The Road

Maybe you’ve always been traveling this road. Maybe you just started. But, either way, now you have a companion. They say it’s not about the destination, it’s the journey. Now you’re going to have to find out.

1. Post-apocalyptic. There’s not much left of the world out there. But there’s still this road, and at the end of it, they say, there’s a haven.
2. Epic fantasy. It’s a long and winding road, through forests and plains, and all manner of treacherous fairies and giant spiders along the way. Supposedly, at the end of it there’s a castle, a dragon, and a treasure.
3. Yellow brick road! A journey through a world weird and wonderful, and at the end, if you’re lucky, is a way back home.
4. Road trip! Route 66, cheap motels, diners, small-town America and the open highway.
5. The Eternal Commute. Welcome to hell. Or New Jersey. Either way, really. The two of you are stuck in this car, in traffic, and you’re getting nowhere. Eventually, one day, you’re going to get to your destination.
6. Wilderness road. Maybe you’re lost, or stranded, or this is all you’ve ever known. All you know is there’s only one road in all this wilderness, and if you’re ever going to get back to civilisation, you’re going to have to follow it.
7. Shangri-La. You’ve heard a rumour about this road. It goes somewhere. Somewhere special. El Dorado. Atlantis. Camelot. But if you ever want to get there, you’re going to have to follow the road. Don’t stray.

Ezra was starting to think that he must be going in circles. Why was he even sent on this wilderness trek? He hadn't found the rundown cottage Chris wanted him to check out and he had no idea how to get back to town. This sort of... nature excursion was more Vin Tanner's sort of thing; the realm of men who wore buckskin coats, not finely tailored haberdashery.

But if Ezra Standish's bright purple coat and red tie stood out in the forest, so did the strange blue box sat in the clearing he'd just come upon. He frowned faintly.

Was this the 'cottage' Chris had sent him to check out?

[It could be smoke or steam--no telling. Not out here, not after nightfall. This is some godawful stretch of desert. They might be in California, or, by now, it could be Arizona; it could be Nevada. But it's wide, and it's empty, and there's nobody else here. Most likely, there won't be, for miles and miles. And it's cold beyond reason, when the landscape boasts nothing but cactus and sparsest brush, but that's how things are in the desert in the night. So Matt is smoking, and Mello has a cigarette, too, and when he breathes--this next exhale--it could be smoke or steam.

He's not complaining about the cold, mind you, even as he shrugs fully into his coat. He's sitting on the roof of the car. They've been parked on the shoulder of the barren highway for about ten minutes, now.]

--It was good of you to come, [Mello says at length. To California, he means. To pluck Mello out of his bombastic plan. Mello isn't too prideful to thank Matt. That isn't what this is. What hurts his pride is the need to call in a favor like this in the first place.

This is only the first stretch of their drive. It's a long way to New York.]

I'm sure you would have preferred something quieter, after leaving the House. Typical of me to ring you, I suppose.

[This isn't humility on his part. He rarely cares to taste that. This is bitterness toward himself, and a stark awareness that Matt could have lived his life without all the things Mello will be asking of him.

Mello, by the way, is squinting up at the stars. They're a total array across the sky, diamantine with the air so clear. He can't see them so well, thanks to the bombing, but it's nothing like LA. Instead of properly thanking Matt, he blows some smoke up at the stars.]

Shanoa is the one sitting in the driver's seat. As a plant angles itself toward the sun her body is tilted toward her open window, her arm over the lip of the car and her head propped up on her hand. Dramatically sized sunglasses that are two perfect circles obscure most of her pretty features, leaving two orbs, a button nose, and lips set into a frown.

Just beyond the tips of her fingers, if she were to reach out, there are creatures at play in the thick brush. Fae and spirits of the forest perched upon a flower or a leaf or a mushroom, toads that never moved but seemed always to be watching. Beyond them there were sounds and shadows, of creatures far larger. The echoes of a turf war from somewhere. Wards kept them off their track, which seemed entirely in place with the magical forest around them in its solid yellow. Farther ahead along the way Shanoa can see what must be a rest stop. A break would be nice. A chance to stretch out her legs that have been cramped up below the wheel since-since when, actually? Shanoa perks up as it dawns on her she can't recall how long she's been in this car on this road in t his forest with this half-vampire with her. Neither can she remember how they got there in the first place, only that there's an end to this road and that she needs to get there.

Shanoa cants her head in Alucard's direction. "How are you faring?"

Road Trip!

[ The orders were simple: travel to the designated spot, take out the target, come back. Of course, the fact the designated spot was a few hundred kilometers away made things slightly more complicated.

Complicated wasn't bad though, as it meant both Prax and Gali had a lot of time to just be away from the constraining walls and the even more constraining gravitas of Madam. Always a good thing in Gali's books. Unfortunately for Prax though, Gali couldn't drive, as she could accidentally have a vision and stamp them against a wall, or a tree, or another car. Not very professional, to say the least.

What she could do (and basically all she cold do) was pick songs, sing slightly off tune (unless Raziel decided to chime in with some otherworldly angelical tunes) and stick half her body outside of the window to feel the wind messing with her hair.

Cue to halfway the way there. The road is desolate, and hot, and probably a desert. Gali is nose deep on a map, because they don't even have GPS signal at the moment. ]

I think... yeah, we're on the right track. If we see a motel about fifty kilometers from here, we're on the right track. If we don't... ummm...
