Unfortunately some of the townspeople had recognized that she bore the seven bells of a necromancer, and either didn't recognize or didn't care that she wore the Abhorsen's surcoat. Most had backed away fearfully, but one had pulled out a dagger, and Sabriel lifted her hands in a placating gesture and speaking in as reassuring a tone as she could.
She was a tall, skinny eighteen year old with an unhealthy pallor- nothing too threatening, if you ignored the armor, sword, and seven necromantic bells worn in a bandolier.]
Please, I mean no harm. I am an Abhorsen, and I'm looking for- [Her words were cut off when the man lunged at her, and Sabriel sidestepped and shoved him, sending him into the mud. She tries to keep the exasperation out of her next words.]
Please, be reasonable. What's coming is not something you can fight- but I am sworn to defend you against it.
[It was tempting to use magic- not to hurt the man, but to blind him or immobilize him, to make it entirely clear that she could hurt him, but didn't want to- but she'd seen the fear in their faces at the bells, and frightening them more would be stupid.
And now guardsmen were circling, the tips of their spears pointed at her.]

things are rotten here but he can't tell from what yet, and it's difficult to put a finger on exactly what it is.
he's avoided the church wholesale (no need to open that pandora's box, for lack of better terminology) but he's making his way through dark alleys he spots and hears a... ruckus. a group of townspeople, one with a weapon drawn, against...
well, he recognizes the bells from some of the books at the manor. necromancy. still, as much as he dislikes the mere idea of it, that's no reason to go around stabbing people unprovoked. he can tell also that she's not retaliating, which is... perhaps surprising, perhaps not. he's never encountered a necromancer in person before. ]
First time for everything. You really need to learn to leave well enough alone.
[ it's muttered to himself as his hand drops and he glides his fingertips along the handle of his whip. he hears the tail end of the conversation and that's interesting to say the least. he's heard of the helper necromancers too. the man lunges forward and trevor acts, the crack of the whip in the air foretelling the fact that his dagger clatters to the cobblestones beneath them. ]
It's not polite to attack someone that's trying to help you, you know.
[ there's a joke here, trevor telling someone else to be polite, but now the crowd's rounded on him because he's stuck his nose into their business and isn't it typical, a belmont consorting with dark magic? he sighs, grip tightening. ]
I really don't want to have to hurt any of you.
no subject
Please- I'm seeking the relic stored in this town- I think it's a shield or- possibly a spear? The records weren't entirely clear.
[This isn't going well. Sabriel reaches for her sword, then draws her hand back- these are living people, not monsters or sorcerers sworn to some dark power. Even if they want to hurt her, she's not willing to do the same in return. But she's not going to let herself be killed on principle, not when there's still work to be done.
So she leans close to her rescuer and mutters.]
Close your eyes!
[Conjuring light is the first spell her father taught her- this is a modified version of it, calling up a light so bright it blinds, rather than illuminates as she grabs her new ally's arm, urging him to follow her. Hopefully they can find some isolated spot for her to explain- although given what the Belmonts did, perhaps he's seeking the same thing she is.]
no subject
I can't figure out what the hell it's supposed to be either.
[ the books on the subject are oddly vague; it's a necessary item to purge an old evil from this area but no one could decide what it actually was. he suspects a glamour of some kind. perhaps it looks different to each person that encounters it. but that just makes it harder to find.
when his new (he hopes) ally speaks again, he listens instinctively, slamming his eyes shut. he was fully ready to take off back down the alleyway, but he can see the burst of light through his eyelids and somehow can't bring himself to be surprised at the use of magic. still, once he deems it safe to look again he follows her lead. the alleyways are safer than the main roads, and at one point he drops a hand to her back to urge her to turn down one of them while their previous pursuers are still covering their eyes and recovering. it's quiet here, and there's a small cobbled side-way that they can huddle down. he stops, looking at her and frowning. ]
I didn't expect to find anyone else looking.
no subject
Neither was I- of course, I also wasn't expecting to encounter a Belmont.
[She almost asks about what happened- from what she understood, the line had died out after being excommunicated, but there are more pressing matters. Like hunting down that relic before something unpleasant finds it- or them, and she presses on, her tone becoming businesslike, even as her eyes keep darting to the shadows, like she's half-expecting something to lunge out of them.]
What we're looking for is- probably in the church- that's where people put sacred things, isn't it? If it's not there, then in one of the older buildings in town, or buried with its last owner. [Sabriel grimaces. Hopefully what they're after is on consecrated ground or otherwise warded. Otherwise... well, evil forces didn't just wait and let themselves be purged.]
Well, the records I found varied in their description of its shape, but they all agreed that it bore the sun and moon as emblems. Which isn't much, but it's something.
no subject
You lucked out, because I'm the only one left.
