Arranged Marriage Turned More To have and to hold, you said, till death do us part, all while the sharp, swinging pendulum of obligation hung overhead. But how could you have truly meant those words? This union has been tainted from the start, forever bearing the chains of an arranged marriage. It would be understandable if you couldn't bear to look at your new life partner, eternal reminder of your stolen future that they are, much less like them. Much less love them... Still, things can change. You could realize that they are in the same boat as you or, that when compared to others around you, they are the lesser of evils. Perhaps you even open up to the idea of a friendship; at the very least, an alliance may be in order to become a power couple in a perilous world. From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. Will you acknowledge this? Can the two of you have a happily ever after - happier than if you'd met in another fashion - or will you hold firm in your distaste? how to play. - Everybody loves "couples forged by less-than-ideal circumstances" tropes! - Comment with your character, prefs, all that good stuff. - Reply to others. - IDEC where you set your threads, it's wide open. Joy was the day when Rhaegar learned of his new baby sister. They'd feared only sons and he'd begun his search for a suitable bride, even if she wasn't a Targaryen. But on the day of his sister's birth, he stops his search and begins preparations for when she is old enough to take her place at his side.

The years pass and he takes his place as King once their father grows far too dangerous to remain in power. But today...today he has a gift for his new bride. Dragon eggs have been found and purchased, just in time for him to present to her in private on their wedding night. He leads her to their new rooms, trusting the precious box is waiting within.

"I have a gift for you."

Her heart is beating an excited rhythm in her chest when her handsome elder brother comes to lead her away. She follows him without question, wearing the traditional colors of the Targaryens - black and red. The fabric is rich against her pale hair and skin, but the black in particular is a shock as she usually chooses gentler hues.

"You needn't have gotten me anything."

She has wanted to marry him since childhood, dreaming of the life they could have together like any lovesick girl. Now her dreams have started to come true and he is gift enough.

At least until she sees the dragon eggs. She gives his arm a small squeeze before hurrying to the table, lifting one of the eggs with open fascination and a strange - almost motherly - affection.

[ general permissions here. very happy with cross-canon/OCs, will merge universes as much as necessary, but for this meme would prefer to come out with something still vaguely fantasy/historic. m/m and m/f fine (we can just...handwave all those historical issues...if it ends up m/m, c'mon they've already got magic why not same-sex marriage in 500AD).

merlin himself isn't exactly royal blood, so this is probably one of two things: either a) this universe actually LIKES magic and so, as a powerful sorcerer, he's the hot new craze to get married off to another kingdom for a power move, or b) he's the short end of the stick for the other person, and is getting married off as a tenuous sign of good will by his kingdom's king, and it's likely merlin's betrothed and their family aren't...super happy with it. open to other ideas you may have! hmu. ]

[Would you accept Ophelia from Hamlet? I'm familiar with BBC's Merlin but it's been years since I've watched any episodes.

Maybe Ophelia is shipped off to Camelot because Hamlet can't decide whether he wants to marry her or not, and her family fears that this wavering taints her good reputation. Uther could promise that in exchange of her generous dowry, he will offer military support. Also maybe Uther thinks that if Merlin has a wife, Arthur starts to see the benefits of a marriage.

I like your ideas, too, if you'd rather have Merlin move to live in Elsinore castle. But I admit I think it might be easiest to move Ophelia to Merlin's canon more.

I really love your idea! Having Ophelia shipped out to Camelot to avoid Hamlet's indecisive butt sounds about right to me. And I love? the concept of Uther doing the double-whammy of "we get a nice dowry" alongside "maybe my son will see how great marriage is". Perfect, honestly.

That all works out great for me! I'm fine with starting at the beginning to sort of feel out their dynamic, and then skipping around as we'd like, or starting later on if you had any specific ideas. Go for it, if you'd like to write the starter! I'll roll with most things and we can always add more ideas as we see what they get into. ]

[ She's usually the first one back in the evenings when each of them finally retire to their shared quarters. Not that she minds. If anything, it's actually a chance to sit somewhere comfortable rather than the increasingly difficult and uncomfortable places she's been hiding herself these days for some highly-craved solitude.

It's... all getting a bit much for her. The longer this absolute mess goes on. She's already had coy looks and personal questions directed at her over the last few weeks. She's mortified; shutting those who ask with such painful looks they're almost embarrassed they asked her. She's not interested. She didn't want any part in any of this and in all honesty, it's just so much easier if she spends her time alone. Even if it is incredibly lonely.

But then again, she's always been incredibly lonely. Arranged marriages don't change that.

And even when Merlin, and his awful knack for managing to find her in her hiding spots, comes across her - he talks her ear off without pausing for breath. If the words he spoke fell magically into blank books, he'd have written libraries by now. It's exhausting, she's exhausted. And all she wants it to curl up in the comfiest chair in the room and just have a hour or two to read before he gets back and she mutely barricades herself in the cupboard again for the night.

Only she's not the first one back. Merlin's come back before she has and she can already feel her shoulders sinking. ]

Oh. [ She pushes the door shut behind her, bites her lip. She's trying not to sound so disappointed, even trying to smile. ] You're back early.
