"Hey. Did you see that? Because either I'm fucking insane, which I'm not discounting, or that was a fucking ghost."

No, Martin has no clue who Stiles is. He's just been studying for so long that his cigarette need has practically become the DTs and he swears he saw something and is SO not going to go crazy alone.

As he sulks at the rain he glanced over at Sabriel, "Mind if I smoke while we wait out what is apparently going to be the next thirty nine days, ten hours?" It seems like a biblical level of flood to his biology final, anyway.

She'd been called worse things, Stephanie thinks as she turns to voice that had called out to her.

"Crud, thanks." Said with a grateful smile as she walks back, hand out to take the USB from her saviour. "You're a life saver."

He grins, lopsided and wry, as he sees it in her hand. No attempts at tossing for this geek. "If I had a penny for every USB I've lost I could pay off a month of student loans, I swear. Martin."

The last, probably obviously, an introduction.

"At this point," he says slowly, looking up from the frenzy of paper everywhere, "anything is possible."

Not that he'd seen what Martin had, but he's been holed up in this section of the library for what feels like days, and sometimes it feels like the walls are crawling. (The patrolling librarians haven't helped, what with their tendency to just appear: They take the whole 'Silence in the Library' thing too far.)

Scrubbing at his face, he makes to stand.

"You know what, I don't think I can keep staring at these textbooks a minute longer. Let's check it out."

"Fuck yes, anything that isn't staring at books for another... What day is it? God I need a cigarette."

He stands as well and pushes his chair back, "It was over there. Martin, by the way." He heads back towards the English lit section with long strides of his gangly form.

It's that time of year. Any colder, and it would be hail. Small favours.

"The weather does have a sense for the dramatic,"she says, smiling slightly.

She'd left her umbrella at her flat this morning, thinking that it wouldn't be so bad, but apparently the sky had other intentions. She'd risk it, but didn't want to chance her notes getting wet and running.

She hums, before shaking her head. "I don't mind. You wouldn't set off any smoke alarms here at least."

Just one of the reasons she preferred living off campus, rather than in the dorms.

"You'll probably be done before the storm lets up, and the library's open all night."

He lights up with the quick, near frantic movements of an addict who has been sans addiction for much longer than he's used to, but between classes and the rain it took until he got under the awning for a chance at a smoke.

"Doesn't it just?" he agrees, giving her a lop-sided smile in return once the sweet, sweet tobacco has hit his lungs, "It's like it's taunting us. There, the library and the chance to keep our papers safe. Just a few short yards away, but here we are; too far to run for it without risking utter disaster."

So he was (probably) exaggerating things. It's his final paper for his second to last class of his master's degree, he has the right to be dramatic.

"The amount of hours put onto them could probably pay off the rest." She bashfully joked pocketing the thumb drive before fumbling through her own introduction, having a hard time talking properly to the cute stranger. "Steph... Stephanie... Rogers... I'm Steph Rogers."

"Tomorrow morning for me." He heads off after Martin, making sure to shove his laptop into his backpack. Not going to leave that out on the off chance some guy tries to steal it.

The shelves are marked by numbers to mark out different journals and papers, not that Stiles had needed to use these particular publications. Literature is not really his thing.

"And it's Stiles."

It feels quieter there, but not that quiet. If he had to hazard a guess, he would say someone was moving around nearby, but where?
