More than arranged
![]() Arranged Marriage Turned More To have and to hold, you said, till death do us part, all while the sharp, swinging pendulum of obligation hung overhead. But how could you have truly meant those words? This union has been tainted from the start, forever bearing the chains of an arranged marriage. It would be understandable if you couldn't bear to look at your new life partner, eternal reminder of your stolen future that they are, much less like them. Much less love them... Still, things can change. You could realize that they are in the same boat as you or, that when compared to others around you, they are the lesser of evils. Perhaps you even open up to the idea of a friendship; at the very least, an alliance may be in order to become a power couple in a perilous world. From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. Will you acknowledge this? Can the two of you have a happily ever after - happier than if you'd met in another fashion - or will you hold firm in your distaste? how to play. - Everybody loves "couples forged by less-than-ideal circumstances" tropes! |

meeting up in gresit except also they're kinda engaged y/n
He'd never been a true member of the Speakers - he could never carry out his family's work while bound to a vow of nonviolence - he traveled with them for a time afterward. Once he was old enough to fend for himself he moved from caravan to caravan, acting as a bodyguard as Wallachia grew more and more deeply afraid of and cruel to what it did not understand. After a few too many arguments about the use of violence against people who attacked the caravans he had left altogether. Run off to try to drink himself to death.
And now they were in Gresit, because Sypha wanted to save people who would only ever hate her. And because he had been hungry enough to break into a fortified city in search of breakfast. ]
The fuck are you doing? You know you can't stay here. [ He's grown rougher since they last met. ] You know what they'll do to you.
[ If he sounds almost a little desperate, that's because he is. He's already seen the closest thing he has to family (because the engagement may have technically been broken when the Belmont family was, but she's still the only living person who he can still claim some sort of connection to) turned into a nice lawn ornament today. He's not going to see her torn apart by a mob, as well. ]
ugh it's perfect
Trevor's coarser with her than he used to be, and she immediately resents it. Her eyes narrow. ]
I am making myself useful instead of running from things I don't like.
[ Perhaps they weren't immediately in love upon being presented to each other, but she had liked him, grown to care about him. Even dared to think that there was a chance she would love him. It hurt when he left.
At the time it felt more personal than it probably was.
It would be a lie to say he's never crossed her mind when she's thought of the scholar and the hunter, now understanding why the match was made in the first place, but the surprise of actually being with him again makes her chest feel oddly tight. ]
The people of Gresit are not what scares me.
[ He's close enough that she can catch his scent. A drunken brawl, the bottom of a tankard. ]
What happened to you?

Nothing happened.
[ He hates this. He's woken up this morning with nothing to lose, and he'd been perfectly fine with that. And then the world had seen fit to remind him harshly that he did have something left, when the Elder had told him that Sypha was believed dead and begged him to retrieve her body, for old times' sake. He doesn't like having something left. It's not the comfort that it might have once been, it's nothing but worry that turns into anger immediately. ]
What the hell scares you, then, if it's not being barred in this fucking house while it burns? A thousand people tearing the skin from your bones, maybe? Being tied at each limb to a horse and pulled apart? They'll do it. All of it. To you and to Arn and to your grandfather and everyone there. [ The only fucking people he fucking knows, and they're all going to die at nightfall. ]

He was still surprised that Alec Lightwood had stepped forward, offering himself instead of his sister. Which, after exchanging letters and having the Clave approve it, he'd found out that the Lightwoods were originally going to offer their only daughter. It was a noble act, taking her place. Especially since he doubted that Alec was interested in men. He supposed he would have to find out for sure.
Finally he was led to the door of the room and it was opened, the guide stepping back so he could go in. "Thank you." He said, bowing his head slightly before walking into the room. No one else was there yet and he wondered how long it would be before Alec arrived.

As he wrote letters and secretly campaigned to get the Clave to choose him as the intended offering, he was relieved that Magnus seemed willing to consider a male Shadowhunter. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe Magnus wouldn't mind his preference if he was willing to have a husband instead of a wife.
But that was a foolish thought. It was a political marriage. It wasn't meant to be anything romantic. Magnus probably wouldn't want to have anything to do with him after the ceremony. Why would he? Shadowhunters had been treating warlocks like monsters for centuries. Alec would be lucky if Magnus could stand the sight of him long enough to go through the meetings and the ceremony.
At least Izzy helped him look presentable for the meeting, choosing a button down shirt that felt too tight but she promised brought out the color of his eyes. She'd given him a hug and promised to maim Magnus if he hurt her big brother. After reminding her that he could take care of himself, he hurried to the room that had been set aside for the meeting. He arrived only a few minutes after Magnus had promised to visit, but he needed to take a deep breath to steady his nerves before entering the room. As he stepped inside, he had to force himself not to jump as the door thumped shut behind him.
"I apologize for being late." Would Magnus care why he'd been late? Maybe. He'd seemed sympathetic to Alec's need to protect Izzy. "My sister was checking on me before you arrived."

But now...
Now, he can't help the way his heart skips a beat when she walks toward him, or how he wants to touch her soft skin.
Putting down the lamb near her mother, he walks over to the fence watching his wife. For his own reasons, he hasn't consummated the marriage, but he's hoping to convince her otherwise.

That is in part why she hasn't questioned the fact that he hasn't taken his due as her husband. She thinks he senses just how displeased she is by the arrangement, and that perhaps he is gentleman enough not to push.
But recently - how solicitous he acts, as though trying in his own strange way to court her. How his eyes seem to follow her as she moves about their distant but common lives, drawing a deep blush to her cheeks. Prickling her skin like fever.
She is just returning from the market, carrying a meager purchase of necessities their farm can't provide, and she finds him at the fence, watching her. Her steps falter, her hand pressing to her middle. Swallowing hard, she greets him. "Heer -" No. Not Heer Barnes. He's her husband, she should allow him some measure of familiarity. "James."
