Where a kid can be a kid...or something

The Discovery Zone / Chuck E. Cheese's / Arcade Meme

If you were a kid during the 80s or 90s, I don't have to explain. Everyone remembers those meccas of fun that were awesome, yet somehow still smelled vaguely of stale pizza and shame. Whether you're hanging out in the tubes, jumping in the moon bounce, or shooting some hoops, you're sure to have a blast.

Well, even if you don't, it's not like you can leave. As big as this place is, there seems to be no door. So you might as well just sit back and win some tickets.

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Comment with your characters.
2. Others will reply, rolling the RNG for the scenario.
3. Have shenanigans. Feel free to make wacky crossovers, since you're all stuck in here together.

SCENARIOS:
1. The slide
2. Ball pit
3. Climbing wall
4. Moon bounce
5. The tubes
6. The little viewing bubble
7. Skeeball
8. Hoop shooting
9. Arcade games
10. The claw machine
11. Laser tag
12. Harassing the poor guy in the mascot suit
13. It's your birthday party!
14. For some reason, you work here.
15. Wildcard

[Aerith's eyeing him pretty seriously. She's stubborn, but he's obviously content with staying put.

And she doesn't want to pester him by herself - one of those 'things are easier to do in groups' quirks she never understood until she was part of a group. Now it's a habit she can't break.

Well, she doesn't have to go over there talk to the rat...
]

Oh well, I can just call him over here!

[And without giving her companion a chance to stop her, she waves frantically at the mascot, motioning for them to come over. The person inside held up a hand, as if to say 'just a second', and she gives Cloud a triumphant smile.]

See, I'm sure it gets pretty boring doing the same old song and dance for kids.

What-- H-Hey, why would you do that?

[ Seriously why -- now he's going to have to walk all the way over here in that bulky suit and have some kind of weird conversation with a couple of kids who are definitely too old for this type of thing and it's going to be awkward. For sure.

He really can't argue with her on that last point, though, no matter how obvious it is he'd like to try. Yeah, repetition gets kind of old.

Maybe he should be a little more sympathetic. ]

That's his job. It won't change anything if we just bug him.

[ Oooor not. ]

Oh don't be such a nervous Nellie!

[There she goes, tossing out phrases she only hears Elmyra say. Still, she wags a finger at Cloud, her free hand at her hip as she nags speaks.]

It won't change anything, but even a smile is enough to change someone's day! I see a lot of unhappy people everyday, and simple things like listening to someone can make a whole difference.

[She is sounding way too cheerful, but it's a stance she's adamant on. Aerith hates to see an unhappy face, and if this mascot was having a bad day maybe she could make it better!

Which was a little too positive, but hey a girl can dream, right?

Now her mission of nosiness has turned into one of kindness, and she is determined.
]

Besides, we can tell him it's someone else's birthday, and watch them be surprised with a birthday song! I think they even put some kind of silly hat on them, too.

[Also pranks are a good motive. Innocent fun, of course.]
anonfantry: (oh I just might try)

[ Nervous Nellie...

If he wasn't skeptical before (and he definitely was), Cloud sure is, now. Even if it's pretty tempting, though, he just can't abandon Aerith to face the dancing mascot menace alone.

Who knows what kind of weirdo might've taken up an occupation like this, if he isn't just some poor dumb schmuck on the down and out? There's simply no telling, and since she clearly hasn't thought through all of the worst case scenarios, he'll have to, for her.

It's a dirty job, but someone's got to be the pessimist, here.

Cloud crosses his arms and tries not to look too sullen as he waits beside her. This plan's just getting worse and worse. ]

Sure, I guess.

[ Pranks aren't really on the Cloud-approved list of acceptable pastimes. But there's really no stopping her, now. Why keep fighting it? ]

But won't you get in trouble, if they find out it isn't really somebody's birthday?

[ For the record, complaining about the plan doesn't count as fighting it. ]

Maybe you should just stick with talking to him. Like you said.

[Aerith is doing what she does best - ignoring his grumpiness. The mascot starts over in their direction, and she has a big smile on her face.

She's sure it's just some poor guy forced into this job because of some life event. Maybe he's lost his previous job (the economy has been pretty bad lately), or maybe it's a second job. Could be a teenager bored out of their mind, or even someone who actually enjoys the job of making people smile. So many possibilities!

Naturally, she knows not everyone is all sunshine and rainbows like she tends to be. But she knows how to take care of herself (a good, sharp kick to a certain area tends to help), and it's easy to swallow down any nerves in such a public place. And with a cynical trooper beside her, what could possibly go wrong?
]

Well maybe we won't do the birthday thing then, spoilsport. Talking it is!

[And that's when the person reaches them. The head looks a lot bigger now that they were closer, but she just grins up at them.]

Hi! We thought you might want a break, and I was actually a little curious about your job...

[The mascot nods, and Aerith wonders if she'll be able to hear them through their headpiece.]

Is it not hot in there?

[The mascot makes a 'so-so' motion with their hand, and she nods seriously. This was going to be an extremely one sided conversation.]

Fine.

[ That's one bullet dodged, at least, which is better than his usual rate of success. So Cloud manages to mellow out just a little, as he watches (while trying to pretend he's not watching) that giant, clothes-wearing rodent come lumbering over.

Not too close, there, buddy. That's right, just keep your distance, and nobody gets hurt.

(Or kicked in the junk, which, actually, Aerith, is a back-up plan he'd approve of if he knew. Though for safety reasons only, of course.)

Their conversation is passingly interesting, to whatever part of him is still a little sympathetic as a fellow anonymous keeper of the peace, but he'll just be over here shuffling his feet and crossing his arms and remaining generally unhelpful for the duration. And hoping she doesn't plan to try this with every mascot she sees; he notes several others, trapped in costumes to varying degrees of equally terrifying, wandering among the crowds. ]

[Her conversation with the mascot is going pretty well - mainly she's asking them questions and they nod or shake their scarily massive head.]

Doesn't that thing fall off?

[She's leaning closer to the mysterious mascot, studying the head closely. The person underneath seems to chuckle, shaking their head vigorously to show it doesn't. Pleased, and satisfied, she leans back from them.]

I guess I'll stop bugging you now. I'm sure you have a lot of work to do!

[The mascot nods, then holds out their arms for a ~BIG HUG~. One that Aerith gladly gives. Sadly, they couldn't totally remove the head (it would scare all the children!), and when they did speak it was so muffled she couldn't understand them. But they were a good sport in the end.

After they pat her on the head, they go off to a group of rambunctious kids. Aerith turns to her companion, her expression a little bit smug.
]

See? They weren't bothered! Nothing to worry about, and all's well in the world.

[Really, her curiosity is sated, but there's a slightly evil gleam in her eyes when she speaks next.]

Now to talk to the others!
