said god would smite me to hell if I disobeyed by telling him what I believed. I was sad when he and mom burned a journal I bartered for in town because it displeased him. Because "if a girl is smart, she goes to hell, too".
[It all kind of comes out like a poison, Ren's tone varying between confused and upset, but he soon quiets, listening again for wolves, and trying not to shake. He's not sure why he's shaking, but his heart is pounding and a cold sweat hits him pretty hard.]
no subject
[He paces, unsure what to do or say to that...other than he wishes he could bring the other male close and soothe him somehow.
And then that confession finally hits him. Ren...ah, if he had gotten closer, maybe he would've picked up the scent.]
Hell, I know the concept. It's a place made by the Gods of Men. A place for the wicked...
I don't think you are wicked. Not for being smart, not for being gentle. Not one bit. And I have seen a wicked Man or two.
[Maybe he should change the subject?]
Do you feel that because of what they said, you must be a boy? That the only way you can be wicked is to be one? Or is your soul a Man's, and your body simply disagrees?
no subject
[He hasn't really considered either concept - and he actually doesn't really understand them the way they're phrased.]
I just know I'm a boy. At first I wanted to be a boy because they didn't have to wear skirts. But I'm happy just being a boy.
[He's at least a good listener - he hasn't climbed down from the tree yet. He trusts Izuku to tell him when it's safe. Izuku can fight. Ren... doesn't know how.
[He kind of feels like a cat stuck in a tree, though. Except he isn't stuck. He still feels shaky - and it's visible in the way that the leaves and thinner branches tremble, too.]
Can you climb a tree? This one? The view is really good.
no subject
[So, he starts to climb, or more like hop, up to Ren. Both hands and hooves allow him some interesting mobility when climbing.
Once he makes it up there, he cautiously seats himself on the branch near Ren, listening for a moment before nodding his head.]
The wolves are heading off to easier prey...though I wouldn't get down just yet.

What if nobody saw her on that ship? She would die, surely. She had been shipwrecked for two nights. This was the morning of the second day. She desperately needed help.
"Help!" she croaked in a pitiful voice that no one could hear.
She was a pirate and most likely no one on that ship would be her friend. It could well be a vessel of the Navy and she'd be captured for good but she didn't care at this point.
It had been another Navy ship that she was a prisoner of, but then a storm happened and she had been thrown overboard. She had been lying on a piece of a wooden board ever since.
[Lots of options here if you are interested in this.
* They are both pirates so they've heard other's names at least, even if they have not met. He could know there's a pirate lady who has dark hair and is tall for a woman, and who is looking for a treasure map.
* If they have met I could even go so far as to say they were former lovers. Maybe she ran away from him and he hates to help her but does so anyway. If he left her, she might want him back but he's cool towards her.
* He has heard of the shipwreck of the Navy ship, or not. If he knows about it, I'd prefer he isn't aware she was a prisoner there.
* Something else? Your choice.]

It had been Anne Bonny up in the crow's nest when the Ranger came close enough to the wreck to spot a single survivor, clinging to debris. That was probably the luckiest thing for Morgan, otherwise whoever else had been holding watch at the time might simply have not reported it or told the captain, who would have ordered them to leave the area immediately. Instead, Bonny had insisted that the survivor be brought on board.
Whether Anne had done it for charity or to see her captain squirm, Charles didn't know and would likely never know. But Charles Vane had the situation before him, like it or not, and he'd have to deal with it.
Morgan Adams. Half a dozen years back or so, she and Vane had disheveled any bed they could find in Nassau, right up until the chance to captain the Ranger had come along and Charles had not hesitated to take it.
By the time he could at last shoo Bonny away from the other woman, Morgan had been brought to a small cabin, wrapped in a blanket, and given a deep cup of rum to warm herself with. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it. "That wasn't your ship that was wrecked there," he said simply.
no subject
It wasn't a Naval vessel, that became clear fast. The crew was a raggedy bunch, and she recognized some familiar faces. Just who the captain was, no one would tell her even if she tried to ask. Not that she wasn't grateful for the blanket and rum and--.
oh, for fuck's sake! She'd recognize that voice from six feet under. In good and bad.
Charles. He'd ditched her after all the fun they'd had together. It had stopped hurting but to have him here, rescuing her for all things, brought back too many memories. No way she'd let him know that, though.
Morgan lifted up her face to see the man she'd loved before. Damn heart! Do not miss a beat now.
"You wish, wouldn't you?" she replied with as much sass as she could muster, given her condition. Then she coughed and not at all dignified. "But no, it belonged to our friends in the uniform. How lucky for me that you showed up."
no subject
It took about all the self-control he could muster to keep from laughing at this completely absurd situation. He'd never expected to see Morgan again, and if he did, her being pissed as hell at him would be understandable. And from what he was hearing, he'd been right.
"Very lucky, as my crew tells me. You wouldn't have lasted past the night."
He pulled a stool over with one booted foot and sank down onto it, elbows on his knees. "So how'd you end up a guest of the crown, then?"
no subject
"By trusting the wrong people," she said slowly.
"I was at Governor's Harbour. My ship had dropped me off there to negotiate some deals. I was lead to believe that this new merchant, Mr. Dorney, would be a decent man."
She looked Vane straight into the eyes. "He arranged an ambush. One of my mates got killed on the spot. Me they wanted alive, to face a jury later. That was... four days ago, I think."
no subject
"Dorney?" he repeated. "Think I've heard the name, last time we were in Nassau. "Might've even been someone we were considering having dealings with, but now..." Vane shook his head, all amusement gone from his tone.
He looked square at Morgan. "So... are you in the market for some revenge, then?"
no subject
"Does that mean you want part of the action, Vane?"
She didn't know if she could trust Charles more than she trusted anyone else, but she needed his goodwill to at least get back to her ship. If she even had a ship now.
"I had a lot of time to think about this whole shebang, over there. Dorney's not my biggest problem. He's easy to get rid of but he was suggested to me by one of my own men. I have to wonder... is he the one to set it up?"
She hated admitting that her crew wasn't the most loyal. It had been a issue from the start. After the death of her father some of the men had stayed on the Morning Star although they were against a woman captain. Now she was missing. Just who called the orders on her ship at the moment was anyone's guess.
