[ i'm sixty years late to this one but i know i've seen canonmates in the far reaches of the past, happy for any of you. also happy with cross-canon. mostly looking for endearing/more comedic interpretations of this meme, because it's a meme and we can do what we want. bantering is a+++. is bond the usually-dangerous one? yes. is the other character also usually dangerous and/or stoic? maybe? you tell me.

Alfonso Segreti is not a man that features guests like Benedict Dearborn often -- but he did his family a service, once, a good one. His family is old Roman Catholic, classically and to the point of superstitious. It had been an absolute heartbreak and an incredible slight when the church had not agreed to help his niece, in a way beyond what medical and psychological doctors could, and he knew exactly why it was that they had nervously declined with paper-thin excuses.

Ben hadn't been thrilled to help them, a family of crime that he had rather taken to completely shielding his eyes to. Thankfully, no one can suggest that Ben had helped Alfonso under duress! Except for...the part where having been tracked down through networks of people that he didn't even know existed to have what was effectively the mafia show up in his apartment and corner Ben into presenting their situation and 'ask' for his help...well. To his uncle, Ben would admit that he certianly didn't feel that he had a choice, and not credit to his morals, or -- for lack of a less concerning phrase in this context, his bleeding heart.

That was seasons ago now, though. Alfonso had seemed perplexed that Ben insisted against taking his money (with the fear, paranoia, and guilt that came with wondering how many men were cinder-bricked to the bottom of rivers to get such money.) In fact, he had, for the briefest moment, nearly took offense -- but thank God for giving Alfonso Segreti just an extra dash of intelligence over his hot-headedness. 'You're like some modern-day saint, aren't you?

'Well, the Segretis never leave a favor unpaid, and you're doing the Lord's work, good work. You do good by us, we do good by you. One of these days, I'll be returning the favor.'

'Oh, no rush...'


Well, seems Alfonso didn't rush to it after all, but he does call upon Mister Dearborn the moment he's back in London on 'business.' Goody. Luckily with far less drama such as breaking into his home, but Ben knows better than to leave him stood-up with an offer for...something. He knows he can't be walking into a trap -- unfortunately, Ben really hopes he isn't about to walk into a secret brothel, or to be handed over priceless artifacts that come with an entire swarm of henchmen coming to reclaim it for illicit intentions.

At Segreti's beautiful mansion, decidedly lacking in sex workers of either the voluntary or involuntary sort, Ben is greeted by Alfonso warmly. He's put on a little weight in the middle, he's trying out facial hair, all inane details Ben has pointed out to him as he's brought in through the foyer. In Alfonso's office Ben politely refuses whatever stiff drink that the man is having for himself, but he can't quite manage to make it not uncomfortable when he offers him coffee, with a look that tells Ben that no one turns Alfonso Segreti down twice. All right...coffee is, at least, lacking in alcohol proof.

Before the coffee even arrives by Alfonso's assistant, Marco, who seemed perturbed that he has to be the one to get the coffee -- by outright mumbling it on his departure -- the master of the home provides Ben with a very old box. It's easily a foot and a half long, and narrow, and Alfonso insists that Ben open it himself. He thinks he could pass out embarrassingly before this man, between his nerves, and how long he holds his breath for as he goes for it. Inside is the head piece of a very old, broken lance. It's crudely designed, lithe and tipped in an incredibly old metal tip, somewhat bladed. Ben...really isn't sure that he's prepared to have this conversation with Alfonso Segreti, of all people.

But Ben finds he has plenty more patience now than he walked in with -- even Alfonso agrees that it would have to be examined, tested, the whole nine yards, but Alfonso seems to think Ben is more religiously aligned than he really is. He seems to hinge on Ben's instant reaction to the relic. 'It...I mean. It certainly could be the Holy Lance.'

Ben can't take this. He isn't sure if it is or isn't but on the off chance that it is, can he accept this? How did Alfonso get this? No -- Ben doesn't want to ask that, because he doesn't want the answer. Christ. Well...'this is a more than genuous offer' is an understatement when Ben nervously gives it, but once more in the presence of Segreti, he feels as though...he really doesn't have a choice.

Once he has excused himself into the small bathroom just off of Alfonso's office, down toward the foyer, Ben pauses over the sink's bowl and braces himself. He can take it to Tobias, who can run it to a bishop, because at best, this thing belongs to the church, not some man who lives in Lambeth alone with his cat, and the pestering rogue fey of the week, living in his cabinets. As much as this...thing...is a 'weapon against malevolence,' as Alfonso had so excitedly worded it, it doesn't belong with him.

But...it doesn't belong with Segreti either. So Ben, staring into the mirror with conviction, decides he will leave with it.

And that's about the time that Ben hears a curious clatter out in the hallway. He's on his way out of the powder room when he finds a tray toppled to the beautifully polished stone-tile floor, coffee cup tragically spilled. If there are any sounds happening, Ben doesn't hear them over his increasing nervous pulse, and a building high-pitched ringing in his ears as he ascends slowly up the hallway, back in the direction of Alfonso's office, where the doors lay wide open...

[ Long ago, Mairon found that the lesser beings of Eru's creation put great faith in the presence of a physical form. The Dark Lord Sauron's body had been defeated (a fact still bitter to his tongue after all of these centuries upon centuries of waiting in the dark). The Dark Lord Sauron could be no threat at all without a body they would tell themselves, and they forgot him in their ignorance.

How terribly foolish.

Though severely and utterly limited by many things at present, his ability to be perceived however he may like within the minds of those who had so willingly let him in remains his strongest asset. This is not the first time he has visited Bilbo Baggins in his dreams. He comes to him in times of stress and ache, comes to the keeper of the strongest remaining piece of his spirit to keep him safe. Well, to make him feel safe. What better bond is there truly than one of safety and trust?

Mairon comes to Bilbo more golden than he was at the end of the last age. A dreamlike figure of gentle warmth who cradles the hobbit's head in his lap, running an almost elven finger through his curls. He comes to Bilbo resembling more a follower of Yavanna, shining with the harvest sun. His hair curls around his neck, a vibrant autumn orange that comes together with the golden hue of his skin, with red, gold, orange flowers are braided in. Draped in green and browns he keeps Bilbo company in his dreams. Hobbits are such peculiar creatures, and Yavanna did make them so truly in her image that he finds the task to be almost too easy.

In Bilbo's mind, Mairon the Admirable hums and weaves his music into Bilbo's mind in the guise of comfort and peace. ]
