Honestly, he was never particularly attached to her. She was a child of the age of reason, young and vibrant, with eyes set firmly on her future and little interest in dwelling on the past. Him? He was a product of the old world, of family feuds that burned entire countries and grudges as old as vintage wine, of London smog and children's nursery rhymes. His place was on the battlefields old enough to be shunned by the modern world as fairy tales, in the dark and unexplored corners of the Earth. He visited her once in a while, true, but they were only brief affairs in times of conflict. Even taking her side when she announced her right for independence was nothing more than a temporary alliance; he showed as much when the last shot was fired and he ran back to Europe, eager to find another secret war to fight in.

But times changed. Maps grew old and worthless, burned and replaced by newly charted ones. A war between power and freedom split a young nation in two. Old legends gave way to new ones. Somewhere in Maine, a young author heard scratching in the walls and carved the messages they told him into books and legends. His visits grew longer, more involved. Nights became busier. Stories piled up on library shelves. They maintained that their bond was a superficial one - that she was too young for him, too hopeful and rooted in humankind's future to be a good companion for an old story like him - but the truth was that by the time of the great war, he knew every inch of her body better than he knew his own.

And this night should have been exactly like many previous ones - her body trapped between the bed and his weight, her legs wrapped around his waist, her nails leaving faint marks on his back every time he thrust into her - but something inside him felt differently. Maybe there was a passion in this encounter that he didn't notice; maybe he realized that even without attachment, there was a certain fondness for her innocent hopefulness and desire for a better something. But when her moans turned into a scream that slowly changed into a content whimper, he didn't simply laugh and keep going the way he usually did. No, he leaned closer and, with his lips pressed against her ear and his voice just loud enough to be decipherable, whispered.
