The kid in question can be whatever character tags yours, or you can enlist that character to help you wrangle your new NPC rugrat. Suit yourselves. Have fun!

Daryl had been taken to The Academy at a very young age--so young, in fact, that he had no memory of any other place. Cut off from the outside world--and even from the rest of the academy apart those who were part of the secret project meant to turn orphaned, abandoned, or otherwise unwanted children into cold and calculating war mages--Daryl was raised in isolation until one of his handlers, known as Dr Mulligan, had a change of heart.

Daryl never knew whether it was a crisis of conscience, or some magical alignment shift that caused Dr Mulligan to betray the acedemy, and break him out of confinement. Thanks to the Mind Blank spell that Dr Mulligan placed upon him, Daryl didn't even remember his own name, let alone Dr Mulligan's heroic self-sacrifice: giving his life to lead the Academy's mages away from Daryl as they fled. As far as Daryl was concerned, his first memory was of the sapphire tiefling girl who found him on the road outside of the Empire with the letters DARYL stitched onto his knapsack.

He didn't even remember learning magic. But he instinctively knew how to cast spells, and had nearly perfect recal of anything he saw or read; and anyone who looked closely enough might notice that he wore an enchanted amulet around his neck, just like Caleb. Dr Mulligan had given him to prevent the Academy from locating him, but of course Daryl couldn't remember that. Nor could he remember the Academy's indoctrination. He was just a sweet, innocent young lad with a knack for the arcane.

And he liked Jester right away.
