Born in Madras India, the son of Sir Charles Augustus Moran, CB, Ambassador to Iraq/Persia, John Sebastian Moran was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford before embarking upon a military career. A doctor he was not, but a Retired Colonel in her Majesty's army, he had been, medaled and mentioned in dispatches with some regularity. Moran was the author of Heavy Game of the Western Himalayas and Three Months in the Jungle and it may or may not be whispered in dark corners that he was also the anonymous author of My Nine Nights in a Harem, the majority of copies destroyed by order of the court or discretely kept under pillows or in nightstand drawers.

Freshly returned from his last deployment in Afghanistan by way of India, where a tiger had taken the opportunity to maul him when he crawled into an irrigation ditch to dispatch said man-eater. An infection, caused by the scrape of teeth over this heart, had set in on the return steamer ship. Instead of fleecing fellow passengers at cards, Moran was robbed of a useless nipple. What was one more scar added to that which life had laid upon his flesh? A life where danger was chased and wrestled with to determine which was the stronger. A harlot's blade near a kidney, a bullet lodged in his knee, signs of beatings when he had been a lad, and a hip that ached when the weather turned and it was always changing in the soot-choked skies of the island kingdom.

There in London, fresh off the boat, he had stood at the crossroads. But, instead of crossing paths with a thief who was in the employee of a criminal mastermind, his life playing out in darkness at the changeable whims of a professor that tracked the orbits of heavenly bodies, Moran encountered Doctor Michael Stamford outside of St. Bartholomew. What followed was an introduction to a most remarkable man.

No, he did not mind violin, if Holmes did not mind the cello. Not speaking of days would be restful. Did not say it would allow him time for reading or other pursuits while his health rested and returned. The comment about his watch was most curious.

That was that matter sorted, he supposed. Dr. Stamford had his little irritations-- his relentless cheerfulness (especially when Holmes was feeling down) and his daftness in the face of Holmes' experiments-- but Holmes could not deny that Stamford was a good judge of character and he had certainly brought him an interesting specimen with whom to take up rooms. Holmes had been having a devil of a time and in his way, he had simply put it out of his mind. That was simply his nature-- it was either obsession or utter disregard. But what a surprise, Stamford had cracked that particularly annoying puzzle.

"Well! We shall consider the matter settled, yes? We shall take the rooms at Baker Street tomorrow, if you find them agreeable upon your examination." He said, without troubling himself to explain any of his remarks about Moran's background as surmised by all the little details of his person, nor to wait for Moran himself to give an affirmative answer. He was fascinated with the other man already, the peculiarities of his posture, the places he'd been, the things he might have done, might have seen. Yes, a fascinating little study, this young man who would soon be his live-in colleague.

[Karen's starting to think he doesn't really have a plan. At least not one that he's willing to execute in a timely manner. When he first grabbed her off the street, it was obvious that revenge against Frank was the plan. And after being roughed up a little, she thinks that's his plan. He's going to make Frank watch her die. But when Frank comes, the plan seems to change. The two men fight, and Billy gets the upper hand. He leaves Frank unconscious and takes her with him, fighting and screaming threats the entire way.

It's been a month since that point, and Karen is beyond stir crazy. They're holed up in some remote cabin in a state Karen can't be sure of. She tried keeping track, but he made it near impossible for her to be anything but disoriented. She knows that he probably wants Frank to think she's dead. But a part of her wonders if there's something else there. A reason he's stalling. Because a man hellbent on revenge doesn't just keep a woman like her without a reason. She's too prying, too prone to talking and asking intrusive questions. She picks up on subtle details and uses them like little knives to prod and provoke him. When he lashes out with violence, she's come to the point where she lashes back without any hesitation.

In between rounds of verbal and physical sparring though, there's reluctant peace. They play chess, try to watch the static ridden TV. They cook meals and share wine, and spend hours up at night talking. She gets him to talk about Frank and his family in bits and pieces. And he gets her to talk about her family in return. They don't trust one another, barely can seem to tolerate one another, but there's a sense of attraction that Karen isn't blind to. Enough barbing one liners between them and she's certain he must feel it too.

Don't get her wrong, she loathes him for everything he's done to Frank. She can never forgive him for that, or the things he's involved her in. But the darkness in her, the sharp edges and broken pieces, they recognize the like parts within him. The way they've settled into a tense domestic routine puts her on edge and unsettles her. This is wrong. But she shows nothing but a confident smile as she moves her Queen on the chess board and keeps eye contact with him.]

He's going to kill you. And you know I won't be able to stop him.
