Arranged turned more
![]() Arranged Marriage Turned More To have and to hold, you said, till death do us part, all while the sharp, swinging pendulum of obligation hung overhead. But how could you have truly meant those words? This union has been tainted from the start, forever bearing the chains of an arranged marriage. It would be understandable if you couldn't bear to look at your new life partner, eternal reminder of your stolen future that they are, much less like them. Much less love them... Still, things can change. You could realize that they are in the same boat as you or, that when compared to others around you, they are the lesser of evils. Perhaps you even open up to the idea of a friendship; at the very least, an alliance may be in order to become a power couple in a perilous world. From that innocent decision or sense of self-preservation, a new feelings sparks. Something like affection. Something, you realize in the wake of speeding heartbeats, like love. Will you acknowledge this? Can the two of you have a happily ever after - happier than if you'd met in another fashion - or will you hold firm in your distaste? how to play. - Everybody loves "couples forged by less-than-ideal circumstances" tropes! |

And her.
Beth finds out in Dawn's office when she's summoned there and handed a dress that looks like it might've been worn to a homecoming dance before the world ended. It's pale blue, the short skirt fluffy with netting and the bodice lacy, and for a moment, she loves the sight of it.
"Get dressed," Dawn tells her, and there's something in her voice that Beth wants to trust. It shifts into something ugly as soon as she opens her mouth again. "You're not getting married in scrubs."
"What?" But what becomes clear when she remembers she passed the new guy--Burke, right? Burke--on the way in. "No. No, I'm not--"
Beth does her best to dig her heels in, to change Dawn's mind. If you want someone to marry him so badly, why don't you? But they both know the answer to that, one that makes Beth's stomach clench up tight. Dawn's in charge here, and she's not going to do something that risks changing that. And Beth's pretty, even if she's too thin to make the homecoming dress fit quite right--even if the beating she took from Dawn has left stitches on her forehead and the promise of a scar when it's healed. Beth's pretty and eighteen and a virgin, if you're really technical about whether hand jobs count. Of course she's the one on the chopping block.
One way or another, Beth ends up in the dress, with her hair falling smooth and soft around her hard stare. And Dawn brings Burke back into the room, yanking one of Beth's hands from her sides and setting it into Burke's. "You want to go through the vows?" she asks, and it's clear enough she's not asking Beth. "I'm not ordained, but I have the script down."

Maybe they were saved by being too far away from the general population to do shit.
They have guns though. They’ve been hunting runaway science experiments for the better part of two years, and they know how to kill things that should have stayed dead twenty clips of ammo ago. They find scattered remains of the population, civilians who have somehow managed to survive, and Butler holds enough control of the men that things don’t turn wild. It’s easier to just keep moving though. It gets tricky to find stores to replenish weapons and food and clothes, but the world is only picked clean if you’re looking for the oblivious. If you aren’t willing to charge into danger.
By the time they find the hospital, and the audible group holed up there, Burke and the men are tired. A place to sleep steady, where they aren’t the only ones on guard, that sounds nice enough. They’re still the best though, and that means they make demands.
Surprisingly, none of them mention women. Yet-
He’s not that far gone that he’s going to say no.
He doesn’t have a tux or suit, and the most casual thing that will fit him that they can find is a brown leather jacket. Better than the stained and bloody tactical gear. He hears his Ma’s voice in his ear, the way she pops up when he knows he’s far too tired for this shit, telling him that he should do better by this girl and give her a ring.
Ma was dead twelve years, and that makes it easier to step into the room without an offer.
She’s pretty, and the dress isn’t that wrong on her. It looks good. Burke’s hands dwarf hers, as he wraps calloused from fingers around her sweaty palms.
“Vows,” he says, with a nod towards Beth, feeling the need to do things proper even if nothing about this whole situation was. “Long as she wants ‘em.”

"I want the vows," she finally mutters. They won't mean much, but at least he'll have to make all the old promises about taking care of her. Loving and cherishing and giving a damn, offering a life that isn't just about taking what he wants, no matter what it costs her in the process.
And if it means another couple minutes spent unmarried, just in the process of getting married, so much the better.
Dawn's pulling a worn book from her desk and coming back over, thumbing through it in search of the right page. It looks like a Bible, Beth realizes, or a prayer book, though she can't help but wonder whose it was before--it's not easy to picture Dawn having any interest in God. Once she finds the page she's looking for, she says, "We'll skip this dearly beloved crap. Beth, repeat after me."
And that's how Beth is led through the words, staring down at their hands the whole time. (God, his hands are big. All of him is--he has to be a foot taller than her, maybe more, and easily twice her weight. If she has to kill him to keep him from touching her, too, she's going to need her knife.) "I, Beth, take you, Burke, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is--" She swallows. "This is my solemn vow."

When it comes round to his turn, he says the words a little more halting, a little less sure of himself than Beth might be. He isn't used to copying what other people say, and even those short sentences lead to little pauses in his brain. Not that it would come off shy; he just sounds gruff and spits out the words with no sign of tenderness.
"I, Burke, take you, Beth, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my vow."
A kiss would be traditional at this point. Maybe she's expecting it. But Burke does not make a move, does not lean in, simply stands there, looking at Beth, waiting for what happens next. It was pretty sudden, so it wasn't like she was a girl he'd been dying to marry and needed to jump right away.

The duties of a ruler were many and varied to say the least. As such things like love or preference were often put to the side in favor of gains in the name of politics or diplomacy. Of course one of the many tools in that kind of world was naturally the concept of Alliances through mariage.
Sinbad had avoided that for quite a while but in the end even he had to resort to such a method of securing more power to protect his people and the seven seas Alliance from external threats.
Still it wasn't like he went into it, expecting the worst. He was open minded after all and willing to give the whole endeavor a chance. Sinbad knew almost nothing about the bride to be and that was also in a sense kind of exciting. Diving in to the unknown like that. What would she be like? Her likes. Her fears. Her tastes. He had seen some images of her. Paintings sold to him by traders from her lands. For quite a high price no less showing just how valuable she was to her people. That actually had made the pill easier to swallow.
If it was a tyrant then even if she was the most breathtaking beauty in the world in charge of the strongest army, he still would have refused.
And yet here was now, leaning over a balcony overlooking his capital, his people. Countless lights dotting the land before him as he watched on with a satisfied smile, the curtains behind him rustling for only a moment to signal the presence of another in his bed chamber.
"Felt like getting some fresh air?" He asked with a demure smile.
