It's been a few days since she left the motel, left Frank still covered in bandages and looking like hell but beginning to recover, pretty much back to getting around on his own, which Karen expected anyway. He's the kind of man who can take a hell of a lot of punishment and get back up again. She's got a couple of those in her life. She didn't want to leave but certain friends of hers would have started getting awfully worried if she was off the grid too long, which would have led to a lot of awkward questions and covering up for what she'd been doing.

After a couple of days life takes on some sense of normalcy again, but Frank is on her mind nearly every moment and it's a relief when they arrange to meet again. She gets to the restaurant a few minutes early, taking a cab this time instead of her car, wearing jeans and a college sweatshirt instead of her more typical clothes, trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. Mostly people are too drunk or hungover here to take much notice, or on their way to one of those states. Karen orders black coffee and sits in a booth near the back, drinking it slowly because she's already jittery enough.

[Pandora had come into the Denny's to find a quiet place to study and have a late night dinner, and she'd only gotten more absorbed in her work when the stranger at the next table ordered a small buffet and scarfed it down with the urgency of a starving woman. She jumped in her chair at hearing her question, ears standing straight up.]

Um, p-pancakes. With blueberry syrup.

[She blinked a few times, then hugged her arms in front of plate, trying to shield it from those hungry eyes.]

It's the first thing I've had since breakfast.

It had been a long evening at work followed by some fun drinking Guinness and playing darts. Ryan had had to be his usual boring, responsible self and go home with some lame ass excuse about work the next day. Julian wasn’t ready to go back to his empty apartment and from the looks of this Denny’s no one else did either.

He spotted an attractive man sitting alone with a hand on his face. Irritated with the crowd, coffee, or starting his hangover, it was hard to tell why. However, Julian was still buzzing enough to go over and find out. Flopping down in the booth across from the stranger, he flashed a grin and nodded toward the man’s coffee mug. “Wishing there was something stronger in it?”
