Mai was the sort of person who hated to stay in any one place for too long unless she herself explicitly chose the place. Her aunt's flower shop had been better tolerated than where she had been before but she still wasn't that keen on it. No, it hadn't been a place she had chosen but a place she had run to when everything else around her fell apart.

Here though? Here was a home she had chose. It couldn't be called a lavish place but she was more than happy to move in. And yet moving brought the inevitable - boxes. Boxes of all shapes and sizes, the contents of which she could only guess at after a bit. Whether they were hers or Seifer's she really had no clue by the end.

It took a solid two or more days of work in bits and chunks here and there but finally, finally, the last box was done and Mai sags into whatever comfortable sitting surface has been uncovered by it.

"Next time I do this, I'm just burning everything. It's quicker."

Ah, December in Montana. That means snow, which Kenzie is pretty happy about. Everything is covered in a cold blanket of white and it also means that if it snows enough there's no excuse for her to be dragged out of the house to go to town away from all her projects. Beth is still out at work, so that leaves Kenzie time to work out something. A little surprise, you might say. She hefts a saw to her shoulder and then trudges out into the trees that border the farm, her breath puffing out in great white clouds as she goes. It takes her an hour, but she finally finds what she's looking for and sets to work on cutting the damn thing down. She considers, for a moment, trying to haul it back through the snow by herself, then shrugs and shifts into Crinos. The tree is set on her shoulder as easily as if it were a twig and she trudges back towards the house, leaving huge footprints behind that soon start to fill in as more softly drifting snow begins to drop down from the sky to add to the already extant blanket.

At the edge of the property, she shifted back into her human form and dragged the tree the rest of the way, just in case someone had come by to check on them. Thankfully, the number of nosy neighbors out here was. Real small. The tree is maneuvered onto the back porch where it gets a brush down to shake off the snow and any other debris, then it gets a little trim to make it look presentable. Finally, she hauls it inside, through the mud room and the kitchen and into the cozy living room where a wood fire was still sputtering gamely, despite not having been fed in the last couple hours. Then it's off to the closet under the stairs where she's been assembling her other provisions, mostly ordered off the internet or through helpful folks at the Sept.

Christmas lights. Tinsel. Bulbs. A star. It's the whole nine yards as far as Kenzie is concerned. She hasn't really had a Christmas since she was kid. Before her mom left and before her dad crawled into a bottle. She'd had a couple with her pack, but... this felt different. The rest of the afternoon was spent in busy preparation. Soon, the tree is ready in all of its glory and Kenzie steps back to admire her handiwork. There are even presents piled under it already! She's not usually this fine or delicate but... it's worth it. Then off to the kitchen--she knows Beth usually gets home around this time and she's got to be ready.

When the front door opens Kenzie is there, beaming, to offer Beth a hot chocolate and a kiss on the cheek.

"Welcome home, babe!"

Beth loves winter, now that she isn't living directly in it. Sure, it's colder than she's ever experienced, but she has more than enough sweaters and coats and cute mittens to keep warm--not to mention a girlfriend who'll turn into an enormous pile of fluff the moment Beth starts to shiver. And then there's the fireplace in their snug little house, and the piles of blankets on their bed, and the fact that her truck heats up quickly despite the cold...

It's nice. So nice. And to what she assumes is Kenzie's absolute delight, it's so cold that there's no reason to go anywhere on her days off; she's content to do her daily chores and then curl up with Kenzie someplace warm. Maybe go for a walk on their property if they need something more.

What she's not loving so much is work, at the moment, where the brief lull after Thanksgiving has turned into another big rush as Christmas approaches. So much baking stuff, and so many people. It's enough to make her want to take a vacation from here through January. But this is her first real job, and she's going to do it right--and anyway, after Thanksgiving week, she's pretty sure nothing's ever going to be that bad again.

She takes the mug of hot cocoa from Kenzie gratefully, kissing her back with a tired smile. "What's this for? The pilot light's not out again, is it?"

Kenzie smiles brightly at Beth over her own hot chocolate, though the expression falters a little at Beth's response.

"What? No! I can fix that." Now she can fix it. After the first time. Shut up Beth. She takes a sip of her cocoa.

"But yeah. It's a surprise. Once you get your shoes off, I need you to close your eyes and let me bring you into the living room. No peeking!" Kenzie stands there, hand on her hip (and very cozy in her sweater) until Beth obeys, then grabs her by hand to tug her into the living room. She's gentle though. No spilled cocoa.

"Okay. You can open 'em." Oh yeah, Kenzie also hung stockings over the hearth. That have Kenzie and Beth's names on them in awkward needlepoint.
