The Painful Secret Pining Meme

You've been with them for a long time - years, perhaps, maybe even their whole life. More than that, you served as a true friend and supporter. No one could be as dedicated as you are, and you're content to stay in the shadows and let them shine if it just means you can stay by their side a little longer.

But you're not a perfect saint or a martyr of friendship. There are somewhat selfish undertones to your loyalty. You love them.

You feel like you’ve loved them forever, yet while it’s a great affection - no, “great” is probably not enough - in your heart, these feelings are your secret, kept away from everyone…possibly from the object of your desire themself! After all, you couldn’t burden them with anything like that. So, you’ll allow your own emotions to come in second place.

Of course, you haven’t allowed yourself to figure out how this could come back to haunt you in the end, could you? What about when your love moves on to someone who’s “more than a friend?” They won’t need you as much any more. Can you take into account the moment when you snap and can’t hold back the truth any more? And even if you’re really “together,” others won’t know if you keep your relationship under lock and key, and you’ll have to endure others approaching your lover.

Then again, the shoe could be on the other foot. You could be the side being pined after. Will you ever realize your friend’s feelings; if you do, can you return them? After you are certain that you do, will it be too late? Can one burst of passion lead you both to something that changes your relationship forever?

Basically, it’s a meme about (one-sided) love one friend has for another over a long time. Devotion, angst, all that.
Thread out withheld desires, stoic facades, attempts at leaving this all behind, anger, awkwardness, breaking down, confessions, and all that.
Comment with your character and preferences. You might want to include your smut/no smut status.

[ She'd made it to earth by the skin of her teeth. For a long time Koriand'r wasn't sure that she ever would. Word had been spreading throughout the empire for months that Voltron was dealing serious blow after serious blow, but while Zarkon was in command no one dared shared those views too loudly.

That was how she'd first gleamed a chance for escape, two guards standing outside her door exchanging idle, bored gossip in somewhat uneasy tones. Still, it seemed an impossible thing to hope for. What were the odds she'd be anywhere near the same area as Voltron when an opportunity to escape presented itself? No, she had to bide her time a bit longer. Not until after Voltron had disappeared and returned again, not until after the Galra had been splintered, and the battle cruiser she was held on was assimilated into the Fire of Purification did another chance come. In the ensuing fight Starfire was able to take advantage of the chaos and managed to flee into space. The Galra could not survive in such a hostile environment without a breathing apparatus, but Koriand'r was under no such restrictions. After an involuntary close encounter with heavy debris, she'd crash landed on the planet below and was found by the Garrison, where she was taken in for study and to verify her status as a non-threatening presence on the planet.

Thad had been some time ago. Weeks, and weeks, and weeks had passed since then. No visitors aside from authorized personnel at first, and then finally the princess of Altea, the paladins of Voltron. Once Kori's identity was verified and it was established that she meant no harm to the people of Earth... then and only then had she been allowed to walk free- under observation, of course.

It was strange to think about how far she'd come. To experience such a shift in the attitudes of the people around her, at first Starfire (as she's now called by many) hadn't known what to do with so much... kindness.

"We do not have this word on my planet." She'd explained to the dumbstruck paladins. They'd taken it upon themselves rather quickly to rectify THAT, and the Tamaranean is glad for it now. Over the passing months she's opened up, blossoming in the newfound peace and freedom, building bonds with the team and then branching out to others- anyone who would humor her for even just a bit. Friendship might have been a new concept, but it's one she's taken to with an insatiable ferocity.

Lance and Hunk most of all, having been the most welcoming and the most readily willing to make time for her. It's the former that she's seeking out now, a question on her mind as of late as she's spent more and more time around the survivors and refugees turned normal civilians again. ]

Lance, a question, if I may, please?

[ Always good to be polite, just in case she's interrupting something important, like bonding with Red, or allowing himself to become lost in his thoughts, or... ah, well, other... things...? Maybe? She hopes she's not interrupting, in any case... ]

[ Him doing the pining seems really interesting. Maybe feeling inadequate as an android to be a human's lover, or to another android because he used to be a deviant hunter. Or he doesn't know how to deal with/understand/accept his new feelings? Or you throw me your ideas. ]

[To be honest, this meme might work much better with Jimmy being the one pined after. If only because- if he's the one doing the pining- there's NO WAY his feelings have remained a secret for very long at all. So I'm down for one of either scenario:

A.) Jimmy is oblivious to his friend/acquaintances pining

or

B.) Jimmy is the one pining and he has already confessed at least once (if not several times) but your character keeps rejecting/ignoring/avoiding his advances.]

[Jingyi and the others can’t stop talking about the scary headless corpse. But it’s fine, their camp is far enough away from the seniors that they could stay up til 10 (!!!) gossiping if they needed to. The night is cool, dark with cricket-cries. Sizhui finds himself breaking away from the group momentarily; he tells the others he’s going to report to the seniors. And he does, seeking out a white-robed figure, making sure they’re unoccupied.

Lan Sizhui draws close enough to offer a respectful salute.]

Hanguang-jun. We’ve made camp without any problems.

[Sizhui pauses, running through what he wants to say next in his mind. He feels poorly about having picked a time where Hanguang-jun was away from Zewu-jun to approach- it’s inappropriate to harbour such ulterior motives- but he wants to talk about something quite personal, so he hopes Zewu-jun will understand.]

….do you… will you play Enquiry tonight?

[Hanguang-jun has a habit of playing Enquiry. It’s not just for their qin lessons; for years he’s ended them with a specific refrain, a plaintive thing like a cry in the darkness. It’s beyond Sizhui’s skills to decipher. He only knows that Hanguang-jun is searching for something, and likes playing Enquiry on the road.

Sizhui has been busy for many months with other things- Lan disciple things, they’ve started going on unsupervised night-hunts- and..... he hasn’t heard what he’s come to find familiar, that’s all. ~~(He misses Enquiry time with Father.)~~ ]