[ he's oddly upbeat about it, but he sounds tired when he says it. in response to what she continues with though he nods, crossing his arms over his chest with a hum. it's a complicated business, the whole thing, but for now there's safety in numbers even if he's still not used to it. they can at least watch each other's backs for the duration. ]
It was the same on my end. No one could agree on the description other than that small detail. It's better than nothing, and even if it's a common emblem I'd hope that context and location would give it away.
[ still, he wrinkles his nose. how annoying. ] I generally avoid churches, but I'm afraid you're right. It's the most likely place. Probably some idiot priest somewhere that sees it as a chalice not realizing what it is using it for his holy wine. [ he really doesn't have a high opinion of the church. ]
no subject
Well, we'd better get it out of his hands before something worse comes after it. Although now they'll probably add 'robbed a church' to everything else they say about Abhorsens.
[Although that's mild compared to some of the rather ridiculous rumors Sabriel's overheard- of course they were entirely human, and they'd never raise the dead. She turns- she can just see the cathedral spire over the rooftops, and starts walking towards it.
She can feel something in the far distance, if she concentrates. Something Dead, moving towards the town, and her pace quickens.]
Something's coming- it's not in the town yet, but we need to hurry!
no subject
I'm technically not even allowed inside. [ he huffs a tired noise at that, dragging his fingers through his hair. ] Adding 'robbed a church' to my sheet is the least of my worries right now.
[ people say what they will about belmonts, and it's only worse that everyone thinks they're all dead so they can say what they like. it makes altercations where his lineage comes out all the more awkward for it: the surprise that a belmont is alive paired with the fervor of wanting to be rid of the last heretic. it's a rough deal, but he thinks he manages well enough usually.
(he doesn't, but that's beside the point.)
when she speaks again it's more urgently and he frowns, keeping pace with her using long strides. he doesn't have a preternatural ability to sense monsters, but he knows some people do and as they near the church, he spares a glance toward her. ]
Can you tell how close it is?
no subject
Sabriel doesn't hesitate as she steps up to the door, but she turns back to Trevor before she opens it.]
Let's go. If we're lucky, no one but the town's priest will be inside at this hour. We'll be out of town before anyone's realized what's happened, and those Dead creatures will follow us.
no subject
Might as well get this over with. My favorite, having dead things following me.
[ there is only a priest inside, probably in the midst of doing some rites, and he notices the crest on his shirt first before anything else, which is just how it goes lately. he starts rambling about the excommunication, because everyone knows about it, and trevor just... sighs. ]
Look, we don't have time for that. We're trying to save the town.
[ he hasn't caught on fire yet, which he's definitely joked about before, and when the priest continues trevor gestures toward him, exasperated. ] You give it a try.
no subject
He'll sleep till dawn, assuming he isn't disturbed. Now, the relic bears the sign of the sun and moon...
[Sabriel picks up the communion chalice, turning it over in her hands before setting it down.]
Not this, but- look!
[Sabriel holds up the paten- a plate used to hold wafers being blessed during mass. There's a sun and moon design in the center of it.]
no subject
a beat passes. ] What does it look like to you? I don't think we're matching.
[ weird. he doesn't care as long as it works, but weird. ]
Why is everything around here strange? It doesn't quite feel right.
no subject
It looks like the plate they put the wafers in. But with magic, who can tell? I'll try to force it to show its true shape when we have time, but-
[Sabriel feels it- and hears it in the distant screams. They're out of time. She shoves the relic into her pack and pulls out her bell bandolier.]
They're at the gates!
no subject
[ blandly. so it is definitely enchanted with more than just what they need. ] As long as it works, I don't care.
[ the screams still him briefly but only a split-second as he processes what that means. then he's moving, waving for her to follow him as he heads out the door quickly. the gates are... that way, and he points his body toward them and takes off. maybe they can stave off the worst of it if they hurry, but the sounds coming from the entrance to the town aren't promising. there are several of the things for them to fight, split off into two groups, accosting and... well, devouring townspeople. ]
You take the right, I take the left.
Sorry for the delay
Bile rises in her throat when she sees what's happening, and feels the deaths, the lives ending in a gurgle of blood. But she lets Saraneth sound, the bell's deep voice booming out over the screams as she extends her will towards two of the creatures. She can feel them try to fight her, thrashing like fish caught on a fisherman's line, like puppets trying to fight against their strings ans Saraneth keeps sounding and Sabriel speaks, her voice echoing the bell's own power.]
Attack!
[It's a standard tactic- enslave some weaker Dead and use them to pin down a stronger one, destroying themselves in the process. They lunge at the strongest one, not hesitating even as it rips a limb off one of them. Sabriel keeps a grip on Saraneth's handle, and draws her sword with her free hand.]
you're all good!
gross.
well, no grosser than anything else he's dealt with. he cuts a path through the dead, taking out his sword when necessary and slicing through a couple more. one almost gets the better of him, briefly, a big bastard, but he slides on his knees between its legs as it lunges for him and slices it in twain. ] How are you doing over there?
[ banter is kind of a thing with him, really. sorry. people are fleeing around them, but it means they aren't getting eaten. ]
