[ It's been five long months since Gavin's stint in Hong Kong ended - just when he had come to like the thought, to not-so-secretly hope, that he would be staying for good. When he'd started to make plans for a future there, a future with Wulong. Instead, it had been back to Detroit, back to the DPD, to the same old Central precinct where his old desk and old squabbles awaited him.

Five months of staying in touch via video chats and texts and even old-fashioned phone calls, of trying to share another's life as good as they could with eleven hour of time difference between them. Stolen moments, with one usually at work while the other was enjoying his evening off.

Gavin's not bitter about it... Okay, that's a lie, he is kind of bitter about it but just this once he's done his best to be mature about it - something which seems to still baffle Captain Fowler after five months. It's not easy but he owes it to Wulong not to throw away his shot, if they've got to be separated he can't fuck it up and let it be for naught.

Tonight's one of those nights where the loneliness is particularly stark. Outside, Detroit is caught in the grip of winter and inside, Gavin has been regularly checking his phone for a response from Wulong. He'd said he would be out of touch all day but still... They've rarely gone this long without so much as a single short text.

He's sitting on the couch in comfy sweatpants and a ratty old police academy hoodie, listlessly going through the channels and only growing more irritable, debating exactly how pathetic it would be to go to bed at 9 p.m. just to forget how lonely he feels tonight. He's just fallen asleep in front of the TV when his door rings and it only turns his already sour mood even darker. He really isn't in the mood to deal with missionaries or door-to-door salesmen or his fucking drunken neighbors. He's not in the mood to people, stat.

He yanks open the door, still bleary-eyed and not registering who's standing there. ] What the fuck do you want?!
