   The Cheer Up Meme!

Your character is having a bad day (or week, or month, or year, or life). They're in a funk and it's obvious to anyone that comes across them. What's there to do? Why, cheer them up, of course! 

Does your character welcome it? Do they know this strange benefactor trying to make them feel better? Will their efforts work? No matter:

It's time to turn that frown upside down. 

How this works:

Cricket Pate can't speak for every kid out there with pain in his legs or a stutter in his step, nor would he try, but for his part? When the weather is this cold, everything from the hips down hurts like a sonovabitch. Maybe that's what's got this other guy down, or maybe there's something else, but either way he feels it incumbent upon himself to at least try and be good to someone in a similar fix as he is.

He doesn't have a crutch, himself, just the leg braces on both sides from the thighs down, and they're under his trousers but they clink a little when he walks and he can't hide the limp. That, and ice on the sidewalk is about eight times as treacherous for him as for the average young man. So he's working his way over real slow, with a cup of something hot steaming in his right hand, and a little bag in his left.

"Hey," he greets, and boy does that Appalachian accent stand out in New York. "I got coffee and some kinda apple fritter thing. Y'wanna split?"
