Wide-eyes stared at him in fear. She had no idea where her parents were or what had happened. She had been told to hide and so she had. She had concealed herself in a cupboard, holding her breath lest she make a sound. Now she stared at this stranger who she knew was somehow her kin. Though that did not comfort her, or make him seem any less dangerous.

"Why do you look like that?"

She had a thousand other questions. Where are my parents? What has happened? Why are you here? But somehow that question seemed the most pressing at the moment. He was a terrifying sight and she hoped that once she understood why he would be less frightening.

[Oh God, oh God, oh Jesus, oh God please, please don't let it be who he thinks it is. Oh my gooooooood, please, Lord, listen, Sean knows he's a fuck-up okay, he knows he's made bad life choices, but please don't let it be the Punisher that's come calling, please God!

He carefully peeks out from behind the wall he's huddling behind and hopes that maybe he's wrong. Maybe Sean just thought he saw a skull. Everybody's been talking about the Punisher and how he's back from the dead, and isn't that just the way of a ghost stories? You start hearing them and you jump at any damn noise. So when he looks around this corner, he's just going to see some other thug, just some guy from some other crime boss.

What he sees is a skull, drenched with blood.

Oh Jesus! Jesus! He was only supposed to be here to load and unload the containers, and maybe to stand around and look vaguely menacing with a shotgun in his hands. It was just a little extra money this month so he could pay his rent without eating ramen for two weeks straight! Now he's going to get his head blown right open by the goddamn Punisher and his ma's never going to know what happened to him. Sean trembles in fear, praying to God to please send him a miracle.

As he prays, he realizes that it's pretty quiet. He can't hear the Punisher moving around any. Sean screws up his face and peeks again, hoping he doesn't take a bullet to the face.

The Punisher hasn't moved any. Maybe he's hurt... Maybe someone else got him. Sean could finish him off- oh who's he kidding, there's no way he's going to be the one who does that. If Sean rushes him, he'll probably trip and fall and blow his own head off with his own damn gun. And he'd probably deserve it too. The Punisher's not a good guy, but he's not a bad guy either. Sean knows the guys he's killing, alright, and a lot of them are nasty folks. Most of them aren't just making ends meet...

Jesus. He just wants to get out of here alive. And he's desperate enough to try anything...]

The streets were not the safest place for mutants. Everyone knew that. But Clarice had gotten pretty good at keeping herself safe since she ran away, fled, like a coward left Xavier’s, a feat that mostly consisted of being too skinny and poor for any of the usual gangs to take notice of her. She didn’t have anything anyone wanted anyways.
She normally tries to avoid fights, finding folks all too willing to turn against the monster, demon mutant who would try to interfere.
This time, there had been gunshots, and she can still see the one man slumped against the wall, where he fell. The others haven’t shown any sign of coming back. He hasn’t moved much, just enough signs he’s still alive. Maybe- maybe this time, she should help.
Clarice comes creeping up the alley.
“H-Hey. Are you- Are you okay?”

[It's almost a little funny that even now, in the wake of the curse's passing, that hatred in the hearts of man is still there, swelling, thick and black, in their chests. He can see it in their eyes behind the look of animal-fear, of disgust. Tastes that same bitterness in the back of his own throat.

So much Hector's fine work.

He's not welcome in this town any more than he is any other; he doesn't need the humans to tell him that. But they do anyway, coming at him with pitchforks and billhooks and stakes for the sake of their children, their women, their livestock. And again with the holy water - and how cute it is that they still think it'll do anything other than wet his skin.

He might not have wanted this life, this second chance God's laughingly thrust on him. But he's not ready to die either. Not like this, at the hands of these creatures who had once held the power to terrify him a very long time ago.

So he has to kill them.

He was made for this, for running his spear through guts, lungs, skulls, for crunching his heel into eyes and screaming throats. This isn't like Hector or the Belmont. They're just peasants and ordinary hunters, would-be heroes with too much bravado and too little skill hoping to hang his head on the mantle like a trophy. Easy pickings he thinks he'd feel a little sorry for, if he could. But his only regret is how quickly they fall, some in pieces, some still choking prayers to a God who would never hear them.

"Devil take you..." a man gasps out around a mouthful of bright, frothy blood.

He pauses to look down at him with his pale eyes. A strigoi's eyes, he's been told. And maybe the humans were right, he thinks. Maybe he was a monster from the start. 'He already has,' he wants to say. But he jams and twists his heel into the man's crotch instead, lets him wail and stay with that agony a while before driving the red, dripping blades of his Chauve-Souris through his ribs.

He looks up to find a woman staring, horrified, from the window of her home, clutching a child to her breasts. He offers a thin-lipped smile and steps over the corpses, walking past.

Hector... he muses, turning his gaze up to the sky. It's all black, strangely starless. Can you feel me now?]
