[ it's been a long time, he thinks, since he last believed in magic.

oh, magic, so far as the doctor knew, was everywhere else. so many sights to see, so many wonders to behold — but that was all out there, wasn't it? among the stars, dancing about new planets : the universe, now, that was magical. and yet, there was always room for a surprise — to be proven wrong, to be shown that there was something else, well, there was no furtherance in discovery without a little humble pie now and again.

he meets her during the in - between. in those quiet, stoic moments where he travels on his own. fists in deep pockets and coat trailing behind him on the wind. something — off, something not quite right. he might have known it, with the hell the TARDIS had raised since his arrival ; instead, he simply accepts it, as a lurch or two. nothing to write home about. no reason to panic. at least —

there it is again. that word. magic. he explains rather quickly that he's just passing through. ( a flash of blank paper, the ancient credentials of a historian briefly flashing before untrained eyes — but nothing gets past her, does it? ) he never anticipates a naysayer. sorry — what did you say your name was? he questions, but his eyes are alight with promise. it's the bright ones that make the grey areas less so.

the danger happens very suddenly. his hearts beat in quick unison, like flitting and fidgeting fingers over strings. he goes for her hand, candlelight flickering and the wind exhaling through trees. the doctor squeezes gently, nodding his head with wide, insistent eyes as he says simply : ]

— Follow me!
